Yet the outcome is still contested, in  a thousand small ways. The rebel anthem plays on car-horns and doorbells, the defeated banner still flies over conquered capitols, its scholars write slanted histories for the victors. Lost orders, lost causes, lost opportunities - the details of defeat still  nag the minds of millions. "If only," they say, "if it weren't for this." |

                        | Blacks in California History How California got its name.
In 1535, The Spaniard Hernan de Cortes sailed west  from the coast of New Spain (Mexico) in search of a  mythical island inhabited by strong, black women,  and rich with gold. The island, called "California" in an account by Garcia Ordonez Montalvo in 1510, was ruled by the queen "Califia."
Along with a company of 700 conquistadors, three hundred of whom were of African descent, Cortes landed at the southern tip of what we now know as  the Baja peninsula.
Spanish maps began calling this land "California" and depicted it as an island for more than 150 years. |

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- China reached a milestone in human history Tuesday  with the launch of its first piloted spaceflight into Earth orbit. Blasting off from a remote space base in the Gobi Desert atop a Long March 2F rocket, a single Chinese astronaut named Yang Liwei is circling the planet every 90  minutes aboard the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft, according to the official Xinhua News  Agency. As a result, China has become only the third nation on Earth capable of independently launching its citizens into orbit. The former Soviet Union was first in 1961, followed by the United States in 1962. "I feel good," Yang said
First Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei waves when boarding China's first manned spacecraft Shenzhou 5 before its blasting off at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center  in northwest China's Gansu Province Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003. China launched its first manned space mission on Wednesday, sending an astronaut hurtling  toward orbit and becoming the third country in Earth's history to do so, four decades after the Soviet Union and the United Sates. 30

                        | "And with NASA's shuttle fleet grounded because of the Feb. 1 Columbia tragedy, China's new capability appears at an  interesting time. Moreover, the U.S. military is likely to keep a close eye on future developments.  In fact, according to a Pentagon report released in July, China's space program will result in making them a greater military threat.
"While one of the strongest immediate motivations for this program appears to be political prestige, China's efforts almost certainly will contribute  to improved military space systems in the 2010-2020 timeframe," the report to Congress said.
The report quoted a Chinese naval captain, Shen Zhongchang, as writing: "The mastery of outer space will be a requisite  for military victory, with outer space becoming the new commanding heights for combat."
Another view, expressed before the launch, comes from The [Sour Grapes]Times of India, which in an editorial Monday called the Shenzhou 5 launch a "joke." "It would be better to call it China's Late Creep Forward, given that Beijing is attempting to showcase a four-decade-old technology. If this is China's idea of arriving, then it's come at a time when the other two  spacefaring nations have left it light years behind," the publication said. [ It should be remember that India nearly depleeted its soil growing Opium for the Colonialist British In the name of God & country... so thus , Sour Grapes]
The mission began at 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday (0100 GMT Wednesday), which was early morning at the Jiuquan Space Launch Center in Inner Mongolia. A last minute decision to not broadcast the launch on live television prevented millions from seeing the 19-story-tall rocket climb toward space.
Chinese president Hu Jintao was at the launch site to witness the shot in person and called it "the glory of our great motherland." "The party and the people will never forget those who have set up the outstanding merit in the space industry for the  motherland, the people and the nation," Hu said.
NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe added his congratulations in a statement released late Tuesday. "This launch is an important achievement in the history of human exploration.  The Chinese people have a long and distinguished  history of exploration. NASA wishes China a continued safe human space flight program," O'Keefe said.

Chinese Space Launch: Jiang's Absence a Sign of Hu's Upper Hand?
Oct 15, 2003  Stratfor.bz
. . .  Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin was unexpectedly absent from the country's Oct. 15 manned space launch.
Jiang's absence could be a sign that the former president . . . is losing political clout and quietly is being pushed into full
 retirement.

Rebuttal
--------
I believe this report is mistaken. Chinese papers have Jiang talking to Yang just before takeoff, and Hu, in his remarks,
specifically thanks Jiang Zemin by name for his decision in '92 to move forward with the piloted  (manned, not PC) program.
On the split, I think the leadership has really come together over the past few months, rather than moving apart.
A fairly clear division of labor is emerging among the nine politburo members, and people seem content to look forward
rather than to past misconduct.
I think now that this launch is over, Jiang may feel he has finally secured a place in Chinese history worthy of his vanities,
and this may encourage him to allow the new group to emerge in their own right.

Russell (Skull &Bones; co-founder-1833) cousin Samuel Russell formally established Russell & Co. on  January 1, 1824 for the purpose of acquiring opium and smuggling it to China. Russell & Co. merged with the number  one US trader, the J. & T.H. Perkins "Boston Concern" in 1829. By the mid-1830s the opium trade had become "the  largest commerce of its time in any single commodity, anywhere in the world." Russell & Co.and the Scotch firm Jardine-Matheson, then the world's largest opium dealer working together were known as the "Combination.
" George HW Bush(S&B 1948) was born in Milton, Massachusetts not far from the historic home of Robert Bennett Forbes,a Russell partner. Many great American, European and Chinese family fortunes were built on the"China" (opium) trade. Yes, they sold porcelain, tea, silks and other items at home in the US, but they "needed" the trade in  opium for silver to pay for the desired goods and—opium smuggling returned"handsome" profits.Samuel Russell of Middleton, Connecticut ... | From Carl A Trocki’s excellent book, Opium, Empire and the Global Economy(1999): . (5 of 20) [12/10/2003 5:45:57 PM]
"The trade in such drugs usually results in some form of monopoly which not only centralizes the drug traffic, but also restructures much of the affiliated social and economic terrain in the process. In particular two major effects are the creation of mass markets and the generation of enormous, in fact unprecedented, cash flows. The existence of monopoly results in the concentrated accumulation of vast pools of wealth.
The accumulations of wealth created by a succession of historic drug trades have been among the primary foundations of global capitalism and the modern nation-state itself. Indeed, it may be argued that the entire rise of the west, from 1500  to 1900, depended on a series of  drug trades." <> ". . . the image of the "opium empire," a metaphor first offered by Joseph Conrad.  It takes up the early history of opium and other "traditional drugs" such as tobacco and sugar and develops the paradigm of commercialized drug trades and ties that  to the growth of European colonialism in the Americas and Asia . . ." <> ". . . links between drug trades, European colonial expansion, the creation of the global capitalist system and the creation of the modern state.
Drug trades destabilized existing societies not merely because they destroyed  individual human beings but also, and perhaps more importantly, because they have the power to undercut the existing political economy of any state.
They have created new forms of capital; and they have redistributed wealth in radically new ways." <> "Opium thus created a succession of new political and economic orders in Asia during the past two centuries. These included the state of the East India Company itself, the new Malay polities of island Southeast Asia, the  colonial states of nineteenth-century Southeast Asia and the warlord regimes  of post-Qing China as well as the Guomindang and communist states that arose out of that milieu. At the same time, the economies of the entire region were radically reoriented, or perhaps "re-occidented" would be a more appropriate word. India's opium production was brought under western control  while China's domestic economy was opened to the west. Southeast Asia was  first opened to western traders and then towestern control.
With the migration of Chinese labor, Southeast Asian economies were transformed into commodity-producing regimes focused on exporting to the industrializing western Powers.
Underlying all of this, opium rearranged the domestic economies and pushed them down the path of mass consumption, which together with mass production, typified the "modern" economic order.
It is possible to suggest a hypothesis that mass consumption, as  it exists in modern society, began with drug addiction. And, beyond that, addiction began with a drug-as-commodity. Something was  necessary to prime the pump, as it were, to initiate the cycles of  production, consumption and accumulation that we identify with  capitalism.
Opium was the catalyst of the consumer market, the money economy and even  of capitalist production itself in nineteenth-century Asia. <> Opium was the tool of the capitalist classes in transforming the peasantry and in monetizing their subsistence lifestyles. Opium created pools of capital and fed  the institutions that accumulated it: the banking and financial systems, the  insurance systems and the transportation and information infrastructures. Those structures and that economy have, in large part, been inherited by the successor  nations of the region today."
 One might say, whomever controls opium—controls . . .
And it is especially profitable when its illegal, plus the corrupting side-effects that can be "played" towards . . . (5 of 20) [12/10/2003 5:45:57 PM] |

                        | The Opium Poppy O just, subtle, and all-conquering opium! --Thomas De Quincey Confessions of an English Opium-Eater
Who first discovered the opium poppy’s attributes is lost in the depths of time. Research suggests that "there are no truly wild" opium poppies and all extant species are cultivars. Opium poppy’s "genetic alterations"—along with a just few other drug and food plants—"imply that the plant is the product of an extensive and sophisticated process of primitive genetic engineering." The basic litany of opium’s  history is that cultivated opium seeds and pods have been found at Neolithic sites in central Europe from the fourth millennia B.C. and the plant spread to the south and southeast. Over 5000 years ago, Sumerians were growing opium poppies— the "joy plant"— for both its medicinal and "narcotic" properties.
The Assyrians—who called it "lion fat"—assimilated opium use from the  Sumerians. The Assyrians passed its use on to the Babylonians, who engendered opium use among the Egyptians. Here use flowered with a unique "thebiacum" strain being developed. A strain with a high amount of thebaine—one of opium's 24 alkaloids—very medicinal but not as soporific. Many classical Egyptian royal tombs were "decorated with paintings of opium poppies" among other medicinal plants. Ancient Egyptian texts included an opiate preparation "Remedy to Prevent the Excessive Crying of Children"—a use carried through many cultures up through  the patent medicines sold in America, Britain and elsewhere until the early 1900s. The Egyptians engaged in a strong trade with their strong medicinal variant throughout the Mediterranean.
From two Mediterranean isles, comes the only archeological evidence of the  smoking of opium before the sixteenth century A.D. The "Peoples of the Sea" on Cyprus were smoking opium in ceramic pipes and were using slashing culling knives on opium pods before 1100 BC. From "primordial opium dens" and other sites on Crete, archaeologists have uncovered sophisticated smoking devices, very similar to ones devised by the Chinese 3,000 years later and—a most  amazing statue.
"The Poppy Goddess, Patroness of Healing" is about three feet high with three poppies in the front of her tiara. Some "archeologists speculate that this female deity, crowned with poppy pods, presided over an opium-smoking cult on Crete over 3,5000 years ago."
The Greeks looked to opium as both a medicine and a magical talisman within  their mythos—a "sacred plant to which were consecrated altars and priests." Then circa 600 B.C. the Greek culture began transforming from one of magic and myth to one encouraging reason and the study of knowledge. One of the big  changes was from choosing of a pharmakos—a sacrificial human scapegoat, to be stoned to death—towards a cult of doctor-priests gathered around the legend of Aesuclapius. They were known to give their patients an admittance exam consisting of an opiated potion accompanied by sleep on a freshly-skinned rams skin. After the patients slept they were queried about their dreams for a prognosis  and diagnosis. Hipocrates was born near the Aesuclapisian main hospital on the isle of Cos in 460 B.C. Hipocrates stripped away the magic to become the father of medicine. He showed opium to be "useful as a cathartic, hypnotic, narcotic and styptic" and bespoke of monitored moderate usage. The Aesuclapisians were the  medical establishment all through the Roman era. The isle of Cos was a favorite rehabilitation clinic for Nero, who had been enthroned with help of another use of opium—a poison. His mother Agrippina put opium "in the wine of her fourteen year- old stepson, Britannicus." The dissolution of the Roman European empire into the Dark ages left it to the Crusaders to bring back to Europe familiarity of the drug and  its uses from the Arabs.
"Healing" in medieval European took many forms, not all being medicinal. The all- powerful church declared that disease was demonic and exorcisms were prescribed. The Arab physicians, the midwives/herbalists and a classical-based school started by Muslim physicians at Salermo on Sicily were the ones that understood and used opium. The "kill-cure Frankish system"—one of leeches, bleeding, blistering, trepanning—"known in its time as Heroic medicine," (ironically some say the root of the word heroin) didn’t generally prescribe opium, decrying  it as "lazy."
In the first part of the 1500s Theophrastus Bombastus von Hoheheim, otherwise know as Paraclesus created the famous opiated potion, laudanum. Laudanum has come to be a generic term for a variety of oral opiate preparations. When laudanum is made to Paraclesus’s original recipe using orange and lemon juice,  one gets a primitive form of heroin. Laudanum-named preparations were a staple medicine used by medical doctors up through the early decades of the twentieth century. Although a tussle between herbalists and medical practitioners continued, the medical establishment embraced laudanum and other opiate preparations for  pain relief and their effect of masking the symptoms of disease.

