Mine-sniffing rats
Mine-sniffing rats are the sole focus of Apopo, a Flemish
acronym for "product development geared toward the demining
of antipersonnel mines." The group is the brainchild of Mr.
Weetjens' brother Bart; a college friend, Christophe Cox;
and a University of Antwerp professor, Mic Billet, now Apopo's
chairman.
The three decided in the late 1990's that so-called biosenso
animals with great noses were the future of land-mine
detection, but that there must be creatures better suited for
the task than dogs.
With a grant from the Belgian government, they began hunting
for an animal with a dog's sense of smell, but none of its
drawbacks. They approached Ron Verhagen, the head of the
university's biology department, for help. "And that," Mr.
Weetjens said, "is where rats came along."
Specifically, along came Cricetomys gambianus, also known
as the Gambian and African giant pouched rat. Up to 30
inches long, it thrives in most of sub-Saharan Africa, lives
up to eight years in captivity and is "savage" in the wild,
Mr. Weetjens says, but so docile when bred that some people
keep them as pets.
Each rat gets to sweep a 10-by-10-meter square of land on
which two defused mines or TNT scents have been hidden.
Finding the mine or scent earns a click and a bite of banana
or peanuts. Failure generally earns a second try. Some rats
try to game the system, scratching the earth randomly in hopes
of getting free treats. But the trainers feed them and sound
a click to signal success only when they scratch the right spots.

Mencken and Me: Indiscreet charms of the bourgeoisie
"Scorn is expensive. Perhaps it takes at least two generations of successful businessmen to create a great cynic like Henry Mencken. Though I may be more of a democrat, with a small "d," than Mencken, I think his contempt for democracy was entirely justified. Democracy honors the wisdom of the herd, and the herd has never proven itself worthy of that honor, never to the slightest degree. But to the Rev. Billy C. Wirtzes of the world, it's democracy, not property, that separates them from the serfs in Gogol's "Dead Souls" who are reduced to advocating their own floggings for the greater good of Russia—a level of "slave morality" even lower than those Mencken castigated.
It's a class thing, like so many of the most significant distinctions in this country where we refuse to talk about class. It takes a certain kind of family to incubate a critic, a columnist, a cynic, an iconoclast—someone with the serene self-confidence to assert in public that he is right and the herd, however vast or menacing, is not only wrong but ridiculous. I know what kind of family it takes because I grew up in one, and so, I submit, did Mencken. His grandfather, Burkhardt Mencken, he remembered as "generally confident and even somewhat cocky" and biographer Fred Hobson adds that Burkhardt showed "an independent spirit from the beginning, as well as a certain defiance of civil authority."

Former German Defense Minister Confirms CIA
Involvement in 9/11: Andreas Von Buelow
The Home Run System Remote Control of Passenger Aircraft
According to British aeronautical engineer Joe Vialls, the flight control computers of
all 757s and 767s have a feature than enables them to be remotely controlled, for the
purpose of aborting hijackings. This was also suggested by a former German secretary
of defense, Von Buelow. The technology required for such systems has existed for
decades. If such systems were operative on 9-11, they should have been used to take
control of and land the hijacked jets.
Former German Minister Von Buelow Already Knew About Remote Control
In his interview with the German daily "Tagesspiegel" on January 13th,
former German Secretary of Defence Andreas Von Buelow made the

An article "Why Did the World Trade Center Collapse?—Simple Analysis" by Zdenek P. Bazant and Yong Zhou appeared in the on-line
version of Journal of Engineering Mechanics ASCE, with the first version dated 9/13/01 and revisions dated 9/22/01 and 9/28/01.
With such rapid publication after 9/11, it is evident that the paper must have been rushed, with no time for full peer review. Let's take
a critical look at this paper. The basic theory of Bazant & Zhou is explained as follows, and sketched in their Fig. 1:

"Bulky, expensive crystalline silicon cells will soon be obsolete"
©2004 Jerry Russell 3/12/04
"Solar and Wind Energy are Viabl Alternatives
Giant wind turbines have already made a massive contribution to Europe's energy
independence. Wind energy costs can be as low as three cents a kilowatt hour --
that's a bit cheaper than natural gas, oil or nuclear power plants.
Huge strides are being made in solar photovoltaic research. Bulky, expensive
crystalline silicon cells will soon be obsolete.
The future belongs to artificial photosynthesis technology, based in thin-film
plastics and built with nanotechnology. This is not science fiction, it is a Venture Capital Reality.
pursuing this technology, and in Silicon Valley, the founders of Google are
major funding partners of Nanosolar. When these new solar panels are
available on the market, solar power will be cheaper than coal.
Electricity on the grid can't be used to power automobiles directly, but it can be
used to make hydrogen, and hydrogen can easily be stored as lithium hydride,
and burned directly in internal-combustion engines.
Critics of the hydrogen technology complain about expensive cryogenic storage, and unreliable fuel-cell technology --
but they don't tell you about these simple alternatives that work.
Unless this technology can be suppressed by the entrenched elitist oil interests
of Skull & Bones and the CIA, the "Fossil Fuel" industry will soon live up to its
name -- it will be extinct.
The War in Iraq is not about preserving the American Way of Life in an age of
scarcity, and the crimes of September 11 (if indeed it was an "inside job") will
not in any way contribute to maintaining a high standard of living for the American
people. Americans are not silent benefactors or partners in the theft of Iraqi oil.
The only beneficiaries are the likes of Halliburton, Dynergy, Carlysle Group and
the family fortunes of the Bushes, Cheneys and Bin Ladens.

Biomimicry –sometimes called Bionics or Biomimetics - is a scientific and technical discipline finding inspiration in
biological systems to define new engineering solutions. It is a multi-disciplinary subject involving a wide diversity of
other domains like electronics, informatics, medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and many others.
This discipline has already shown the way to number of innovations and improvements in space engineering.
After billion of years of evolution nature has developed materials and structures with attractive strength and weight
characteristics. Scientists and engineers realised that stiffened with phenolic resin honeycomb panels would be
strong enough to be used in aircraft construction. From an aircraft to a spacecraft the step was in this case easy to
make. Satellite use honeycomb panels having the advantage that, at a fraction of the weight, offer the same or even
better strength and stiffness as an equal sized panel of solid metal.

