The purpose of this course is to subvert the impulse to make art. This class
is not about history or contemporary art. It is not about art. It is about thinking.
Our first memory of the idea of art is that art is something that we could do or like to do. We went to shows, museums, studios, classes and so forth. Now it is time to
stop all that -- and this class attempts to do that.
In any case, whether it's sculpturing or printmaking, music or what have you, we turn the thinking process inward and redirect the energy to another location. Meditation
will play a large part in this selection whether geographical or mental.
The reason for this goes this way: The chief action in art is to set the mind in a peaceful
state so instead of many colors or many ideas we slowly settle the mind -- not stir it up. Once the mind becomes clear, we know where we are going. There is a natural vibration between all things. Our bodies are magnetic.
When we tune up an instrument with these vibes in mind, the instrument plays well.
This opens up in this class the opportunity to respond to all questions of art at the
speed of light.
From a feeling position we hope to introduce a group of students sensitive to
these motions of objects in time and space.
People that can be injected into a given situation -- land or sea or sky -- can produce
creative projects into the magnetic field of earth using computers, infrared, and
telecommunications in general. And the molecules of water in the desert. This is
possible and can defuse many political, religious and economic situations.
I think it was Bob Rauschenberg who said something to the effect: "Art can replace
the world economy." Art could replace the current currency. World vision could be
changed.
The art of creative thinking moves the artist of tomorrow into today's future.
The environment for creative thinking could be the springboard for expeditions
as never before imagined. An example of such thought is the Bluebird Houses by Artists.
This is not to say that this class will not do artworks. There can be birdhouses by artists, for example.
The class will incorporate skills from the following disciplines: architecture, painting, drawing, printmaking (by machine), sculpture, poetry, video, fashion, performance, installation, conceptual art, creative funerals and curating.
There is no objective point of direction here; there are no little places where we drop our emotions. There is, however, location.
There is observation. And there is action, the first of these actions being creative thinking.