The 9/11 You Were Never Told About - Part 2 Pakistani General confirms publicly that "War on Terror" is all about Heroin!!
Joe Vialls, January 2002 Three days after “The 9/11 You Were Never Told About” was first published on the Internet, Pakistani Major General Zafar Abas has gone on the public record, confirming my claim that the American military has not in the past, and is not now, bombing Afghan drug assets, including heroin laboratories and drug dumps.
Speaking on Australian SBS Television on 14 January, Major  General Abas said, “ It is common knowledge that southern Afghanistan, which is infested with narcotics dumps and factories,  has not been bombed by the Americans at all.”
Major General Abas, commander of the southern Baluchistan  Province of Pakistan, agreed to the interviewed after his troops  intercepted and seized a large shipment of pure heroin on its  way to Europe.
The single half ton shipment, the first intercepted since the “downfall” of the Taliban, is estimated to have a street value of US$1 billion. The shipment was dispatched from Afghanistan  by tribal warlords who controlled the country until 1996, and who were recently reinstated by the CIA on behalf of the American Administration and the American people.
The public statement by Major General Abas on 14 January 2001 is very rare from the Pakistani military, which normally bites its lip and says nothing. What the statement itself indicates is growing frustration bordering on desperation.
Dealing with drug dealers and American CIA spooks on a daily  basis, must make the Pakistani military wonder how anyone in  the west could really believe that “The War on Terror” has anything to do with Osama Bin Laden or the attack on the World Trade center. Smack, anyone? |

                        | Five hundred years ago the "corporation" was invented as a legal form to allow investors to engage in public works -- such as bridge or road building. Over the years, corporations gained the right to engage in any kind of business, but they were still nothing more than convenient "legal fictions" until 1886 when the U.S. Supreme Court declared that corporations are "persons" and gave them the same rights as living human beings -- and more. This makes it possible for corporations to make campaign contributions, for example, by claiming their right of free speech. If corporate personhood were abolished, it would be much easier for the people to control the harmful actions of corporations.

Russian, Korean, Chinese, North Korean, Iranian, and other peoples are truly suffering.  Civil society is stressed or broken in those countries, among many others.   Each one of those governments would be happy to destroy the United States and is taking steps greater or smaller that direction.
During the decades of the Cold War, one maniac in either capital could have blown out most protoplasm.  Those dangers were largely centralized.  Now, no one person controls the spectrum of global dangers, which are burgeoning in manufacturing complexes, large laboratories, private garages, caves, kitchens, and who-knows-where.
I don't yet see a historical model of how to deal successfully with this condition.  How do you think we should look at the state of the world?

It's a  Bullet its a Bomb its a BOMB its a Bullet !
*Ethnic Bomb’ Now Linked to Korean Intrigue
 By Gordon Thomas
A top North Korean scientist, working on a race-based bomb, has vanished.
Was he taken by Western intelligence operatives or did the Chinese nab him?
Has Dr. Ri Chae Woo, North Korea’s world-ranking expert working on a “whites-only”
racial/genetic bomb, been snatched in a combined CIA, MI6 and Australian secret service
operation? Or has Ri been grabbed by the Chinese Secret Intelligence Service—
so that the communist government can discover just how far Kim Jong II, North Korea’s
unpredictable dictator, has advanced his threat to launch the ethnic bomb upon the world?
Starting with small pox for native American the USA used cheep ways to kill.
Kim could precipitate a crisis, which would bring China into direct
confrontation with the United States—something it is not yet ready
 to do.

                        | The “bomb,” which is more accurately characterized as a biologicalweapon, is designed to attack specific human genetic structures.
Its dispersal methods vary, but most analysts expect it would be put in a warhead and launched on a missile. Mossad, the CIA and MI6 have all  independently confirmed Ri and his team of microbiologists were developing an “ethnic bomb” designed to attack white races.
 |

                        | Using its own missiles, North Korea can already  hit West Coast cities like Seattle and Los Angeles.
The news has already sent a shock wave through the closed world of microbiology used for covert purposes.  There are various genetic components for racial types: hair color and texture, skin and eye color all the way down to nose shapes.
Ri and his researchers were working on a genetic bomb that would be deadly accurate in its targeting. To achieve this, they needed to create a genetic profile of people who uniquely share common inherited variations of their dopamine-regulating genes regardless of their ostensible race, geography or ethnicity.

                        | SPEAKING OF BALLOONS  .Not Rated: Also from Lee: A constantly-surprising, endlessly dynamic, profoundly committed  human-rights worker named Dr Norbert Vollertsen (a German physician; check on Internet) has elected to devote as much of the rest of his life as is needed to liberating the people of North Korea.
(DPRK is the sit of a contemporary holocaust comparable to Nazi Germany's:  torture, brutality, evil physical experimentation, mass starvation, mass killings.)  The last few years have been quite an adventure for him; I don't say this lightly, as he's being pursued by a variety of unfriendly governmental agencies, some of them not the ones you'd expect.
Nonetheless, he plans projects, rescues refugees, does emergency medical work, negotiates with organizations, occasionally has actually to disappear for a while, and puts the fear of God in big chunks of officialdom.
When Kim Jong-il flees to Khabarovsk or wherever, Norbert will immediately  be nominated for a Nobel prize for his unique and valuable accomplishments. (You're welcome to join that committee. Let me know.)
Meanwhile, the latest endeavor is laid out herewith.  If you can send a check or some useful advice, or even merely copy/resend this to someone who can  do something, please do.

 1.  Now with some fresh donation of precious  seed money from Christian and  further mobilize final participants in the upcoming  balloon-sending event. I propose to send thousands  of balloons to the North from a place near DMZ in a  public event open to selected media due to security  and logistical concerns.
Each balloon will be about  3 feet in diameter, filled with helium on site, and  capable of carrying up to 300 grams of load. When we have punched one small  needle-hole on it, the  balloon will lose helium gas on  its way North and land on unspecified spot. There will  be a waterproof pouch weighing about 200 grams attached to the balloon comprising one tiny radio with  batteries   (max. 150 grams, $3), two 500-won notes or one 1,000- won note in North Korean currency (enough to buy a few kilos of rice , $1), and one sheet of whatever flyer  provided by the donor (a tract that I have prepared in the event of default by the donor). Without Border (GS) , both based in Europe, have  shown interest in  participating.CSW-USA, Visual  Artists' Guild (of LA), and about a dozen individuals have sent me donations. I need more donors,  either in cash or in kind -- i.e.tiny radios weighing less than 150  grams including batteries, bulk helium gas in containers, 3-feet  diameter balloons, buses to transport the volunteers from Seoul,  etc.  I also need volunteers -- about 100 -- to fill the balloons with  helium gas on site. Hopefully, volunteers can be mobilized by a Please reply to me as soon as possible if you can lend a hand.

 | THE MYSTIQUE OF ENLIGHTENMENT Part One U.G. (Compiled from conversations in India and Switzerland, 1973 to 1976) People call me an 'enlightened man' -- I detest that term -- they can't find any other word to describe the way I am functioning. At the same time, I point out that there is no such thing as enlightenment at all. I say that because all my life I've searched and wanted to be an enlightened man, and I discovered that there is no such thing as enlightenment at all, and so the question whether a particular person is enlightened or not doesn't arise. I don't give a hoot for a sixth-century-BC Buddha, let alone all the other claimants we have in our midst. They are a bunch of exploiters, thriving on the gullibility of the people. There is no power outside of man. Man has created God out of fear. So the problem is fear and not God. ______________ I discovered for myself and by myself that there is no self to realize -- that's the realization I am talking about. It comes as a shattering blow. It hits you like a thunderbolt. You have invested everything in one basket, self-realization, and, in the end, suddenly you discover that there is no self to discover, no self to realize -- and you say to yourself "What the hell have I been doing all my life?!" That blasts you. _______________ All kinds of things happened to me -- I went through that, you see. The physical pain was unbearable -- that is why I say you really don't want this. I wish I could give you a glimpse of it, a touch of it -- then you wouldn't want to touch this at all. What you are pursuing doesn't exist; it is a myth. You wouldn't want anything to do with this. UG: You see, I maintain that -- I don't know, whatever you call this; I don't like to use the words 'enlightenment,' 'freedom,' 'moksha' or 'liberation'; all these words are loaded words, they have a connotation of their own -- this cannot be brought about through any effort of yours; it just happens. And why it happens to one individual and not another, I don't know.
MYSTIQUE OF ENLIGHTENMENT: Pt.1:U.G. (U.G.Krishnamurti) shaken or overtaken by curiosity after a few minutes talking with him. He doesn't offer hope, love, peace or spiritual salvation. On the contrary, his words are rather deflating. He discourages people from coming to see him and most often politely turns them away. Yet he is the most talked about thinker in India, and his biography, recently published by Penguin in India, has topped the best seller list for the last nine months. U.G. endlessly repeats: "I have no message for mankind." Yet, ironically, thousands of people the world-over feel otherwise and flock to U.G.'s unique brand of discourse. But that isn't easy because U.G. organizes no gatherings, gives no lectures, offers no courses, pushes no method, peddles no mantras, has no organization, no office, no secretary, no telephone number, no fax and no fixed address.  Like his growing legend, U.G. is everywhere and nowhere. He stays withfriends or in small rented apartments and tries to stay one step ahead of the crowds who try to discover his whereabouts as soon as the word spreads that "U.G.'s in town" -- be it in San Francisco, New York, London, Bombay, Bangalore, Sydney, Auckland, or Beijing.
U.G. has no worldly belongings other than what he can fit into a small 10 lb. suitcase. He dresses simply and looks quite ordinary.
He never stays in one place for more than two months. He is like the  Howard Hughes of the guru set: enigmatic, brilliant, charismatic, reclusive and publicity-shy.
Never has a `philosopher' become so famous while emphatically denying that he even has a philosophy.
Yet, what makes a man who so avidly shuns publicity so talked about? How does one who never gives a public lecture get such a following? How does a "guru" with no organization get such media attention? U.G. is India's most controversial teacher and categorizing him is extremely difficult. He has been called "the anti-guru", "the un-guru", the "seer with no solutions", "the raging sage", "the thinker who shuns thought" and "the anti-Krishnamurti", referring to his namesake, J. Krishnamurti, U.G.'s better known contemporary with whom he shares no family tie.
If any comparison makes sense, U.G. could be likened to a modern day cross  between Socrates and Diogenes. However, he differs from the former because he undercuts the cornerstone of the Socratic method: discourse. U.G. isn't out to convince, convert, win over or influence anyone; and he differs from the latter because nothing in his manner or bearing is provocative or outlandish. However, he is similar to Socrates in that he has a disarming and implacable logic, and akin to Diogenes because he shows no deference to money, power, position, or prestige.  In a very real sense, U.G. is a unique witness to that elusive wisdom that has been the hallmark of every great mystic who has ever lived.
And like a mirror, he is a fascinating witness to our era as well. --Anthony Nahas

Ken Lay Takes the 5th - Is He Protecting Bush or Schwarzenegger? 27-Oct-03 Enron "Former Enron Corp. Chairman Kenneth Lay is asserting his constitutional right against self-incrimination in a court fight against a Securities and Exchange Commission request for documents it wants for its probe of the bankrupt energy trader. Lay's lawyers said in an Oct. 21 federal court filing that they were concerned the items sought were 'personal rather than corporate' and the SEC would not guarantee Lay immunity from prosecution over the documents. Lay has been ordered to appear at a Nov. 7 hearing before U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth to answer the SEC's complaint that he is withholding documents. Lawyers for Lay said their client has already produced more than 23,000 pages of documents for the SEC's probe, but was withholding 870 pages, asserting his Fifth Amendment right. The SEC said last month it was looking at whether Lay knew of, or was involved in, fraudulent activity at Enron." Hey Kenny Boy - are you protecting Bush or Schwarzenegger?