Actuation and Muscles - Electro Active Polymers and Ceramics (EAPs/EACs)
Electroactive polymers and ceramics exhibit an electro-mechanical response (i.e. undergo deformation)
when a voltage is applied across them, enabling their use as actuation devices. Since the beginning of the
1990s the development of a series of new EAP materials that can induce large strains has led to a review
of their possible application as artificial muscles. EACs are more suited to smaller deformation applications
making them more suitable for applications requiring larger deformations. Furthermore, EAPs have
demonstrated high strain (in excess of many muscles), high efficiency and energy density, fast reponse, good controllability and impedance-selection and modulation, and are superior to SMAs in spectral response, lower density and resilience. EAPs can be divided in two categories.
Electronic EAPs - polymer that change shape or dimensions due to migration of electrons in response
to electric field. They have the disadvantage of requiring very high voltage (in the order of thousands of
volts) to work.
· Ionic EAPs - polymer that change shape or dimensions due to migration of ions in response to electric
field requiring 1 to 3V and miliampere currents, but are slower than the electronic EAPs. Additionally, they
must be kept wet and it is difficult to maintain dc-induced displacements (except for conductive polymers).
Electro-active polymers (EAPs) include ion-exchange membranes, gel polymers, perfluorinated sulfonic
polymers, self-assembled mono-layered polymers, electrostrictives and piezoelectrics.
In addition to EAPs there exist nonoelectrically (mechanically) activated polymers, that exhibit a volume
or shape change in response to a perturbation of the balance between repulsive and attractive intermolecular forces. The competition between these forces can be controlled by small changes in parameters such as composition of a solvent or gel, temperature, pH etc. These types of polymers
include chemically , magnetically and light activated shape memory polymers, and inflatable structures,
the most well known being the McKibben artificial muscle. The McKibben actuator was originally developed
in the 1950’s as an orthotic appliance for polio patients by the physicist, J. L. McKibben [Klute et al., 1999].
It is powered by compressed gas, which is fed into an actuator composed of an inflatable bladder sheathed
with a double helical weave. When the gas enters, the bladder increases in volume, expanding radially and contracting along it’s length. Figure ?? shows the basic actuation character of the McKibben artificial muscle
and a generic electroactive polymer.

Mind Switch: brain wave activation of electronic devices // thanks *
'People with profound disabilities resulting from quadriplegia,
massive stroke, cerebral palsy or numerous other medical conditions
will be able to regain a degree of independence following the
development of the Mind Switch.' ... 'Researchers at the University of
Technology Sydney have discovered a way to activate electronic devices
using nothing more than brain waves. The Mind Switch is unique in that
it doesn't need biofeedback control. The switch relies on the increase
in alpha waves which occurs when the eyes are closed. Sensors in a cap
worn by the person detect this increase (or decrease when the eyes are
opened again) and send radio-frequency signals to a microprocessor.
The appliance needing to be adjusted is selected from a menu displayed
by the computer, and then controlled as required. The great advantage
with the Mind Switch is that it can be operated with very little training.
Once a person is familiar with the technology, switching the
television, lights or other electrical device on or off becomes quick
and easy.' ... 'Mind Switch is a platform technology which could be
used in a number of other applications....'
[&] The Mind Switch: Brain signals and control of electrical devices
'Alpha electroencephalographic activity remains poorly understood.
While it has been used in attempts to control devices like computers,
to date, success has been limited. Our research has resulted in an
advance in this area. We have shown participants can achieve rapid,
reliable and remote control of an electrical device using alpha wave
activity associated with reduced visual input.'

Looking Through The Looking Glass At 911
- By Stephen Simac
It's been a year since the 9/11 attacks on America and the public
still has very little factual information about what happened that
day or the events leading up to it. Verifiable details have been
buried under "national security" secrecy as deeply as the victims
of the Twin Towers under the rubble and dust of the collapsed World Trade Center (WTC).

"The former German Minister of Technology has estimated
that up to $15 billion of insider trading occurred before 9/11.

those companies. They also bought heavily in US. Treasury

DeutscheBank in Germany had the most connections to insider
trading including placing the short selling of puts on United and
American Airlines used by the hijackers and re-insurance groups
covering the Trade Center.
DeutscheBank is still keeping their anonymous investors
names secret, through special rules called portage.
In fact our government investigation has not even
asked them for this information.
Their bank in Hamburg held three of the named
hijackers bank accounts.
One of DeutscheBank's senior investment agents was
convicted of money laundering and arms trading for
Pakistani and Egyptians just weeks before 9/11.
Their global private banking chief resigned on Sept. 12.
The German bank probably has no worries about
being investigated by the SEC.
They hired away its chief of enforcement and
investigation only 20 days after the attacks.
They don't have much to worry from the congressional
joint committee either; the former head of the banking

Background: The chemical warfare agent 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB, BZ) is an anticholinergic
agent that affects both the peripheral and central nervous systems (CNS). It is one of the most potent
anticholinergic psychomimetics known, with only small doses necessary to produce incapacitation. It is
classified as a hallucinogenic chemical warfare agent. QNB usually is disseminated as an aerosol, and
the primary route of absorption is through the respiratory system. Absorption also can occur through
the skin or gastrointestinal tract. It is odorless. QNB's pharmacologic activity is similar to other
anticholinergic drugs (eg, atropine) but with a much longer duration of action.
Pathophysiology: QNB acts by competitively inhibiting muscarinic receptors. Muscarinic receptors
primarily are associated with the parasympathetic nervous system, which innervates numerous organ
systems, including the eye, heart, respiratory system, skin, gastrointestinal tract, and bladder. Sweat
glands, innervated by the sympathetic nervous system, also are modulated by muscarinic receptors. The
ICt50 (concentration in air of QNB necessary to incapacitate 50% of exposed and unprotected
individuals through inhalation during a set time) has been reported to be 100 mg?min/m3. Effects of
QNB by any route of exposure are slow in onset and long in duration. The onset of action is
approximately 1 hour, with peak effects occurring 8 hours postexposure. Symptoms gradually subside
over 2-4 days. Most of the QNB that enters the body is excreted by the kidneys, making urine the
choice for detection.
Frequency:
In the US: Use of QNB against the U.S. has never been reported. Currently, the U.S. government is
funding numerous programs to prepare the nation for potential chemical terrorist attacks against
citizens and the military.
Internationally: Use of QNB has been suggested in a number of international conflicts. In January
1992, soldiers in Mozambique experienced an explosion above their troop formation. Subsequent
symptoms resembled those expected from QNB. In July 1995, approximately 15,000 people attempted
to walk from the enclave of Srebrenica to the free territory in Bosnia. Many experienced hallucinations
during their march that were suspected to be secondary to QNB.
Mortality/Morbidity: The LCt50 of QNB is reportedly 200,000 mg?min/m3. This means, for example,