AP: "California governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger must explain the substance of his private May 2001 meeting with Enron chief Ken Lay, the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights wrote in a letter to Schwarzenegger Tuesday. FTCR, which was the state's most vocal critic of Governor Gray Davis' handling of the energy crisis, said that if the governor-elect did not recount the meeting by the time of his inauguration, the group would ask state lawmakers to open an investigation to uncover the substance of the meeting, including any information that might further the state's efforts to return billions of dollars that taxpayers and consumers overpaid for electricity during the energy crisis."

Achilesc Heal !!!  Cheney's Push to Piratize Military Operations Has Cost the Taxpayers AND the Troops 28-Aug-03  Halliburton
The Daily Enron: "Halliburton shareholders...have witnessed a 50% rise in the company's stock over the past year. Halliburton also has a $300 million deal with the Navy, and a $183 million contract from military events in Afghanistan. The lucrative deals are just the most extreme examples of a trend toward privatization in government policy... The Defense Secretary who spearheaded the move toward outsourcing? Dick Cheney.... 'At the end of the day, neither these companies nor their employees are bound by military justice, and it is up to them whether to show up or not. The result is that there have been delays in setting up showers for soldiers, getting them cooked meals and so on,' said P.W. Singer, a Brookings Institution scholar. While thousands of US soldiers are taking cold showers and wondering when the next meal is coming, somewhere, a group of Halliburton executives -- and probably some Bush administration officials -- are thinking to themselves, 'Mission accomplished.'"

10-Oct-03 Iraq War Lies The Daily Enron: "George W. Bush has his own action figure, so isn't it time for Dick Cheney to have one as well? Doctors' orders would prohibit too much action from the Cheney doll, so maybe it could just talk when you pull its string instead. While most toys of this variety usually feature several wacky sayings, the Cheney doll would have to be sold at a discount: Lately the vice president has only been capable of parrot-like repetition of one message. The vice president was at it again this morning, delivering a speech that once again highlights the supposed link between Iraq and the events of September 11 that even Resident Bush has recently repudiated: 'Iraq has become the central front in the war on terror. Our mission in Iraq is a great undertaking and part of a larger mission that the United States accepted now more than two years ago. Sept. 11, 2001, changed everything for this country.'"

On Every Important Issue, Busheviks 'Cut and Run' 06-Oct-03 Bush Failure
"Check out what Flynt Leverett, a former National Security Council staffer who dealt with the crisis in Israel had to say about Bush's efforts, and see if it sounds slightly familiar: 'The administration has laid out a transformative agenda for the region, and achieving a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was supposed to be an important part of that vision. In pursuing such a solution, the administration has never been willing to do what it needed to on the ground. They always flinched when they ran into difficulties.' Hmm, announcing a huge plan with tons of political fanfare, but then never following up with the promised money or requisite attention? Why, the Bush team only pulled that strategy with No Child Left Behind, the African AIDS Initiative, AmeriCorps funding, and the Clear Skies Initiative. Five proposals ranging from foreign aid to the environment doesn't necessarily constitute a pattern, does it? (Yes, Mr. President, it does.)"

BERLIN Germany's role as Israel's most steadfast European ally, a foreign policy doctrine that was enshrined and sustained by the  legacy of the Holocaust,is beginning to crack with the country quietly  suspending weapons sales to Israel and leading politicians, led by conservatives, employing strikingly harsh language to criticize Israeli military action in the West Bank policy adviser to Prime Ministe Ariel Sharon of Israel, that were described as "cool."
"In a widely publicized letter to Israel's ambassador to Germany, Norbert Bluem, a former labor minister under Chancellor Helmut Kohl, described the Israeli offensive  as a "war of annihilation" - the very term employed by  Adolf Hitler to describe the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union."

IF YOU PLAN TO HAVE SEX TONIGHT YOU SHOULD                                  READ THIS
The most common misconception being foisted upon us right now concerns sexually  active Americans. We are told that if a man  uses a condom the transference of the deadly virus is virtually eliminated.     Nothing could be further from the truth. Of the body fluids that the AIDS virus is found in, semen  is the least. As a matter of fact, in every  single study ever published on the subject, no one has found a  significant amount in anyone's semen. It just isn't there in huge numbers.
There is usually only about one virus per millilitre,  a statistically irrelevant amount. One copious ejaculation might produce only one or two viruses.
This is substantiated in the medical literature.  But, just for argument's sake, let's say all the medical studies are wrong.
Let's pretend that there are countless millions  of AIDS viruses in the ejaculation. Are you  aware that condoms are riddled with  microscopic or larger holes?
Studies show that even the smallest  holes found in condoms are two to ten times larger than the AIDS virus. It's like shooting a golf ball through a basketball hoop. Condoms have not,  will not, and cannot prevent AIDS.

                        | George W Bush has been Google bombed.
Web users entering the words "miserable failure" into the popular  search engine are directed to the biography of the president on the White House website. The trick is possible because Google searches more than  just the contents of web pages - it also counts how often a site is linked to, and with what words. Thus, members of an online community can affect the results of Google searches - called "Google bombing" - by linking their sites to a chosen one.
Weblogger Adam Mathes is credited with inventing the practice in 2001,when he used it to link the phrase "talentless hack" to a friend's website. The search engine can be manipulated by a fairly small group of users, one report suggested.  Newsday newspaper says as few as 32 web pages with the words "miserable failure" link to the Bush biography.
The Bush administration has been on the receiving end of pointed Google bombs before.  In the run-up to the Iraq war, internet users manipulated Google so the phrase "weapons of mass destruction" led to a joke page saying "These  Weapons of Mass Destruction cannot be displayed."

The site suggests "clicking the regime change button", or "If you are George Bush and typed the country's name in the address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly (IRAQ)". |

APE - Animals, People and the Environment: Dan Lyons (Uncaged)   Animals People & Environment XENOTRANSPLANTATION: A NEW WAY OF CONSUMING ANIMALS? Dan Lyons  (Uncaged) (Talk presented to Mediterranean Vegetarian Festival, Malta October 1999.)  1. Introduction Xenotransplantation is the transplant of LIVE cells, tissues and organs from one species 1. Introduction Xenotransplantation is the transplanting of LIVE cells, tissues and organs from one species to another species. Specifically, we are talking about the prospect of transplanting material from pigs into human beings. Although, in the meantime, a range of quite gruesome animal experiments have taken place where, for example, organs from pigs have been transplanted into rhesus monkeys and baboons 1 , some of whom have been captured from the wild. 2.)The reason why xenotransplantation is being developed is that companies such as Novartis are trying to exploit a gap in the market for organ transplants. 3.)  There are growing waiting lists for organs and, currently, shortfalls in the supply. Although heart valves from pigs have been transplanted into human beings for the past twenty-five years, these valves are preserved  in glutaraldehyde, thereby rendering them lifeless - they are not living tissue, and perform a relatively simple, mechanical function. Furthermore, it is believed that they do not harbour microorganisms such as viruses that could infect the recipient and then move into the general population. 4. ) Obviously, from an animal-rights perspective, whether the tissue is alive or not is beside the point as both kinds  of tissue involve the exploitation of animals. However, modern xenotransplantation threatens to open up a brand new, never seen before area of animal abuse. This means that fighting xenotransplantation must become a priority for animal protection campaigners around the world.  The fact that xenotransplantation is not yet established means there is a unique opportunity to tackle a form of animal abuse when it is perhaps at its most vulnerable, rather than reacting too late. 5.) The development of xenotransplantation The research team is which probably at the forefront of efforts to develop xenotransplantation is Imutran, who are based in Cambridge, England. Imutran was formed in the mid 1980s by David White -an immunologist, and the Papworth Hospital transplant surgeon John Wallwork. Imutran's macabre vision has been to develop genetically-corrupted pigs (through the addition of a human gene to the pig's genome) who would be kept in unnatural, barren conditions, and then slaughtered and dismembered. Their organs would then be transplanted into patients with organ failure. 6.)In 1995, Imutran caused international shockwaves by claiming that they were ready to transplant pig hearts into humans within a year. Many commentators, including doctors, transplant surgeons and other scientists, condemned this announcement as not only grossly premature because of the lack of scientific basis for such a move, but also they noted the presence of powerful financial motivations for such a prediction. By exaggerating the prospects of xenotransplantation, the company hoped to make itself more attractive to potential investors or buyers. 7.) It seems to have worked. Imutran was bought by the Swiss pharmaceutical corporation Sandoz in 1996. Sandoz had a particular interest in transplantation generally because it was the manufacturer of the drug which completely dominates the market for immunosuppressant drugs: Cyclosporine. 8.)The following year, Sandoz merged with another Swiss drug company, Ciba Geigy, to form a powerful and very wealthy new drug corporation - Novartis. Today, Novartis is in competition with a couple of U.S.-based biotechnology firms for a share of what is predicted to be an $11 billion annual market for pig organs and associated drug treatments 8 - if it works, and if it is allowed to go ahead. Imutran's prediction of pig(hibred human)hearts in humans by th  end of 1996 did not materialise.  Now, in October 1999, no permission has yet been granted to transplant organs from pigs into humans anywhere in the world. (Although some sporadic experiments have taken place in the U.S. and elsewhere with pig cells and external pig livers) STATUS 2001???>

Nazis take over the world
[PART 1] [last update: July 1996]

                        | From Lee #1 This appeared last July in Wired magazine, inter al.. Just stumbled on it via a newspaper in Mumbai. ------------------------------------------------------------------
Neo-Nazis, Extremist Jews Unite   Reuters 09:42 AM Jul. 17, 2003 PT

French neo-Nazis formed an alliance with extremist Jewish groups on the Internet to publish a torrent of hate messages directed against Arabs and Muslims, according to a report by a leading anti-racist group.
Members of extreme-right groups were prepared to set aside their anti-Semitic feelings to share Web space and know-how with extremist pro-Israeli campaigners, amid a rise in violence in the Middle East, the report said.
"This is a new phenomenon," said Mouloud Aounit, head of the MRAP* group which published the 170-page report. "We wanted to ring an alarm bell over the worrying development of this form of racism which is not only virtual, but has also spread to everyday life."
The report said 26 websites, traced to right-wing and Jewish extremists groups in France, operated from the same server in the United States between 1999 and March this year.
Members of the groups also shared advice on how to send messages without leaving electronic trails.
Investigators believed the sites were taken down because of disagreement between the groups over the U.S.-led war in Iraq.  Jewish extremists supported the action but some French far right-wingers were against it.
French police had no reaction to the report and France's main Jewish organization, CRIF, was not immediately available for comment.
Aounit said the unlikely alliance could resurface soon.
The report said that between 2001 and 2003, the groups sent 1,000 messages a day, including incitements to attack mosques in the hope of triggering civil war between Arabs and other French people.
They also included messages calling for the assassination of President Jacques Chirac, referred to ironically as Ben Shirak, whom extremists accused of handing power to Muslim interests.
A year ago, a member of the anti-foreigner National Republican Movement tried to gun down Chirac at the annual Bastille Day parade, days after posting a message on a British neo-Nazi site boasting that he would soon be famous.
Chirac has called for a crackdown on racism following anti-Semitic attacks and signs that the war in Iraq had increased tension between France's Jews and Muslims.
However, Aounit said the government remained indifferent to the flood of hate messages pouring out over the Internet.
"There is obviously the question of legislation, which must be addressed at the European level," Aounit said. "But if there is the political will, if you give cyber-cops the means to investigate, you could very rapidly arrest, identify the authors."

Los Angeles -- The largest group of immigrants to the United States since the beginning of the century is embracing the nation's lifestyle by the millions -- buying homes, speaking English, becoming citizens and intermarrying at surprisingly high rates, according to a new study of national census data.  Commentators brought together by the report's sponsors yesterday  in Los Angeles called the conclusions consistent with the ethnic transformation of  Southern California.
The study's upbeat conclusions are encapsulated in its title, ``From Newcomers to New Americans: The Successful Integration of Immigrants Into American Society.'' It was commissioned by the National Immigration Forum, the leading pro-immigration advocacy group in Washington, D.C. Opponents of current immigration levels, however, said the study was biased and ignored indications that the nation is fracturing along ethnic and social lines.
The study found that immigrants -- mostly from Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean -- are adjusting to life in the United States in much the same way as newcomers from Europe did earlier in the century.
Relying on U.S. census data, the study focuses on four measures of assimilation: citizenship, home ownership, English acquisition and intermarriage. All were found to be on the rise among immigrants and their children.
``Contemporary immigrants overwhelmingly do what newcomers have always done: slowly, often painfully, but quite assuredly, embrace the language, cultural norms and loyalties of America,'' said Gregory Rodriguez, the study's author and a research scholar at Pepperdine University's Institute for Public Policy.   The Environmental Movement’s Retreat From Advocating U.S. Population Stabilization (1970-1998): A First Draft of History Roy Beck and Leon Kolankiewicz June 2001 "Causes 1 & 2"      In 1972, the U.S. Total Fertility Rate fell to below the 2.1 births per woman that marks the replacement-level fertility rate. By 1976, fertility had hit an all-time low of 1.7 and hovered just above that for years. A common remembrance of aging population activists is their memory of the night in 1973 when TV broadcasters announced that the 1972 U.S. fertility rate had reached zero population growth. The American people apparently were profoundly confused by this announcement, with many  believing the U.S. population problem had been solved. (In fact, because of what demographers call "population momentum," it takes a country up to 70 years after the replacement-level fertility  rate is reached to actually stop growing. But by 1972, the fertility rate had indeed declined to a level low enough to eventually produce zero population growth, as long as immigration remained reasonably low.)
With zero population growth supposedly achieved (or at least approached), many people in the population movement may have felt their activism was no longer needed. Americans had reduced  the size of the average family as far as was necessary. On average they were living up to the battle  cry of "stop at two." Many activists shifted their former population energies into feminism, other aspects of conservation and environmentalism, or moved on to other pursuits altogether. "Full-Formula"environmentalism that dealt with both Individual Impact and Population Size factors shrank  to a small core constituency as quickly as it had burst into a mass popular movement. The  population committees of environmental groups lost popularity and significance or disbanded altogether. |

New World Race Disorder? Anthony Milne gives a personal view
of the Middle East conflict
This journal has consistently opposed Britain's war on Iraq because we believe that Britain should decide
on its own defence and war-fighting priorities, not tag along on Uncle Sam's coat-tails. But now that the
war has come and (almost) gone we, as Britons, must ask whether we will ultimately benefit from its
aftermath or not.
Should the Right oppose America's war on Iraq because the US is a neo-colonialist, occupying or
imperialist power? Here we should beware of knee-jerk labels used entirely by the Left.
Colonisation and imperialism mean that foreign nationals enter your country, get into positions of
enormous cultural and political power, and impose alien ideologies upon you without your consent.
The only peoples that have suffered this fate in modern times on a massive scale are white, western
peoples, who themselves are reduced to being only 10 per cent of the world's population.

Every non-white person you see in the street or on television tells you one thing: "You are now living in a multi-cultural society because we have made it so, and there is sod-all you can do about it." ‘The war on Iraq’ on BBC TV news is presented by George Alagiah (a man with a name which sounds African but who in fact is Sri-Lankan) who dialogues with Ragih Owah, who sounds like an Iraqi himself but looks like a black man, while another black man, John Pienaar, deigns to pontificate on the political implications of it all. You] The Iraqis, allegedly living under a brutal dictatorship, at least had the privilege of being broadcast to by genuine indigenous Arabs!" |

Core syllabus This course examines the evolution of population policies and programmes at both the international and national levels. It is thus concerned with the interplay between politics and demography in shaping policies and programmes on health, fertility and family planning, population distribution, and population size. Content The international context; the role of the United Nations and other international agencies; the role of USAID and other major donors. How have priorities changed over time and what forces have shaped these changes? What impact do these external forces have in determining policies and programmes at the national level? What are the benefits and distortions involved in the interplay between the donor community and recipient countries? What role is played by international NGOs? What are the broad regional differences in approaches to these issues and how do these differences arise? The role of broader scientific and political contexts: sustained economic growth and sustainable development; colonial heritage; small is beautiful; the Club of Rome and zero population growth movement; the politics of the new right and the Reagan administration; the women’s movement; and organised religion, especially the Vatican and Islam. The national context: the shaping of policies and programmes in individual countries and their consequences for programmes in other countries. Examples of influential policies and programmes will include China’s health and family planning programmes; and Indonesia and Bangladesh as shapers of international policy on the management of family planning programmes. How policies and programmes respond to differing circumstances: the role of religion and tradition; the public/private mix; strong and weak states; levels of development; democracy and human rights; coercion and choice; experiments and demonstration effects; political will; and the role of NGOs. During the course the policies and programmes of a wide range of societies and agencies will be examined, including examples of successful and unsuccessful programmes. Lessons about good practice will be drawn. Teaching Ten x 1½-hour lectures and ten x 1½-hour seminars, MT. Reading list A detailed reading list will be provided at the start of the course. A good introduction to international debates can be obtained from L A Mazur (Ed), Beyond the Numbers: A Reader on Population, Consumption and the Environment, Island Press, Washington, 1994.          Does Race Exist? If races are defined as genetically discrete groups, no. But researchers can use some  genetic information to group individuals into clusters with medical relevance By Michael J. Bamshad and Steve E. Olson Look around on the streets of any major city, and you will see a sampling of the outward variety of humanity: skin tones ranging from milk-white to dark brown; hair textures running the gamut from fine and stick-straight to thick and wiry. People often use physical characteristics such as these--along with  area of geographic origin and shared culture--to group themselves and others into "races." But how valid is the concept of race from a biological standpoint? Do physical features reliably say anything informative about a person's genetic makeup beyond indicating that the individual has genes for blue  eyes or curly hair? The problem is hard in part because the implicit definition of what makes a person a member of a particular race differs from region to region across the globe. Someone classified as "black" in the U.S., for instance, might be considered "white" in Brazil and "colored" (a category distinguished from both "black" and "white") in South Africa.

Yet common definitions of race do sometimes work well to divide groups according to genetically determined propensities for certain diseases. Sickle cell disease is usually found among people of largely African or Mediterranean descent, for instance, whereas cystic fibrosis is far more common among those of European ancestry. In addition, although the results have been controversial, a handful of studies have suggested that African-Americans are more likely to respond poorly to some drugs for cardiac disease than are members of other groups. Over the past few years, scientists have collected data about the genetic constitution of populations around the world in an effort to probe the link between ancestry and patterns of disease. These data are now providing answers to several highly emotional and contentious questions: Can genetic information be used to distinguish human groups having a common heritage and to assign individuals to particular ones? Do such groups correspond well to predefined descriptions now widely used to specify race? And, more practically, does dividing people by familiar racial definitions or by genetic similarities say anything useful about how members of those groups experience disease or respond  to drug treatment?

                                        | In general, we would answer the first question yes, the second no, and offer a qualified yes to the third. Our answers rest on several generalizations about race and genetics. Some groups do differ genetically from others, but how groups are divided depends on which genes are examined; simplistically put, you might fit into one group based on your skin-color genes but another based on a different characteristic. Many studies have demonstrated that roughly 90 percent of human genetic variation occurs within a population living on a given continent, whereas about 10 percent of the variation distinguishes continental populations. In other words,  individuals from different populations are, on average, just slightly more different from one another than are individuals from the same population. Human populations are very similar, but they often can  be distinguished.

INDIVIDUALS from different populations are, on average, just slightly more different  from one another than are individuals from  the same population |
Classifying Humans As a first step to identifying links between social definitions of race and genetic heritage, scientists need a way to divide groups reliably according to their ancestry. Over the past 100,000 years or so, anatomically modern humans have migrated from Africa to other parts of the world, and members of our species have increased dramatically in number. This spread has left a distinct signature in our DNA. To determine the degree of relatedness among groups, geneticists rely on tiny variations, or polymorphisms, in the DNA--specifically in the sequence of base pairs, the building blocks of DNA. Most of these polymorphisms do not occur within genes, the stretches of DNA that encode the information for making proteins (the molecules that constitute much of our bodies and carry out the chemical reactions of life). Accordingly, these common variations are neutral, in that they do not directly affect a particular trait. Some polymorphisms do occur in genes, however; these can contribute to individual variation in traits and to genetic diseases.

                        | The English Arrive But Are Wiped Out [The English Arrive But Are Wiped Out Or Amilate? Ed] In 1585, the first English settlement in North America was established on an island off the coast of the present day state of North Carolina. This expedition failed due to a lack of agricultural expertise, and a second attempt was launched in 1587. This second expedition, led by one John White, was more successful and landed in a territory they called Virginia, honoring the English Queen Elizabeth 1 (who was alleged to have been a virgin).
John White sailed back to England for further supplies: the war with Spain prevented him from returning  until 1590. Upon his return the entire settlement had vanished, never to be heard of or seen again.
The only possible explanation for the vanished colony could have been an attack and massacre by American Indians (called Amerinds): if disease or some natural cause had killed them, some bodies would have been found.
The First Successful Colony: Virginia Undaunted, the English launched a third attempt: in 1607, the colony of Jamestown in Virginia was established as a private project run by a British company, the Virginia Company of London.
This company recruited not only settlers to go out to the colony of Virginia to establish farms, but also engaged in the forceful abduction of Whites to be used as laborers in the new colony: not only criminals  but also vagrants and very often children were grabbed off the streets of London and sent off as forced  laborers to the new colony.
The Virginia Company was not a success: disease and starvation saw thousands of the first immigrants die, and in 1622, a furious war, the first race war in North America, broke out between  the Whites and the Amerinds.
This war ended indecisively with the Indians retreating deeper inland, but the events caused the British government to revoke the Virginia Company's license  to trade in the colony and took over the  running of Virginia itself: the first formal British colony had been created.
This country is so racist that it hides the history such as the  Abolitionist Frederic Douglas & child labor rights activists Chares Dickens were partners speaking in a lecture series that toured throughout Europe.

                                        | It should be noted that the modern ethnological word for such groups - isolates- is misleading. It reflects  the restrictive social conditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Since the "one drop" rule defining an African American would not be legally instituted anywhere in the nation until after Reconstruction, this definition does not take into account the fact that throughout the seventeen and early eighteen hundreds free people of black and white ancestry intermarried not only among themselves but with families of Indian and white ancestry. Furthermore, members of mixed race families intermarried with the surrounding whites, despite the fact that many states had passed laws outlawing such unions. Virginia Easley Demarce, a specialist in this area of research points out, that one of the major contentions of  tri-racial Americans is that they were more likely bi-racial or Indian and white. As she point out, "The reason why  tri-racial ancestry has been downplayed is clear.
Throughout most of American history the legal, social, educational, and economic disadvantages of being African -American were so great that it was preferable for a person to be considered almost anything else."
Few of these groups have a tribal identification that can be traced back to the colonial period. Over the years, through acculturation and assimilation, they have lost whatever Indian languages and traditions they might have descended from. Many have worked very hard to attain legal recognition as Indian tribes over the last few years  but some are still not recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Indian adoption during the colonial period of English surnames such as Blunt, Tucker, Revels and Harris only adds to the difficulty of tracing Indian forbears. Thanks, however, to the contribution of an anthropologist with some linguistic expertise, the Locklears can point to  their own name as one instance of the Lumbee group's Native American origins.   Steve E. Olson The outward signs on which most definitions of race are based--such as skin color  and hair texture--are dictated by a handful of genes. But the other genes of two people of the same "race" can be very different. Conversely, two people of different  "races" can share more genetic similarity than two individuals of the same race. Nevertheless, scientists can use genetics to sort most large populations according to their ancestral geographic origin. This approach does not work as well for populations resulting from recent mixing with other groups, however. The medical implications of racial genetic differences are still under debate.