By Jim Rarey
Decmber 29, 2002
A cruel sham is being perpetrated on the American public and especially on the families of the
victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers and the
Pentagon. One of the expectations of the public is that the Commission established to investigate
the attacks will find out what the government (in particular intelligence agencies) knew prior to the
attacks. However, both the restrictions on the Commission and the composition of its members are
designed to prevent just that.
The Commission was established by the 2003 Intelligence Authorization Act (H.R. 4628) to (1)
conduct an investigation, (2) identify, review and evaluate lessons learned, and (3) issue a report
to the President and Congress containing findings, conclusions and recommendations. While the
first part of Section 604 of the Act defining the Commission's functions appears to give it a broad
mandate of areas for investigation (including intelligence agencies), a following provision limits its
inquiry into the 'intelligence community' to areas not covered by the 'Joint Inquiry' of Congressiona
l Intelligence Committees unless there is new information not reviewed by the congressional
investigation.
Commission members and staff will be required to have appropriate security clearances before they
are given access to classified information. This probably means that any final report to the public will
be 'sanitized' of classified information, as is the report of the congressional 'Joint Inquiry.' In other
words, any meaningful information the Commission might find (despite the restrictions on it) will not
be made public.
Committee staff members are considered government employees and are subject to severe penalties
for leaking classified information.
Some public hearings may be held but obviously will not deal with classified information. Each agency
furnishing information to the Commission establishes its own classifications. The Commission can
issue subpoenas for information or compelling testimony but only if at least six of the ten members
approve or both the chairman and vice chairman approve.
If a subpoena is ignored, a U.S. District Court can issue an order to comply and if still ignored,
cite the person or persons for contempt. Alternatively, by majority vote the commission can issue
a non-binding request to a U.S. Attorney to bring the matter before a grand jury. U.S. Attorneys
report to the Attorney General, or a subordinate, in the Department of Justice. The Commission
is required to issue its final report eighteen months after the authorizing legislation went into effect.
If the limited scope of the commission is not enough, the membership of the commission virtually
guarantees that nothing meaningful will emerge. In this writers opinion there are three general
categories of persons who should have been excluded from the commission. The first is anyone
who is a member of an organization that advocates abdicating U.S. sovereignty in favor of
governance by a regional or world body. The premier organization pushing that concept for the last
eight decades is the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). Members of the CFR hold a significant
number of high-level government positions. A second category would be anyone who has had
involvement with the 'intelligence community.' This would include members of congress who have
been on intelligence committees as well as some private sector members of advisory boards. The
rationale is that those persons likely have either been co-opted or have become inured to accepting
assertions of intelligence agencies at face value.
The third criterion, which would mostly apply to government officials and members of congress, is
anyone who participated in a cover-up of illegal activity related to organizations or groups involved
in terrorism or the related activities of drug distribution and money laundering.
COMMISSION MEMBERS
Thomas Kean
Then let's begin with the chairman of the commission Thomas Kean, former New Jersey Governor
and President of Drew University. When Kean was appointed to replace severely conflicted Henry
Kissinger, he asserted his only constituency was the students at Drew.
Well, it turns out that is not exactly true. Kean sits on the Board of Directors of Amerada Hess, one
of the world's leading independent oil and gas companies. The company is coupled with Delta Oil,
a Saudi Arabia company in a joint venture called Delta-Hess. Delta-Hess in turn is a partner in
Azerbaijan with a consortium developing Caspian Sea oil resources.
Delta Oil is owned by the two Saudi families of Khalid bin Mahfouz and Mohammed Hussein al
Amoudi. Both are alleged to be major financial backers of Osama bin Laden and have been named
in a lawsuit by families and survivors of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Bin Mahfouz is Osama's brother-in
-law. His sister married bin Laden.
Delta-Hess owns 20% of the Azerbaijan consortium. SOCOL, the state owned Oil Company has 50%
and Frontera owns the remaining 30%. Frontera is headed by Bill White who was Deputy Secretary of
Energy in the first Clinton administration and the architect of Azerbaijans first Caspian Sea offshore
gas and oil consortium. Familiar names among its Board of Directors and advisors include Lloyd
Bentsen, former Senator and Treasury Secretary and John Deutch, former Director of the CIA.
Kean also is co-chairman of Homeland Security Project, which had significant input into the drafting
of the Office of Homeland Security legislation. The long-time member of the CFR also forgot to mention
his role as general partner in Quad Ventures LLC. Quad is a limited partnership operating in the $815
billion education industry whose partners include; Citigroup, J.P. Morgan Chase, Merrill Lynch
Community Development, Wells Fargo bank and insurance giants Prudential Financial and Wachovia.
Top officials in most of those companies are also CFR members. Both Citigroup and Morgan Chase
are deeply involved in the Enron scandal. Citigroup received a slap on the wrist when found to have
laundered hundreds of millions of dollars in drug money which some suspect helped fund terrorism.
Lee Hamilton
Commission vice chairman and former congressman Lee Hamilton was appointed to replace former
senate majority leader George Mitchell (CFR), who like Kissinger declined to disclose potential
conflicts of interest and resigned. Hamilton, a CFR member since at least 1988, was chairman of
the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Select Intelligence Committee.
In 1987, House Speaker Jim Wright (who later resigned in disgrace) appointed Hamilton to chair a
committee investigating the Iran/Contra affair. When a question was raised about CIA/Contra drug
smuggling, the response was release by Hamilton of a cursory review that concluded there was no
truth to the charges. The CIA recently released a report (that received almost no publicity) admitting
the drug connection. Jamie Gorelick
Considered one of the fifty most powerful women in the country, CFR member Jamie Gorelick is
currently vice-chair of the giant mortgage lender and insurer Fannie Mae. From March 1994 until
she joined Fannie Mae in May 1997 she was Deputy Attorney General, the number two spot in
Janet Renos Department of Justice.
In May 1995, the Intelligence Community Law Enforcement Policy Board was established to meet
quarterly and discuss mutual concerns of the Attorney General and Director of Central Intelligence.
The board was co-chaired by Gorelick and DCI George Tenet. Other members included all of the