Not nations
This brings me to Iraq, the Middle East, and colored people across the whole of the Third World. There
is one thing that differentiates them from us Europeans: very few of them live in proper(to you cliche)
ethnic nations; they dwell in entirely arbitrary territorial states. Different religious and language groups were
thrown together through accidents of history and have no common cultural denominator. Therefore there is
no ‘Iraqi people’, any more than there is a ‘Zimbabwean’, ‘Pakistani’ or ‘Peruvian’ people.
[Or English people for that matter ED]
The Americans will have one hell of a job trying to ‘rebuild’ Iraq when the fighting is finally over because the
region consists of Arabs, Turkomens, Kurds and other minorities. Most of them speak Arabic, but then
again so does the rest of the Middle East. You could take an Iraqi [Man] out of Iraq and put him in Egypt
and no one would be any the wiser. [And versa visa take a English man out England and put him in any
part of what's called Great Briton and no one would be any the wiser so what ? Is that really true?ED]
of One reason why Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990 was because he said that after World War
I Kuwait was originally allocated to ‘Iraq’, which itself before the war was ‘Mesopotamia’.
There is a certain logic to that.
This brings me to America's and Britain's war on ‘Iraq’. President George W. Bush is on a roll: he is not only
roaring his mighty military motor into the festering fly-blown Middle East, with the British tagging along in the
jet-stream, he has thrown away the steering wheel! If it means, after Iraq, sorting out the next country on the
‘axis-of-evil’ short list then he might well do it.
By shaking up the world order and undermining international treaties, perhaps Bush and his gang will
inadvertently bust up or weaken permanently the ‘liberal’ institutions which have done enormous social harm
to the West. ‘Multi-culturalism’ is destroying the West in a way that no other world ideology or religion has
ever done - because it involves the transfer of populations across international borders; and the transfer is
all one way: westwards. It is the closest thing you can get to political criminality.
Hence we in Britain are suffering from the ‘liberal internationalism’, not so much of America but of the United
Nations, the EU and the all-powerful home-grown liberal lawyers and politicians - the New Élites that control
commerce, media and public opinion and who owe allegiance not to the people they govern but to each other
 - so that they ensure they remain in power.
Re-ordering the world
If America is part of the New World Order, then Bush, whether intending to or not, is about to re-order it. He
has by-passed its main institution, the UN, and its Security Council, with its bunch of hypocritical human-rights
abusers like Syria, China, Pakistan, and Angola.
History is buffeted by abrupt changes in direction, and powerful leaders are thrown up who have an inordinate
influence on world affairs. Bush is one of those unusual men who are about to do just that. He talks in
gunslinger language and has no time for verbal niceties. One consequence of the flood of Civil Rights and
permissive open-door legislation forced on America by the Democrats in the 1960s - and which the
Republicans did nothing to reverse - has been to allow Islamic suicide bombers to check in at US hotels,
take flying lessons, and assault with impunity the economic and military symbols of the most powerful country
in the world.
America seeks revenge
The American military, as well as the intelligence services, now seek revenge on that part of the world that
has humiliated it: the Middle East. After September 11, the Americans have lost their innocence and have
become brutal in a brutal world. Iraq is a handy target because the Americans have been strafing and blitzing
it for the last 12 years, so they might as well finish the job once and for all and get the ‘regime-change’ they
have wanted all along.
The present Republican administration is unlike any of its predecessors. George Bush's cohorts like Paul
Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney and Richard Perle were hawks before they reached the White House, and were
planning to boost American military power greatly in the 1990s. None of the Bush crew are liberals in the
European sense. "My job is to protect America, and that is exactly what I'm going to do," says Bush, and he
has being saying that over and over for the past 18 months so that the other countries get the message.
Bush has set up the Homeland Security Department that is already tightening up its lax immigration and
visa regime. He has a long way to go, since there remain powerful liberal bureaucrats who will do their best
to stymie any restrictive laws, but he has changed America's liberal direction in a way that will be difficult to
reverse in the long run, since the Democrats are going to have to go along with it.
Bush couldn't care less about Europe or NATO, and won't brook any restraints on US power as have
happened in the past. From Bush's point of view America has suffered too long from the humiliation of
Vietnam, and US troops have actually been thrown out of tinpot countries like Haiti, Lebanon and Somalia
when they thought they were acting for humanitarian, not imperialistic, reasons.
Some on the Right believe that the present liberal world order cannot be broken without a violent disruption
to the status-quo - and it doesn't matter how it happens or who does it. If the old order is rocked to its
foundations, social violence may take place on a wider scale than at present. This is to be deplored of
course; but if it happens it will be a bit like chickens coming home to roost.
The war in Iraq will turn the ratchet up a bit further: it will screw up the Middle East Moslems who have taken
it upon themselves to colonise European cities.
Demographically, Europe is now a province of Islam, hosting some 16 million Moslem immigrants,
very few of whom have any affinity with European peoples or its traditions. They are already blazing
with anger at America - which they consider to be run by fundamentalist Christians and Jews - and are ready
at the drop of a hat to go on the rampage.
Likely backlash
If Europe is flooded with yet more Arab refugees in the aftermath of the war - and they
will use every excuse to get to Europe - then at the very least the ensuing cultural chaos
and lawlessness in a Europe already overflowing with illegal foreigners could result in
an almighty backlash. Europe will become a Third World charnel house, and gun crime
and Moslem terrorism is bound to increase.

When the bombs start going off and the pinko liberal police forces - whose members occasionally
get stabbed to death by asylum seekers - can no longer cope, then indigenous European peoples
 will get very angry indeed.
In the meantime the recent turmoil in the EU, NATO and the UN - all anti-nationalist institutions - means that
those institutions will all lose credibility. The current crisis among European governments is because Bush
is preparing to break up the UN veto system. The US intends to retaliate against those countries that have
opposed it on the Iraq issue - France, Germany, Belgium and Turkey.
Most intellectuals in the ‘New Europe’ that Defence Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld referred to are nationalists
who have campaigned for their own separate nations or enclaves within Europe. The ‘Old Europe’ that
America has collided with is the bankrupt ideological world of enforced multi-culturalism and the liberal
authoritarianism of Chirac, Blair, Schroder and their Scandinavian hangers-on. The EU has become a softer
version of communism, complete with the politicisation of police and local authorities. Many of those in Eastern
European countries like Poland are beginning to resent the Warsaw Pact Mark II which they have just entered,
with its rigged markets, and its thousands of onerous rules and anti-race laws.
Change is in the air. Let us hope that some good will come out Bush's brand of ‘self-defence’ imperialism.

From Trauma to Cultural Memory: The Second Generation and the Shoah Places and Memories Revisioning the Shoah Centre CATH 29 April 2001
My name is Griselda Pollock and I am Director of the newly instituted Centre for Cultural Analysis, Theory and  History. This is our first formal event and it is entirely appropriate. CentreCATH is dedicated to breaching barriers and divisions, between areas of knowledge and practice. We are dedicated to opening a space of encounter and dialogue between art, its history and analysis, popular culture, Jewish Studies, and feminist studies. Culture is where our identities are formed through language, images, as well as concepts and ideas. To analyse culture is to analyse ourselves, our values, our ways of understanding things, our limits and our blindnesses. Artists work at the limits of given fields of knowledge and accepted ideas. They question and explore, reflecting us back to ourselves in a necessary challenge to the complacency of fixed ideas and familiar habits. Artists produce knowledge just as much as philosophers or historians. In arranging the exhibition Places that we mark today with this conference, CentreCATH declared that commitment to the recognition of art not as just the elite icing on the social cake: but a vital part of living and changing culture  that too few experience and let enter into their lives. But we are also committed in CentreCATH to considering  difficult issues that face our culture today. Nothing is so difficult or so timely as the consideration of the hostility to difference, the intolerance of particularity, the indifference to the needs of others that is so current now with debates about race, ethnic cleansing, asylum seekers current legislation. We welcome you all to our conference today on Revisioning the Shoah: Places and Memories.
This year the British marked the Holocaust with the first ever Holocaust Memorial Day. Last week the Jewish  world observed its day of memoration: Yom Ha-Shoah. The British government chose the end of January for their event because it coincided with the anniversary of the liberation of the death camp at Auschwitz by the Russian forces. Yom Ha-Shoah marks the date of the most vivid amongst many courageous acts of resistance to Nazism: the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942.
I know there are present here today people for whom this is not a matter of commemoration. They lived through and suffered through events so terrible and atrocious that it is hard for words, images or even testimony to convey the suffering to those of us who listen and watch. In the last decade, it seemed that the  world finally and seriously awoke from a persistent amnesia. The year 1992 marked both the institution of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. and the release of a popular Hollywood film that  took one tiny exceptional story of the horrors of the Holocaust to a world audience of hundreds of millions.
The profits from this film have been spent recording the testimony of all living survivors of the Shoah —  joining other archives of testimony such as the Fortunoff Archive at Yale University and that at Yad Vashem  in Israel, or even now at the Imperial War Museum in London whose exhibition on this theme opened only in the year 2000.

HISTORY & BACKGROUND The Naming of California The state of California was named for Califia, reputedly a Black virgin queen. She was said to rule an "island nation"  of Amazons, where gold was the only metal. Even as late as 1707, some European maps continued to depict  California as an island. While many California children hear the story in school of the origin of our State’s name, Were there Blacks in California at such an early date? Could Queen Califia's legend possibly bear seeds of truth regarding her racial identity? Indeed there is a long history of Africans having arrived on American shores at very early dates, and of Spanish ancestry sometimes having been mixed with Black.
Spanish California (Northern New Spain) - Before 1821 Racially mixed Spaniards became somewhat common as early as 800 A.D. with the conquest of Spain by the Muslims, who then ruled there for 500 years. There was further mixing during Spain's long period of trade with Carthage and Morocco. African sailors were also members of the Spanish expeditions which came to parts of  North America, including Mexico, where a fair number of them stayed and became permanent residents in the 1500's. Further, there are a number of Native American legends, which often appear to be historically accurate, concerning the arrival of early Blacks, some of whom were shipwrecked sailors.
Many Afro-Spaniards were fully integrated into their societies, while others were slaves. Those in Mexico played a huge role in helping to expand the frontier areas northward from Old Mexico. At that time "New Spain" consisted of today's Mexico and the lands now occupied by Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California and other parts of the southwestern United States. It has been estimated by several respected historians that by 1790, one of every four Spanish speakers in Lower California (now the country of Mexico) had some degree of Black ancestry, and a Spanish
census of that time actually identified 18% of the California population as being of African descent. See Before 1821, European-born Spaniards held the most power in California, followed next by American-born Spaniards, and then by light-skinned mixed bloods. Few African Americans attained high rank in the army, but they could often rise to influential positions in civilian life. Many were in positions as supervisors at the Missions, and a number of them  were granted choice tracts of land called Ranchos. Mexico’s independence from Spain, won in 1821, helped mixed- bloods obtain more (and larger) land grants, and to attain higher military rank and wealth. Slavery was abolished in Mexico in 1829.
The Missions, Presidios and Pueblos In the 1700's, many frontier soldiers and settlers were Afro-Mexican, and groups of these were integral to the founding of the ~stephan/anthony/missions.html"California Missions (where Natives were to be “civilized”), the military Presidios (to guard the Missions and settlers), and the Pueblos (the farming communities which became our cities).
The Mexican Republic of California -- 1821-1846 By 1821, when Mexico became independent of Spain, the colonists of Upper California had learned to trade and co- exist with trappers, sailors, traders, explorers, and hunters from other countries. Because Spain had been involved in  a number of wars, the Spanish fleet had often been unable to spare ships to bring supplies to them. The colonists had  turned to trade with England, France, Russia and the United States. Regular trade was carried on with St. Louis through the Santa Fe Trail, and hides from Spanish cattle (which later became known as “California greenbacks”)  were being supplied to Boston shoe manufacturers by sea. Once the new Mexican government took over Upper California, life there began to change dramatically. The Spanish government had already begun issuing land grants for Ranchos in 1786, but these were few, under tight control, and the land had remained the property of the Crown. Only the "use" of the land had been granted. Once the area became the Mexican Republic, however, hundreds of huge Rancho land grants were made, which included ownership of the land itself. Jealous of the amount of lands controlled by the priests, the Republic abolished the Mission system in 1834. Many of the churches fell into disrepair, but have been restored and can be visited. Within 12 years after the secularization of the Missions, over 700 Rancho land grants were made, many to white Californians, who were required to become nominal Catholics and citizens of Mexico, and who often married into prominent Mexican families. Others were granted to new immigrants from Mexico who already had position, money and connections. While originally intended to encourage agriculture and industry, reward soldiers, and provide for settlers who had no land, the land grant system rapidly deteriorated into one of favoritism. The Mission Indians (who had been well trained as Spanish peons by then), became  Rancho workers to survive. Since paperwork was not always in order by American standards, however, many of these land grants were not recognized  by the Land Commission set up in 1851 after U.S. Statehood was granted. In fact, some remain "unconfirmed" to this day.
Ranchos and Adobes Anyone can tour the Missions and Presidios, or visit the greatly expanded cities which the Pueblos eventually became. Even many Californians, however, are unaware of the giant Ranchos, which have become incorporated and annexed as  parts of cities throughout California. While their borders of the Ranchos are seldom evident, some cities bear their names. A large number of the beautiful old Adobe houses (made from mud) are also still in existence. While some can not be visited  (and may only be viewed from the street), others do offer tours and sometimes have small museums connected to them.  A few are currently used as the homes of Historical Societies. California Becomes a State -- 1846-1850 Statehood for California became inevitable after the 1836 revolt of Texas and its declaration of independence from Mexico. When Texas was finally annexed to the United States in 1845, the U.S. unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate the purchase  of New Mexico and California. By then the Mexican government had become suspicious of American encroachment into Upper California by troops and surveyors. Finally, in 1846 there was an uprising in which a group of Americans created their own flag with a grizzly bear, and claimed their locality to be independent of Mexico. Shortly afterwards the U.S. declared war on Mexico, and by 1847 had occupied Mexico City. Andres Pico, a Black-Mexican, met with Major John Fremont as  the representative from California to discuss the terms of surrender. A military officer, this famous Pico brother is best  known for having defeated Gen. Stephen Watts Kearney at the Battle of Pascual. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was  signed in February 1848, and Mexico ceded all its territories in the Southwest to the United States, including Upper California.
The wheels of government turned slowly, however, with considerable discussion as to whether the form of government in  California should be that of a Territory or a State. Meanwhile, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Fort! Local residents grew tired of waiting, drew up a state constitution making California a "free" state excluding slavery, and chose state officials in 1849. Finally, the Bill giving Statehood to California was signed in February 1850. The Gold Rush Era - - 1848-1860 Gold Rush Country is considered to cover 300-400 miles along the California side of the Sierra Nevada, mainly along what  is now Highway 49. It has been estimated by the California Division of Mines and Geology that at least 500 towns were established there between 1848 and 1860. Most have disappeared, but some towns were able to adapt to 20th Century changes, and their people found reasons to stay after the gold had played out. Some locations now consist only of a  historical marker erected by various Chambers of Commerce, the California Division of Highways, local historical  societies, and the like. Many maps are available for tourists who wish to visit the ghost towns, and several of the towns  that lasted and thrived have tours and hold commemorative events.
In 1849 alone, at least 41,000 people arrived by sea for the Gold Rush. By mid-summer, 400 deserted ships sat in San  Francisco Bay. Some Forty-Niners had sailed from the East coast around the Cape of Good Horn; some had chosen a much harder shortcut through the jungles of Panama, where the canal had not yet been built. Others came by land in wagon trains, and even on foot. Numerous countries were represented by immigrants from China, Europe, South America  and several Pacific Island nations. Blacks also came to California, as servants, slaves and free men, alone and in groups, to work in various capacities. There are numerous books available about the Gold Rush; most barely mention Black Mining Camps and even fewer tell  of Black Miners. We know they were there, because the foreign press of the time often published engravings of them, and  there are also some photographs of them in print in America. Their presence is also mentioned in a number of diaries and letters found in special collections. Rudolph Lapp has done a tremendous service with his book entitled Blacks in Gold Rush California.
Discrimination in California - 1846 – the early 1900's Many white Americans brought their prejudices with them from their old homes when they came to California.
Laws and   policies similar to those “back home”, such as lack of equal education, disenfranchisement and the inability to testify in court were enacted and carried out, and discrimination often ran high. While not allowed to serve in the military  in California in the very early years, African-American military men and their units have belatedly been recognized at several Although the African-American population was never large by comparison, that did not keep them from   of discrimination, they formed their own churches, newspapers, literary societies, libraries, relief agencies, social clubs, fraternal groups, political organizations, women’s clubs and civil rights organizations.

Quote of the Week.        "Imagine that you could travel back in time to the year 1900.        Imagine that you stand on a soap box on a city street corner in 1900        and you say to the gathering crowd, "By 1955, people will be flying        at supersonic speeds in sleek aircraft and traveling coast to coast        in just a few hours."
In 1900, it would have been insane to suggest that. In 1900,        airplanes did not even exist. Orville and Wilbur did not make the        first flight until 1903. The Model T Ford did not appear until 1909.
Yet, by 1947, Chuck Yeager flew the X1 at supersonic speeds. In        1954, the B-52 bomber made its maiden flight. It took only 51 years        to go from a rickety wooden airplane flying at 10 MPH, to a gigantic        aluminum jet-powered Stratofortress carrying 70,000 pounds of bombs        halfway around the world at 550 MPH. In 1958, Pan Am started        non-stop jet flights between New York and Paris in the Boeing 707.        In 1969, Americans set foot on the moon. It is unbelievable what        engineers and corporations can accomplish in 50 or 60 short years.
There were millions of people in 1900 who believed that humans would        never fly. They were completely wrong. However, I don't think anyone        in 1900 could imagine the B-52 happening in 54 years."

This quote is from an interesting paper that depicts a 'present and    future history' within which, by 2050, autonomous humanoid robots have    taken over most of the entry-level jobs of today.  But far from the    Jetsons' vision of a utopia full of enthusiastic perennial vacationers,    the robots have usurped most of the jobs, such as maids and other    cleaning personnel, fast food cooks and clerks, and the many other jobs    that don't require the spark of human creativity.  One result is that    50% of the U.S. workforce is then unemployed.
Marshall makes the economic necessity for businesses of that time to    follow this trend quite clear, similar to how businesses once all gave    up messengers for the telephone, horse-drawn delivery wagons for trucks,    and typewriters for computers -- competitive necessity.  At which point    he uses the quote above to help us understand why this possibility is    FAR from "absurd," even if it seems so from our viewpoint today, "50    years in the past."
   Moore Perspective.
Along the way, Marshall also illuminates some of the results of Moore's    Law, such as through these excerpts:
"A processor in 2002 is 10,000 times faster than a processor in 1982        was. This trend has been in place for decades, and there is nothing        to indicate that it will slow down any time soon. Scientists and        engineers always get around the limitations that threaten Moore's        law by developing new technologies."
"A 10 MEGAbyte hard disk cost about $1,000 in 1982. Today you can        buy a 250 GIGAbyte drive that is twice as fast for $350. Today's        drive is 25,000 times bigger and costs one-third the price of the        1982 model..."
"In the same time period -- 1982 to 2002 -- standard RAM (Random        Access Memory) available in a home machine has gone from 64        KILObytes to 128 MEGAbytes -- it improved by of factor of 2,000."
"What if we simply extrapolate out, taking the idea that every 20        years things improve by a factor of 1,000 or 10,000? What we get is        a machine in 2020 that has a processor running at something like 10        trillion operations per second. It has a TERAbyte of RAM and one or        two PETAbytes of storage space (a petabyte is one quadrillion        bytes)."
"What if we extrapolate ANOTHER 20 years after that, to 2040? A        typical home machine at that point will be 1,000 times faster than        the 2020 machine. Human brains are thought to be able to process at        a rate of approximately one quadrillion operations per second. A CPU        in the 2040 time frame could have the processing power of a human        brain, and it will cost $1,000. It will have a PETAbyte (one        quadrillion bytes) of RAM. It will have one EXAbyte of storage        space. An exabyte is 1,000 quadrillion bytes."
Although none of us have a clear picture of what 2050 will look like,    Marshall's reasoning (he presents additional supporting data in his    very hard to argue with -- consider the well-established history of many    technologies' double-exponential growth, and the just-now-beginning NBIC    Convergence (the coming together, and therefore synergistic growth, of    the previously separate fields of Nanotechnology, Biology & medicine,    Information sciences, and Cognitive sciences)!
(If the POTENTIAL for such changes seems like so much poppycock --    please re-read the first three quoted paragraphs at the beginning of    this article.)
The question, of course, if things develop as Marshall foretells, is how    our society might plan to effectively deal with another 50 years of such    exponential changes.  Especially considering that the dramatically-high    unemployment would be only the very tip of this particular iceberg...

October 22, 2003 This past weekend, United Press International's Mark Benjamin – assisted by Steven Robinson of  the National Gulf War Resource Center, a veteran's advocacy group – broke the story that hundreds of injured Iraq War veterans were stranded in dismal barracks at Ft. Stewart, Ga., while they were awaiting medical care.
"They're being treated like dogs," is how one officer who before the UPI story broke. "There is not a smile on this sector of the post. I have never seen as many sad people in one place in all my life."
The situation described by this officer and by UPI was one where injured National Guard and Army Reserve soldiers were languishing while waiting for military doctors to fully diagnose their injuries and do the paperwork for future medical benefits. The veterans – some with injuries that will become lifelong disabilities – were living in large barracks with double bunk beds and no indoor plumbing. Soldiers who paid $10 day could get a smaller, shared room with air conditioning and a bathroom.
"I've been in [the military] for 30 ? years and never thought the Army would turn on its own like this," said First Sgt. Gerry Mosley, of the National Guard's 296th Transportation Company from Brookhaven, Miss. "I am not  in a case by myself. They are telling you it's going to be four to six months  if you're going through a medical evaluation."
The account given by Mosley and other soldiers at Ft. Stewart is at odds with the support-the-troops rhetoric from top Pentagon and White House officials. Yet it's part of a pattern of lapses in military health policies that have occurred during the course of the Iraq War.
In recent weeks, two separate congressional investigations by the General Accounting Office (GAO-04-158T and GAO-03-1171T) concluded the Army and Air Force largely ignored a 1997 law requiring all soldiers sent to war zones be given extensive pre- and post-deployment medical exams – to avoid the unexplained medical problems that arose after the 1991 Persian Gulf War  that became known as "Gulf War Syndrome."
Moreover, the months-long delays in getting medical care faced by the soldiers at Ft. Stewart are nearly identical to the delays faced by veterans of other wars as they seek care in the Veterans Administration health system. Fully funding the VA is a top priority of veterans' groups, who say the  2004 VA budget pending before Congress is under-funded by $1.8 billion.
"This is about what the administration says versus what they do," said Robinson, who is executive director of the National Gulf War Resource Center.
But following the publication of UPI's story on Friday, Oct. 17, Mosley said the senior officers at Ft. Stewart met with the soldiers quoted in the news account and then started making basic improvements to the living conditions. Over the weekend, partitions were put between toilets and bunk beds, he said. Mosley also was told more doctors will be brought in.
Robinson, who repeated the story on CNN on Monday, Oct. 20, is bringing congressional investigators to Ft. Stewart on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
 The Bigger Picture
Whether the situation at Ft. Stewart is the norm or an anomaly at military bases housing soldiers injured in Iraq is not known. The Pentagon has not commented. Ft. Stewart is only one base where injured troops from Iraq have been sent, according to soldiers and veterans' activists contacted.
It's also hard to determine how many soldiers have been injured in Iraq because, again, the Pentagon has not fully disclosed those numbers. Another UPI report, on Oct. 3, said nearly 4,000 soldiers had been medically evacuated from Iraq for non-combat reasons, quoting the Army Surgeon General's office. Those numbers have not been updated.
Some soldiers say the military has been downplaying these statistics. Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Camilo Mejia of Miami, who was back in the states during the recent two-week furlough, said the military was short of manpower in Iraq and wasn't always sending injured troops to Kuwait or back  to the states for medical care. That was one factor contributing to low morale of troops in Iraq, he said, a trend that was confirmed  in a mid-October poll conducted by Stars and Stripes, a government-published military newspaper.