law enforcement agencies, the Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research and the
Defense Department General Counsel.
This is the same time frame (spring of 1995) in which the Philippine government
apprised the FBI, CIA and State Department of Project Bojinka an Islamic terrorist
plot which included hijacking commercial airlines planes and flying them into the Pentagon, World Trade Center towers and, several other buildings.
The BCCI scandal involved a number of powerful individuals. Clark Clifford and Robert Altman were
the top two officers in First American, the new name given Financial General Bankshares when it
was taken over by BCCI (known as the Bank of Crooks and Criminals International in the corridors
of Washington) with the help of the Jackson Stephens/Lippo Worthen Bank and the Rose Law Firm.
First American is said to have been using the notorious PROMIS software. When BCCI and First
American were exposed, the legal defense team for Clifford and Altman attracted a bevy of well-
known names including Robert Fiske (later the first 'independent counsel' investigating Whitewater
and Vince Foster's 'suicide'), Robert Bennett (later attorney for Bill Clinton), and Jamie Gorelick.
In a somewhat related case in 1978, Financial General Bankshares sued BCCI, two Jackson
Stephens' companies (one was Systematics) and a number of individuals. Two of the attorneys
representing Systematics in the controversy over PROMIS software were Webster Hubbell and
Hillary Rodham.
In 1998, while at Fannie Mae, Gorelick served on Clintons Central Intelligence National Security
Advisory Panel as well as the President's Review of Intelligence.
Richard Ben-Veniste
Ben-Veniste is a high-visibility Washington attorney and Democrat power broker. He was Democrat
counsel to the Senate Whitewater investigation where he blocked inquiries about Webster Hubbell's
hiring by the Lippo group and others administered by Truman Arnold.
According to investigative journalist Daniel Hopsicker, Ben-Veniste then turned around
and defended Arnold (the man he was supposed to be investigating) before Ken Starr's
Whitewater grand jury, for which he was roundly criticized. Hopsicker also reveals that
Arnold had furnished a $2 million airplane to his friend Wally Hilliard for $1. Hilliard,
Hopsicker says, owned the Flight school in Venice, Florida where four of the Islamic
terrorist pilots were trained that flew the suicide missions on 9/11.
Another of Ben-Venistes clients was Barry Seal, the drug running CIA asset of Iran/Contra and
Mena, Arkansas notoriety. In fact, Hopsicker relates Ben-Veniste told the Wall Street Journal,
"I did my part by launching him (Seal) into the arms of Vice President Bush who embraced him
as an undercover operative."
Fred Fielding
Fielding is another one who has been around the centers of power for a while on the Republican
side. In the Nixon administration he was a deputy counsel working under John Dean. In the
Watergate scandal he helped his boss (Dean) handle Howard Hunt's safe full of documents.
They wore rubber gloves so as not to leave fingerprints. Fielding was not one of the twenty or so
Nixon associates (including John Dean)
that went to jail over their involvement. Later Fielding served as White House Counsel to President
Reagan.
More recently he was at least partly responsible for getting George W. Bush's political mentor
Karl Rove in hot water over failure to divest his stock in Intel Corporation valued at over $100,000.
Fielding advised Rove, who was planning to divest all of his stock, to hold onto it until a
'government certificate of divestiture' could be obtained. The certificate would have allowed
deferral of capital gains taxes on stock sold.
While he still held the stock, Rove met with Intel executives and Vice President Chaney at which
a proposed merger with a Dutch company was discussed. This was a breech of administration
ethics rules.
Fielding served on the Bush transition team in early 2001. According to Clay Johnson, Director of
Presidential Personnel and Deputy Chief of Staff, the Vice President asked Fred Fielding, who
had been President Reagan's counsel, to come in and he volunteered to--as soon as we had a
Cabinet Secretary-to-be, he would sit down with that person and they'd have a nice little chat for an
hour or two. And then Fred would tell us whether he was confident that there were no clearance
problems or not. If there was something that he thought might be problematic, he would explore
it further, and maybe they had to go get some information, whatever. Johnson said the process now
takes sixty days.
Jim Thompson
Jim Thompson was the longest serving governor in Illinois history completing four terms in office
leaving in 1991. He is currently chairman of the large Chicago-based law firm Winston and Strawn.
While he was governor, sensational charges were leveled against him and the law firm
by Chicago author and investigator Sherman Skolnick.
Skolnick claimed that the First National Bank of Chicago had loaned (Communist) China
billions of dollars to be repaid in gold. When China defaulted on the gold payments,
according to Skolnick, the CIA and bank arranged for massive amounts of high purity
heroin to be smuggled into the U.S. in lieu of the gold payments. Skolnick alleged
shipments came in through Joliet, just south of Chicago, and were supervised by
Thompson and the Winston and Strawn law firm. As with most claims of CIA involvement
in illegal drugs, nothing came of the allegations.
Thompson got caught in the middle of a messy political battle between outgoing Governor George
Ryan and Attorney General Jim Ryan, both Republicans. Ryan was running against Democrat Rod Blagojevich, the victor and incoming governor. At the same time AG Ryan was suing Governor
George Ryan over the pardoning of death row inmates.
George Ryan hired former governor Jim Thompson to defend against the lawsuit. Blagojevich had
railed in his campaign against the 26 years of Republican corruption and mismanagement. That
included 12 of the years when Thompson was governor. To the astonishment of practically everyone
, Blagojevich appointed Thompson to lead his transition team.
John Lehman
John Lehman is an investment banker who has served in a number of government positions including
as Secretary of the Navy from 1981 to 1987 under President Reagan. His first government job was
as special counsel and senior staff member to Henry Kissinger on the National Security Council in
the Nixon administration. Lehman currently serves on several boards of directors including those of
Ball Corporation, as chairman of OAO Technology Solutions, Inc. and his own J.F. Lehman & Company.
He is a former chairman of Sperry Marine and investment banker with Paine Webber. Lehman served
25 years as a naval aviator in the selected reserves.
Slade Gorton
Slade Gorton is a former senator from the State of Washington. After he lost his reelection bid
in 2000, he joined the Seattle Law firm of Preston, Gates & Ellis, which specializes in environmenta
l issues. If jury selection rules were being used, Gorton would probably be dismissed from
consideration for the commission for cause. Two days after the 9/11 attacks he told a public-television
audience there was nothing government intelligence officials could have done to thwart the attack,
according to the Seattle Times. The Times quotes Gorton as saying, I doubt we can expect to get
too much inside information no matter what we do. Gorton served two years on the Senate Intelligence
Committee. He says that experience and his personal friendship with Trent Lott were responsible for
his appointment by Lott.

Tim Roemer
Tim Roemer is a moderate Democrat congressman (at least compared to the Democrat leadership)
who is retiring from Congress at the end of this year. He was one of the prime movers in the House
championing creation of the Independent Commission. He is credited with bringing the organization
representing survivors and families of victims of the 9/11 attacks into the mix of support for the
commission. Roemer is a member of the House Intelligence Committee.
Max Cleland
Max Cleland is a one-term Senator from Georgia who lost his reelection bid this year in a close
contest. He is a triple amputee from wounds received in Vietnam. At the age of 28, Cleland was the
youngest person and first Vietnam veteran elected to the Georgia State Senate. In 1977, he became
the youngest ever head of the Veterans' Administration when appointed by President Jimmy Carter.
In 1982 Cleland became the youngest person elected as Georgia Secretary of State. He resigned
that position in 1996 to run for the seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Senator Sam Nunn. He was
sworn in as a U.S. Senator in 1997. Barring (intentional) leaks, we will have to wait another 17 months
to see what the product of the commission will be. By that time the publics attention will undoubtedly
be focused on other things.

November 7, 2001
Yesterday President Bush told the American public that Osama bin Laden is trying to acquire
nuclear weapons. He assured us there is no indication that bin Laden has been successful
yet and vowed the U.S. would not wait until he had such weapons to act.
Some analysts (and this writer) see yesterday’s warning as laying the groundwork for future
revelations (like next week?) that bin Laden has actually acquired nuclear weapons and
intends to use them. This would justify a preemptive strike by the U.S. with tactical nuclear
weapons already in place (according to a Debka file intelligence report last month).
Credible information has been received from two sources (India and Israel) that bin Laden
has purchased 20 or more of the "suitcase nukes" that were delivered to the KGB during
the cold war for terrorist purposes.
According to both sources, the weapons were bought for $30 million in cash and two tons of
Afghan heroin with a street value of $700 million. The transaction was said to have been
brokered through bin Laden’s associates in Chechnya.
The Israel Report (for Sept./Oct. 1999) claims the information comes from intelligence sources
in moderate Arab regimes. The New Delhi based Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies
(IPCS) gives even more specific information divulging the two locations where the suitcase
nukes are stored (in tunnels and caves near Khowst and Kandahar in Afghanistan).
These intelligence reports as well as similar information in a recent book by Yossef Bodansky corroborate the 1998 testimony of former Russian security chief, Alexander Lebed, on KGB
suitcase nukes before a congressional committee. Bodansky is head of the Congressional
Task Force on Non-conventional Terrorism.
The Israel Report also points out that U.S. nuclear policy, as spelled out in a Joint Chiefs of
Staff publication (Doctrine for Joint Theater Nuclear Operation) identifies "likely targets" for
U. S. nuclear weapons to include "non-state actors" i.e. terrorist organizations, that possess
weapons of mass destruction (WMD’s).
The report quotes an unnamed Pentagon source as saying the nuclear strikes would be
limited to situations where, "the U.S., or allies or our forces have been attacked with
chemical or biological weapons." Isn’t that exactly what the anthrax attacks have been
called?
Since this information has been available for at least two years, the question is,
when will the government level with the American people about its knowledge
and intentions. Yesterday’s stark warning appears to be the start of the process
for justification of U.S. use of tactical nukes.

Politics Diebold Voting Machine Owner Committed To Give Votes To Bush in 2004

Published on Thursday, August 28, 2003 by the Cleveland Plain Dealer
From the Sept. 16, 2003, edition of The Plain Dealer
By Julie Carr Smyth, Plain Dealer Bureau
An Ohio voting-machine executive pummeled with national criticism for his close ties to the Bush re-election
campaign said yesterday he wants to make amends. Walden O'Dell, chief executive of North Canton-based
Diebold Inc., confirmed in an interview with Plain Dealer editors that he has been a top fund-raiser for the
Republican president, but said he intends to lower his political profile and "try to be more sensitive" in light
of the national criticism he has faced.
"I'm not doing anything wrong or complicated, but it obviously did leave me open to the criticism I've received,
" he said.
"I've taken it personally; it's very painful, it may have injured our company, and I feel really badly about that."
In an invitation to a Republican fund-raiser at his suburban Columbus mansion, O'Dell said he was"committed
to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes for the president next year."
The letter closely followed a visit by O'Dell to a fund-raising powwow at Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch for six-
figure fund-raisers known as "Pioneers and Rangers."
He said he regrets the wording in the letter…

Guns by Don Wilde, Unknown News March 31, 2004

Tell me something, dear reader: Would you pick up a gun and rob someone in order to make
more money? No?
You are doing just that, you know, whenever you vote for congressleeches and other political
animals who promise to 'guarantee a living wage' or 'entitle' you to pill benefits and other things
you 'deserve', or to 'guarantee jobs for Americans'. Just because you do not pull the trigger
does not absolve you of the responsibility for the act! You are committing murder, and, in a
moment, I'll explain why I call it that.