Meanwhile, soldiers like Sgt. Mosley have been languishing at Ft. Stewart since last spring. Mosley, 48, served in the Army for three years and has been in the reserves for 27 years. He said he was injured when he jumped off a truck that came under Iraqi attack in the first hours of the war. He kept going and was further hurt after diving into a foxhole to avoid more Iraqi fire. Before the war, Mosley said he could run two miles in 17 minutes. Today, he said he can barely walk or sleep for more than 45 minutes at a time. He  got to Ft. Stewart on May 26 and was put in what's called "medical hold."
At first, he lived in a large cement barracks with no air conditioning, where he and 50 other injured soldiers slept in bunk beds. He said he's been paying $10 a day for an air-conditioned room he shares with two other men. Mosley said his medical issues were still unresolved. He said he has waited for weeks to see specialists and doctors, but their diagnoses and resulting treatments have not helped. Mosley also said he's been pressured to sign papers to confirm those diagnoses, which could limit his future veteran's benefits. Mosley said he refused to do so.
Worse yet, Mosley said soldiers like him – from the National Guard and Army Reserves – weren't getting the same attention or treatment as soldiers from the fulltime active-duty military. He finds that double standard galling.
"When the Iraqis started coming in on us, when the bullets started flying, they didn't say I didn't mean to fire on you – you're a reservist," he said. "We're being treated so differently from the active duty troops, it's not funny."

Mosley's story isn't unique. Sgt. Willie Buckles, with 28 years of service, was injured in the same  Iraqi mortar attack as Mosley. "I came back on the fifth of May. I still don't know what my pain is," he said. But Buckles has a good idea why he hasn't gotten the care he needs. "I don't believe they planned for it," he said. "They don't have enough doctors and facilities to take care of them." Buckles believes the Pentagon didn't plan for extensive casualties in Iraq. On the other hand, the Pentagon ignored the one law Congress passed after the military's mishandling of Gulf War Syndrome: a 1997 order (PL105-85) requiring detailed medical records for every soldier sent to war.
Two recent reports by Congress' General Accounting Office concluded the Army and Air Force didn't do that before the Iraq war. Several congressional staffers who work on the issue said they still don't know if the Pentagon was complying with medical records law, even as tens of thousands of new National Guard troops are being sent to Iraq.
Last spring, after coming under congressional criticism for not following the 1997 law, the Pentagon's point man on the issue, Under-Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs William Winkenwerder, announced the Pentagon would expand the questionnaire used by the military for post-deployment screening. What's also notable about the lengthy delays faced by soldiers at Ft. Stewart is that they are approximately the same length as those faced by veterans of other wars in the VA health system. While the injured soldiers at Ft. Stewart are not yet in the VA system, veteran advocates note that the VA has been under-funded for years by the current administration, including its 2004 budget now before Congress. "You used us. Now don't abuse us," was how Woody Powell of Veterans for Peace put it, summing  up the attitude of veterans seeking better government health care.

                        | Here's where to listen to this week's issue!    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quote of the Week.
                                                     >From "Robotic Nation"                                                          by Marshall Brain                       Brought to our attention by reader David Schachter.

   Don't Blink!                   --------------------------------------------------------------------- |

                        |
Beneath The Covers.    Teaching kids (or adults) how to use a PC by teaching them how to use    programs that do word processing, spreadsheets, page layout, etc., can    be very valuable.  The students become productive at those specific    tasks in a reasonable amount of time, and they can then use those skills    to further their educational or career paths.
This is al well and good (and desirable).  BUT -- people so-taught do    not really know anything about computers, or about the technologies that    make them possible!  They are not educated about "computers."  Within    the context of this discussion, while they've learned how to use    specific programs on a PC, they did not learn much of anything about the    underlying "technology."  They've simply learned to use certain tools    that just happen to run on a PC.  They've learned a set of skills.
It's similar to my using a wrench to fix a leaky faucet -- I can use    it effectively as a tool, but I have no knowledge of the metallurgy that    gives my wrench just the right combination of strength, flexibility, and    hardness.  I don't know how to calculate the best overall length vs. jaw    length and balance that makes a "great" wrench.  In fact, I can't even    identify the myriad questions that I would HAVE to ask if I were trying    to "build a better wrench."
This then, is the position in which most average (non-technical) people    find themselves with regard to most elements of technology.  They've    been trained as "users," but not as "thinkers," even though they may    believe that they've been taking "technology courses."  And what a waste    of enormous potential that is.
(Don't get me wrong -- the "user" skills remain very necessary and    valuable, but without being further taught to "peer under the covers,"    to learn to think ACROSS traditional disciplines, then "users" these    students will remain.)
So, how do we educate people in ways that better prepare them to excel    (or survive) in a technological universe that finds itself doubling its    capabilities every 2 or so years, and in which the RATE at which many    technologies do this doubling, itself, continues to accelerate?
This Is One Of Those "Non-Trivial" Problems...
It's a HARD problem, given educational inertia and that, according to    reader Miguel Aznar who is the Executive Director of KnowledgeContext
"...[many teachers are] desperate to make their students perform    on standardized tests (which do NOT cross disciplines)."
Following up on some of our recent discussions in this area at    and at

Miguel has, in fact, been thinking about these issues for a long time.    As an educational professional, he codifies many of these issues into an    educational context.  And as you'll see, he has done far more than just    thinking and codifying:
"Now, I agree wholeheartedly with both you and Sanford Forte.  For a        scare, though, look at how U.S. public schools teach about... |

                        |                               Tiny Cannons.
Having just seen "Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black    Pearl" (a truly excellent and enjoyable movie, to my surprise), I must    have been very suggestive to the word "cannon" when reader Todd Hess    used it.  He reminded me of a recent breakthrough from Motorola that    may, within a few years, have us enjoying movies at home in larger,    flatter, and perhaps better-looking splendor.  And all because of that    tiny, elusive, carbon nanotube.
    Image - carbon nanotubes -
As you might recall, a carbon nanotube is a single carbon molecule with    a hexagonal (chicken wire) structure that has rolled itself into the    form of a perfect hollow tube.  That nanometer-scale tube has more than    a few unexpected properties, such as,
"... [having] one hundred times the tensile strength of steel [at        one-sixth the weight]; thermal conductivity better than all but the        purest diamond; and electrical conductivity similar to copper, but        with the ability to carry much higher currents...."
(Picture and quotes are from            excellent non-technical introduction to the many forms of these            tiny tubes and their potential uses.  (c) 2003 CMP-Cientifica,
Carbon nanotubes can also become a semiconductor, when bent just the    right way.  And, in deference to the pirate movie, it turns out that    they make excellent cannons, firing single electrons straight and true    with great force:
 |

                        |     "They can produce streams of electrons very efficiently (field        emission), which can be used to create light in displays for        televisions or computers, or even in domestic lighting, and they can        enhance the fluorescence of materials they are close to."
   Enter, the "NED."
This "field emission" characteristic, which among other things can be    used to excite individual phosphor sub-pixels on a flat TV-like piece of    glass, is not newly discovered.  But what Motorola has apparently now    is a way to grow huge fields of precisely spaced and oriented carbon  nanotubes in sufficient density, and at a low-enough temperature (so as  not to melt the glass they attach to), to produce a bright, high-density, large  (greater than 50-inch diagonal), thin (one-inch deep) display with relative  ease.  (Such ease hat they expect these displays to be less expensive than    similarly-sized plasma or LCD displays!)  Motorola calls them "Nano Emissive Displays," or NEDs.
"The ability to place Carbon Nanotubes directly on a substrate while        controlling their spacing, size, and length, provides a high quality        image with optimized electron emissions, brightness, color purity        and resolution for flat panel displays."
"For this reason, we believe the market is ripe for a disruptive        technology, such as carbon nanotubes, that provides a CRT quality        image at a cost that is significantly lower than current plasma and        LCD offerings."
   Cheer For The Accidents!
Perhaps most fascinating to me, is that these carbon nanotubes weren't    the result of a massive targeted research project, but were discovered    by accident in 1991 by NEC's Sumio Iijima, who was curious enough to    analyze a "smudge" of black unexpectedly produced as a byproduct of an    experiment.  According to Iijima in a Jan., 2001 interview in JSAP
"It was an accident that suited me well."
Indeed.  Because of his curiosity, it may turn out that he struck the    spark that changes how we build future things -- from vastly smaller and    faster electronic components, to lighter and stronger construction    materials for buildings and bridges and more, even to the "space    elevator" that could dramatically reduce the cost of putting material    (and even tourists!) into orbit!
   Because of an "accident."
Because someone thought to ask "why," instead of just cleaning up.
And because his employer supported his curiosity...
 Again, Don't Blink! |

For almost twenty years, as I've been sharing my research on the    ever-faster-moving and converging technologies that are changing how    we work, live, and play, I've also been working directly with businesses    and organizations, large and small, to help them understand and address    how these changes may affect them, their customers, and their customers'    businesses, through a series of:
       ·    Presentations - Highly engaging, interactive, multimedia,        constantly-updated presentations and keynote speeches to individual        businesses, internal groups, and trade organizations, helping        participants to viscerally understand and appreciate how technology        has brought us to where we are today, and where it's likely to lead        us tomorrow.
       ·    Workshops - Beginning with the presentation described above (to        give all participants a common understanding and insight), the        workshop further engages attendees to explore how this march of        technology might affect their individual businesses and        organizations, and their specific needs.
       ·    One-On-One Consulting - Individualized consulting services,        available via phone or in-person, to help you explore the topics and        trends discussed in The Harrow Technology Report, and related        issues.
   additional information.
questions, to discuss fees, and to schedule a consulting event.  I look    forward to working with you!

Traffic In Your Pocket Redux -- Furthering our discussion on real-time    traffic information     ), Russian reader Kirill Koutcherov shows us that a paging company in  Russia, trying to maintain the revenue it's been losing to cell phones, reinvented itself as a provider of real-time traffic information.
    Image - SmiLink's Moscow traffic monitor -
The display pictured above (not an LCD, but "a mask with the picture and    discrete LEDs under the 'streets.'") shows the overall Moscow area on    the right, plus a zoomed-in area of the city center on the left.  The    hardware costs USD$200, plus USD$12-18 per month.
According to Kirill's knowledge and experience,
"I can suggest it works well - radio coverage for paging services is        developed well, and road information is reliable since it's taken        directly from road police. Using this device you can save a lot of        time, from 15 minutes to hours..."
If you read Russian, you'll find more information at
   Wish For It...
When I first wrote the previous part of this article, I had concluded:
"Of course there's that one more "mile" to go -- standardizing the        wireless digital real-time traffic data so that automotive (and pocket)        GPS receivers can integrate that into their route calculations (in essence,  adding a "fastest route based on traffic"        choice to the typical "shortest route" and "fastest route" choices.)        And make that a worldwide standard, please..."
But that was before I heard from UK reader Colin Jolleys, who proves    that in the Internet/technology world, wish for something and it tends    to appear:
I read/heard with interest the        topic on real-time traffic data being integrated with satellite        navigation systems.  In the UK today this is a reality already.
I have a Renault car that incorporates a badged satellite navigation        system from VDO Dayton.  This system has the ability to receive TMC        (Traffic Message Code) data via the car FM radio (it uses an        extension of the data capability of RDS I think).
These TMC codes are provided in the UK by a company called "Itis        Holdings" which gathers the information from a variety of sources.        On receipt of this information, and provided that you have purchased        a map CD that is TMC ready (this funds the TMC model), my GPS system        puts symbols on the maps to indicate traffic problems, and prompts        with options for me to select alternative routes if I want to avoid        trouble and have a quicker journey.
I hope this is of interest & sorry it doesn't seem to be available        in the US yet!"