Silver Bullet:
Depleted Uranium
|
|
|
|
It's the new wonder weapon the Pentagon calls a "silver bullet."
What is depleted uranium? Depleted uranium is still uranium.
There are three types of uranium, U238, U234 and U235. Uranium
234 and 235 are fissionable material, the kind used in bombs.
Depleted uranium is what is left over when the U234 and U235 is
removed. The remaining U238 is still highly radioactive.
Depleted uranium shell A DU round is made from the leftover U238.
The killing punch comes from the solid depleted uranium metal rod in
the shell. A 120 mm tank round contains about 4000 grams or 10
pounds of solid DU.
DU shell hits A DU rod is very dense. At high speed, it slices
through tanks like a hot knife through butter. It burns on impact,
creating flying bits and dust that are toxic and radioactive with a half-
life of 4.2 billion years.
|
Several Army studies in recent years have concluded that the low-level radiation emitted when shells containing DU explode poses no significant dangers. But some independent scientists and a few of the Army's own reports indicate otherwise.' [and] GIs tested for depleted uranium exposure <http://salon.com/news/wire/2004/04/05/uranium/> 'Of nine members of the unit examined by a doctor at the request of the New York Daily News, four had "almost certainly" inhaled radioactive dust from spent U.S. artillery shells containing depleted uranium, the newspaper reported Monday.' ... 'Depleted uranium, which is left over from the process of enriching uranium for use as nuclear fuel, is an extremely dense material that the U.S. and British militaries use for tank armor and armor-piercing weapons. It is far less radioactive than natural uranium.'

NIRS: 1999 Radioactive Metal Recycling ALERT public comment deadline 7/5/99
CMEP: Rad Metal 2/98 Update
Public Citizen's Critical Mass Energy Project
Hello All:
We are happy to report that the US Environmental Protection Agency received just over 150 letters in response to their proposal to allow
the reuse of radioactive metal for consumer products. Only one or two of those comments were from companies. The majority of the letters
told EPA that consumers do not want any radioactivity in their products. This is an amazing show of our cohesiveness on this issue--
considering we only had 3 very busy holiday months to organize. Way to go!
EPA is in the process of analyzing the letters and will determine if they will go
forward with a formal rulemaking process within two months.
EPA has admitted that the number of negative comments will influence this decision.
Furthermore EPA is still taking comments despite the formal closure of the comment period on January 31 1998.
Therefore we should not let up on our pressure to prevent the release of this harmful metal into the public realm.
Keep up the excellent work!

===========================================================
And then there were four
Google is one of about four search engines that matter. There are many more than four engines, but
only about four have the technology to crawl much of the web on a regular basis. Google and Alltheweb
do the best crawling. As of July 2003, Yahoo owned Overture, Alltheweb, AltaVista, and Inktomi, and
finally dumped Google in February 2004. Everything needed to turn Yahoo into a major search engine
and pay-for-inclusion ad agency, at a level that can compete with Google, is under Yahoo's roof. Early
evidence suggests that Yahoo will shoot themselves in the foot with all of this firepower -- their desire to
monetize everything appears to be high on the agenda. Google, on the other hand, has been selling
out only recently, and still shows some "pure search" residue from its early roots.
Even Microsoft, which is busy developing its own engine, is currently squeezed between the advertising
engine of Overture and the search engine Inktomi -- both of which are Yahoo property. Microsoft might
like to buy Google as a way out, but Google is not for sale. Even if it were, there might be antitrust
problems that prevent such an acquisition.
Just as Microsoft was late to recognize the importance of the Internet, they are once again
unprepared to take on Yahoo and Google. In 2003 Microsoft began experimenting with their own
crawler at a very low level. Good search engines need many months of practice before they can crawl
the web effectively, and order the results so that searchers perceive them to be relevant. Some observers doubt that Microsoft has the coordination to achieve through in-house technical development,
what they cannot achieve through acquisition and market manipulation. Even though they have
announced that they are pouring resources into search engine development, this time it will take more
than talk.
That gives us Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft. The last one worth watching is Teoma/AskJeeves.
Their search technology is good, and they seem serious about expanding their crawl. It remains to
be seen how deeply and consistently they will be able to crawl websites with thousands of pages.
Google is easily top dog. They provide about 75 percent of the external referrals for most websites.
If you count Google's partners as part of the mix (particularly Yahoo and AOL), this figure is closer to
85 percent. There is no point in putting up a website apart from Google. It's do or die with Google. If
we're all very lucky, one of the other three will offer some competition within a year or two. If we're not
lucky, we will be uploading our websites to Google's servers by then, much like the bloggers do at
blogger.com (which was bought by Google in 2003). It would mean the end of the web as we know it.
It is worthwhile to understand the pressures that the average, independent webmaster is under. And
given that Google is so dominant, it's important to understand the pressures that are being brought to
bear on Google, Inc. It does not take too much imagination to recognize that there's a struggle going
on for the soul of the web, and the focal point of this struggle is Google itself.
At one level, it's a struggle for advertising revenue. The pundits look at only this level, and are unanimous that the only advertising model on the web with any sort of future is one where little ads
appear after being triggered by keyword searches, or by the non-ad content of a web page. For example, a search for Google Watch may show some ads on the right side of the screen for wrist
watches. While the technique doesn't work for this example, often it serves its purpose. There is only
so much pixeled real estate that the average user can be expected to survey for a given search.
Today up to half of each screen is dedicated to paid ads on Google, as compared to the ad-free
original Google. Everyone wants a piece of this new wave in web advertising, and Google is making
a lot of money.
Unfortunately, early evidence suggests that Yahoo is less interested in pure search algorithms, than
in acquiring market share in a pay-for-placement and/or pay-for-inclusion revenue stream. The same
may be true for Microsoft. Even Google, dazzled by the sudden income from advertising, must be
wondering why they go to all that trouble and expense to crawl the noncommercial sector. Those public-
sector sites, such as the org, edu and gov domains, do not provide direct income, even though the web
would be unattractive without them. All the excitement over a revived online ad market, pushed by
pundits hoping for another dot-com gold rush, is beginning to look like the days when AltaVista
ecided that portals were the Next Big Thing. That notion caused AltaVista to lose interest in improving
their crawling and searching -- which is how Google succeeded in the first place.
There has been almost no interest in establishing search engines that specialize in public-sector
websites. Where is the Library of Congress? Where are the millions of dollars doled out by the Ford Foundation? How about the United Nations? Why can't some enlightened European entity pick up the
slack? Everyone is asleep, while the Internet is getting spammed to death.
At another level, it's a struggle over who will have the predominant influence over the massive
amounts of user data that Google collects. In the past, discussions about privacy issues and the web
have been about consumer protection. That continues to be of interest, but since 9/11 there is a new threat to privacy -- the federal government. Google has not shown any inclination to declare for the
rights of its users across the globe, as opposed to the rights of the spies in Washington who would love to have access to Google's user data.
Much of the struggle at this new level is unarticulated. For one thing, the spies in Washington don't
talk about it. Congress has given them new powers, without debating the issues. Google, Inc. itself
never comments about things that matter, and as a private corporation is largely unaccountable. The
struggle recognized by Google Watch has to do with the clash of real forces, but right now all we can
say is that potentially this struggle could manifest itself in Google's boardroom.
The privacy struggle, which includes both the old issue of consumer protection and this new issue of government surveillance, means that the question of how Google treats the data it collects from users becomes critical. Given that Google is so central to the web, whatever attitude it takes toward privacy has massive implications for the rest of the web in general, and for other search engines in particular.
Call it class warfare, if you like. Because that brings up the other major gripe that Google Watch
has with Google. That's the PageRank problem -- the fact that Google's primary ranking algorithm
has less to do with the quality of web pages, than it has to do with the "power popularity" of web pages. Their approach to ranking is anti-democratic, in that already-powerful pages are mathematically granted extra power to anoint other pages as powerful.
It's not that we believe Google is evil. What we believe is that Google, Inc. is at a fork in the road,
and they have some big decisions to make. This Google Watch site is trying to articulate and publicize
the situation at Google, and encourage more scrutiny of their operations. By doing this, we hope to
play a small part in maintaining the web as an information tool that is more useful for the masses, than
it is for the elites.
That's why we and over 500 others nominated Google for a Big Brother award in 2003. The nine
points we raised in connection with this nomination necessarily focused on privacy issues:
1. Google's immortal cookie:
Google was the first search engine to use a cookie that expires in 2038. This was at a time when
federal websites were prohibited from using persistent cookies altogether. Now it's years later, and
immortal cookies are commonplace among search engines; Google set the standard because no
one
bothered to challenge them. This cookie places a unique ID number on your hard disk. Anytime you
land on a Google page, you get a Google cookie if you don't already have one. If you have one, they read and record your unique ID number.
2. Google records everything they can:
For all searches they record the cookie ID, your Internet IP address, the time and date, your search
terms, and your browser configuration. Increasingly, Google is customizing results based on your IP
number. This is referred to in the industry as "IP delivery based on geolocation."
3. Google retains all data indefinitely:
Google has no data retention policies. There is evidence that they are able to easily access all the user information they collect and save.
4. Google won't say why they need this data:
Inquiries to Google about their privacy policies are ignored. When the New York Times (2002-11-28) asked Sergey Brin about whether Google ever gets subpoenaed for this information, he had no comment.
5. Google hires spooks:
Matt Cutts, a key Google engineer, used to work for the National Security Agency. Google wants to
hire more people with security clearances, so that they can peddle their corporate assets to the
spooks in Washington.
6. Google's toolbar is spyware:
With the advanced features enabled, Google's free toolbar for Explorer phones home with every
page you surf, and yes, it reads your cookie too. Their privacy policy confesses this, but that's only
because Alexa lost a class-action lawsuit when their toolbar did the same thing, and their privacy
policy failed to explain this. Worse yet, Google's toolbar updates to new versions quietly, and without
asking.
This means that if you have the toolbar installed, Google essentially has complete access to your hard
disk every time you connect to Google (which is many times a day). Most software vendors, and even
Microsoft, ask if you'd like an updated version. But not Google. Any software that updates automatically
presents a massive security risk.
7. Google's cache copy is illegal:
Judging from Ninth Circuit precedent on the application of U.S. copyright laws to the Internet,
Google's cache copy appears to be illegal. The only way a webmaster can avoid having his site
cached on Google is to put a "noarchive" meta in the header of every page on his site. Surfers like
the cache, but webmasters don't. Many webmasters have deleted questionable material from their
sites, only to discover later that the problem pages live merrily on in Google's cache. The cache
copy should be "opt-in" for webmasters, not "opt-out."
8. Google is not your friend:
By now Google enjoys a 75 percent monopoly for all external referrals to most websites.
Webmasters cannot avoid seeking Google's approval these days, assuming they want to increase
traffic to their site. If they try to take advantage of some of the known weaknesses in Google's semi-
secret algorithms, they may find themselves penalized by Google, and their traffic disappears. There
are no detailed, published standards issued by Google, and there is no appeal process for penalized
sites. Google is completely unaccountable. Most of the time Google doesn't even answer email from
webmasters.
9. Google is a privacy time bomb:
With 200 million searches per day, most from outside the U.S., Google amounts to a privacy disaster
waiting to happen. Those newly-commissioned data-mining bureaucrats in Washington can only dream
about the sort of slick efficiency that Google has already achieved.
Help end Google Bombs. Send a message to out-of-touch executives.

all sorts of so called semi-classical degradation of the “lesser” humans from which

The official website of the Church of Satan. Founded on April 30, 1966 c.e. by
Anton Szandor LaVey, we are the first above-ground organization in history openly dedicated
to the acceptance of Man’s true nature—that of a carnal beast, living in a cosmos which is
permeated and motivated by the Dark Force which we call Satan. Over the course of time, Man
has called this Force by many names, and it has been reviled by those whose very nature causes
them to be separate from this fountainhead of existence. They live in obsessive envy of we who
exist by flowing naturally with the dread Prince of Darkness. It is for this reason that
individuals who resonate with Satan have always been an alien elite, often outsiders in cultures
whose masses pursue solace in an external deity. We Satanists are our own Gods, and we are
the explorers of the Left-Hand Path. We do not bow down before the myths and fictions of the
desiccated spiritual followers of the Right-Hand Path.