Many thanks, Colin.  I've driven in London traffic and I can well    appreciate what a valuable service this could be.  I also suspect that    this would be as-valuable in the U.S.  Is any forward-looking company    that wants to re-invent itself in this new century listening...?  (By    the way, how about also extending rental cars GPSs on both sides of the    pond to be watchful in case "wrong-side-of-the road," or perhaps    inebriated, or just confused drivers mess up and enter the wrong lane --    the GPS could warn him or her LOUDLY!)
Of course, TMS doesn't address the global "standardization" issues that    remain to be solved -- I can use my current U.S. Garmin StreetPilot III    in London, but it would surely be a shame if I couldn't also get the    London traffic and rerouting info!    Another Way.
Finally on this subject, UK reader Gerald Connolly demonstrates that the    UK is quite a bit ahead in offering a wide variety of traffic-related    services.  TrafficMaster's "SmartNAV"    different tack then injecting real-time traffic information into a car's    GPS system.  Instead, SmartNAV maintains a single digital map and    traffic database on their central server.  A subscriber has a small box    in her car that sends its GPS position back to the service, and it also    contains a display to show the resulting guidance map and directions    sent (and continuously updated) by the remote server.
(Think of this like "time sharing," where the centralized server does    most of the work that is displayed on (relatively) inexpensive wireless    "dumb terminals" in the users' cars, as opposed to putting more    expensive computing power and hordes of data into each car.  They've    traded end-user computing power for increased bandwidth utilization.)
Interesting idea.  Yet what I particularly like about the SmartNAV    service is that they go beyond the routing and traffic-avoidance    opportunities.  For example:
       "Safe Speed Option"
"The Smartnav Safe Speed option has been designed to protect your        licence and encourage safer driving. Whether driving to an        unfamiliar destination or making a frequent journey, it's easy to        become preoccupied by other events and to lose concentration        momentarily; this could result in you breaking the law or even        worse, an accident.
The Smartnav Safe Speed option alerts you when you approach zones        monitored by fixed safety cameras, variable safety camera and        multi-camera detectors (also know as Specs).
Two levels of audible warning are provided - one as you approach the        monitored zone (3 beeps) and a second (5 beeps) immediately before        the monitored zone, giving you sufficient time to correct your speed        and alert you to concentrate on the road ahead. If you continue to        drive above the speed limit through the monitored zone, you will        hear continuous beeps until your speed has fallen to below the        specified speed limit."
I've long-suggested the value of incorporating speed-limits for each    road section into GPS databases; SmartNAV goes beyond this, adding the    enforcement areas.  (And yes, I noticed how carefully they worded that    statement, since some people could use this service to flout the law,    which is not a good idea at all.  But such a service could also help the    inattentive or distracted driver to stay within the speed limit.)
Even better, if they were to incorporate the posted speed limits for    each road segment, they could continuously warn drivers if they exceeded    the speed limit for where they're actually traveling by a fixed speed or    percentage, even outside of traffic enforcement zones.  THAT could    really help the unintentional speeders to drive more safely, overall.
This might be a compelling service that could entice me to pay a    reasonable monthly fee.  Wouldn't you? |

                        |   Brain Machine Interfaces Interfaces Program represents a major DSO thrust area that will comprise a multidisciplinary, multipronged approach with far reaching impact. The program will create new technologies for augmenting human performance through the ability to noninvasively access codes in the brain in real time and integrate them into peripheral device or system operations. Focus will be on the following areas: 1. Extraction of neural and force dynamic codes related to patterns of motor or sensory activity required for executing simple to complex motor or sensory activity (e.g., reaching, grasping, manipulating, running, walking, kicking, digging, hearing, seeing, tactile). This will require the exploitation of new interfaces and algorithms for providing useful nonlineartransformation, pattern extraction techniques, and the ability to test these in appropriate models or systems.   2. Determination of necessary force and sensory feedback (positional, postural, visual, acoustic, or other) from a peripheral device or interface that will provide critical inputs required for closed loop control of a working device (robotic appendage or other peripheral control device or system). 3. New methods, processes, and instrumentation for accessing neural codes noninvasively at appropriate spatiotemporal resolution to provide closed loop control of a peripheral device. This could include both fundamental interactions of neural cells, tissue, and brain with energy profiles that could provide noninvasive access to codes (magnetics, light,or other). 4. New materials and device design and fabrication methods that embody compliance and elastic principles, and that capture force dynamics that  integrate with neural control commands. These include the use of dynamic materials and designs into working prototypes. 5. Demonstrations of plasticity from the neural system and from anintegrated working device or system that result in real time control under relevant conditions of force perturbation and cluttered sensoryenvironments from which tasks must be performed (e.g., recognizing and picking up a target and manipulating it). 6. Biomimetic implementation of controllers (with robotics or otherdevices and systems) that integrate neural sensory or motor control integrated with force dynamic and sensory feedback from a working device or system. The first phase of the program may include dynamic control of simple and complex motor or sensory activity directly using neural codes integratedinto a machine, device, or system. Simple actions considered include using a robotic arm or leg to sense a target, reach for it and manipulate it,  throw or kick an object at a target, or recognize a sensory input andresponding to it (visual, acoustic) directly through input/output brain integration. More complex activity may include issues related to force or sensory perturbation in more complex environments. |

1: The 33-Year Question
by Kris Millegan  Special Assignments Team
Thirty-three years ago, President John F. Kennedy was murdered in Dealey
Plaza in Dallas. The meticulously contrived Warren Commission report blamed
"lone nut" Lee Harvey Oswald for the assassination, but the Warren
Commission did not have the courage to dive from the tip of the iceberg into
the icy waters of the conspiracy which led to JFK's death.
After 33 years, a number of researchers have concluded that although a diverse
rogue's gallery of covert operatives, government agencies and power interests
played small roles in the assassination, the unseen hand guiding Kennedy's
murder was a global network of secret societies which fall under the general
description of the Illuminati. According to these researchers, Kennedy's death
was more than a political conspiracy; it was an occult ritual known as the
"Killing of the Divine King" designed as part of an alchemical plan to usher in
a New World Order. This overview examines some of the more prominent
theories of an Illuminati/JFK assassination connection. Be sure to peruse the
Appendices and various hotlinks throughout the article for deeper, more
detailed background information. A collection of JFK weblinks is available
below for further research.

Mind Control, the Illuminati & the JFK Assassination
The Role of Richard Nixon and

The Role of Richard Nixon and George Bush in the Assassination of President
Kennedy
By Paul Kangas
From "The Realist," Summer, 1991
A newly discovered FBI document reveals that, George Bush was directly
involved in the 1963 murder of President John Kennedy. The document places
Bush working with the now-famous CIA agent, Felix Rodriguez, recruiting
right-wing Cuban exiles for the invasion of Cuba. It was Bush's CIA job to
organize the Cuban community in Miami for the invasion. The Cubans were
trained as marksmen by the CIA. Bush at that time lived in Texas. Hopping
from Houston to Miami weekly, Bush spent 1960 and '61 recruiting Cubans in
Miami for the invasion. That is how he met Felix Rodriguez.
You may remember Rodriguez as the Iran-contra CIA agent who received the
first phone call telling the world the CIA plane flown by Gene Hasenfus had
crashed in Nicaragua. As soon as Rodriguez heard that the plane crashed, he
called his long-time CIA supervisor, who was now vice president, George
Bush. Bush denied being in the contra loop, but investigators recently obtained
copies of Oliver North's diary, which documents Bush's role as a CIA
supervisor of the contra supply network.
In 1988, Bush told congress he knew nothing about ihe illegal supply flights
until 1987, yet North 's diary shows Bush at the first planning meeting Aug. 6,
1985. Bush's 'official" log placed him somewhere else. Such double sets of logs
are intended to hide Bush's real role in the CIA; to provide him with "plausible
deniability." The problem is, it fell apart because too many people. Like North
and Rodriguez, have kept records that show Bush's CIA role back to the 1961
invasion of Cuba (Source: The Washington Post, 7-10-90)
That is exactly how evidence was uncovered placing Georgc Bush working
with Felix Rodriguez when JFK was killed. A memo from FBI head J. Edgar
Hoover was found, stating that, "Mr. George Bush of the CIA" had been briefed
on November 23rd, 1963 about the reaction of anti-Castro Cuban exiles in
Miami to the assassination of President Kennedy. (Source: The Nation, 8-1388)
On the day of the assassination, Bush was in Texas, but he denies knowing
exactly where he was. Since he had been the supervisor for the secret Cuban

1963: A Few Connections in Dallas
Gen. Walter Dornberger, Michael and Ruth Paine
When George de Mohrenschildt was busy introducing Lee and Marina to the
Dallas-Ft. Worth White Russian displaced Czarists, he managed to keep the
social level equal with his American contacts. One casual dinner in the
company of Michael and Ruth Paine, and that was enough meeting to set the
Oswald's course. George and Jeane didn't have to meet with them again.
Ruth Paine would provide housing for Marina while Lee went to New Orleans.
A few weeks later, she drove Marina to join Lee. After summer vacation at
Wood's Hole, Mass., Ruth returned and brought Marina to her home in Irving,
Texas, while Lee was on the bus to Mexico with Albert Osborne/John Bowen,
and four other Solidarists from the Russian network. After Kennedy was
murdered, the Dallas police rushed to the Paine's home. From that garage and
elsewhere, via the Paines, came most of the incriminating evidence against
Oswald. The alleged murder weapon never could be proven by the Warren
Commission as ever having come from their garage.
The cropped photo that Life printed with Oswald holding a rifle came from a
box removed from the garage, taken to the police department, then returned
the next day, with nobody present to indicate where it came from...

Nazis
In the United States it was not yetr the United States. It was a green continent, mostly unspoiled ripe for takeover.
First there were MANY slayings of the native people. THEN they filled ships up with slaves from ANOTHER relatively unspoiled continent and putthem to work. THEN they had a revolution against the tyrants they'd left behind in Britain (their cousins, brothers and sisters) and said it was for Liberty, Justice and Freedom. without the sytematic genocide of many people it would have been impossible, including British as well as slaves who died in misery. The United States was thusly born.
SO? Genghis Khan. Alexander the Great. Mass Murderers have for whatever damned reason, been painted
as heroes after their conquests. it always involved blood.
When people say that America is nothing like Nazi Germany was at the height of its infamy I have to laugh: because history shows differently.
But i realise that of course secrets and lies have made a lot of this possible. FORTUNATELTY this is the
21st century: so instead of just intuitively shooting my mouth off i can show you the proof.

yes, it is true horror.
There are racists of every race: they almost always hide their racism under a pretense of righteousness.
People do get to make their own decisions in life no matter who says otherwise. But --
humanity will figure out alternatives to war. We can tell by listening to the arguments of those who say that such is "impossible' --
and then, if we really care, look into the statements of the people who have spoken out against war. Basically it is women and children who suffer the most in ANY armed conflict. Have some respect for women and children before saying that war is inevitable: because you are saying then that the lives of children and women are expendable things: easily replaced by another big push.
think about it! Because there is a man in power today whose grandfather was tried for selling steel and war supplies to the country his country, the United States of American, was fighting against. Prescott bush is his name.
In the American Revolution: famous traitor Benedict Arnold was hanged for treason. Prescott Bush got a cash fine (he was rich: he paid it off) and went on to found the USO and maneuver his son and grandson into...well you've heard of geroge Bush, right?
wake up.