Asmiov's Three (er...Four) Laws of Robotics
You can't call yourself a sci-fi fan, a deep geek, or a robot builder
if you aren't Robot's Rules of Order
A robot may not injure humanity, or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.
1.
A robot may not harm a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come
to harm.
2.
A robot must obey the orders given to it by the human beings, except where such orders
would conflict with the Zeroth or First Law.
3.
A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict the
Zeroth,First, or Second Law.
4.
The laws first appeared, explicitly anyway, in the short story "Runaround" in 1942.
The story was later reprinted in the wildly popular Asimov collection I, Robot in 1950.
Asimov's Laws were basically created as a literary device, something for Asimov to
work off of as he tried to think intelligently and rationally about the future of robots
(and how intelligent robots might interact with humans). The "Zeroth Law" appeared
in a later story as a necessary addition to safeguard all of humanity (not just individuals)
from robot aggression. In the real world, the
Three Laws aren't taken that seriously by most robot researchers, especially because
we aren't even close to having a robot that can parse the full grammatical import of the
words in the sentences that make up the laws, let alone comprehend their meaning.
Some roboticists, such as BEAM (Biological Electronic Aesthetics Mechanics) creator
Mark Tilden, have even suggested that these laws would create laughably wimpy robots.
As Dave Hrynkiw and Tilden point out in their book Junkbots, Bugbots & Bots on Wheels,
"If an Asimovian robot has enough power to push a vacuum cleaner into your toe
(assuming it could even recognize the difference between your toe and a toy lying on the floor), it'd be too nervous to get any practical work done." Still, Asimov and his laws
deserve their props. Just as the laws gave Asimov something to push against in writing
his positronic robot stories, they've also inspired countless other sci-fi writers, and real-
world robot builders.
Which brings us (as a for instance) to Tilden's Laws.
Tilden's Laws
BEAM innovator Mark Tilden (see Heroes of the Robolution trading cards
in Chapter 2, "Robot Evolution") likes his robots a little more feral than Asimov.
A robot must protect its existence at all costs. 1.
A robot must obtain and maintain access to a power source. 2.
A robot must continually search for better power sources. 3.
The more...ah...earthy expressions of these laws are:
.1. Protect thy ass.
.2. Feed thy ass.
.3. Move thy ass to better real estate.
BEAMbots are survivors.
They are built to be hearty and suit the environment in which they find themselves.
This is one reason BEAM developers focus mainly on tried and true analog technologies,
and why they look to biological inspirations (millions of years of evolution can't be all bad).
A fussy big-brained bot with wheels, cameras, multiple processors, and other high-end
gear is not going to last very long, in say, a jungle environment.

15. What are three similarities between bugs and humans? Humans and bugs
both have legs, brains, and the use of gravity to help make walking easier.
16. How does gravity assist in walking? The body uses energy when lifting the
leg up and forward during walking. The immediate action of putting your foot
down is a result of gravity doing the work.
17. Which insect is the strongest animal in the world? The strongest insect in
the world is called the rhinoceros beetle. It can carry up to 800 times its body
weight on six skinny legs.
|
|
A robot built like a Rhinoceros Beetle, with relatively low-tech parts and primitive
sense-act behaviors, is more likely to survive. The other main feature of Tilden's
should go about their (programmed) business and not have to be fiddled with
very often by human operators (see Figure 3.1). So far, in BEAM, this
has translated to solar power as the best way of delivering this autonomy.

Isaac Asimov was wrong! Robots kill!
Landmines are limbless robots killers that follow their bosses' orders
from Hitler's bunker to the Pentagon!
Isaac Asimov, like many others, was wrong. Robots are not our friends.
They are products of industry and, as such, display the traits of their
origins, the primary characteristic of which is massive public relations
and advertising campaigns created to make robots acceptable to the
public they were made to replace.
Sci-Fi films assist in that goal by promoting the myth of "happy robots"
or "sexy androids" while totally ignoring millions of murderous robots
to attract children with fuses which look like candy wrappers or toys!
The land mine is an anti personnel weapon simply calling it a device
obscures/denies the fact that they are designed to kill and maim children.
Isaac Asimov was wrong. Robots are killers.
Limbless landmine's they may be, but they follow their bosses' orders
from Hitler's Bunker to the Pentagon!...
110 Million land mines in 70 nations. This is 10 times the number
of Human Beings that perished in the Holocaust of WW2.
Do the math It's nearly half of the total population living in America.

A federal appeals court last week struck down an FCC decision that required Regional Bell Companies such as Verizon to lease facilities to competitors such as MetTel under UNE-P discounted rates.
The decision was widely recognized as a big victory for the Baby Bells -- and a big blow to competition. As the Los Angeles Times noted, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals is "potentially jeopardizing the competition that saved local phone subscribers an estimated $10 billion a year."
The decision is bad for the economy, bad for you, bad for your customers and bad for the CLEC industry. MetTel attracts customers by offering lower prices and better overall quality than the Baby Bells. Because the decision would raise our costs significantly, it would make it harder for all of us to compete.
There is something you can do to help our collective cause.
The FCC is now deciding whether to appeal the court's ruling to the United States Supreme Court. We need your help -- and the help of your employees and subagents -- to urge the FCC to do so. The Supreme Court has traditionally backed FCC decisions, and twice before, it has supported the competitive telecommunications industry's position. That's why getting the Supreme Court involved is now the best way to preserve the current level of competition in the telecommunications marketplace.
It is very easy for you to join in this grassroots effort. The CompTel Alliance has created a special web site that automatically generates faxes and emails to the FCC, members of Congress and Bush administration officials. Please visit www.comptelaction.org as soon as possible. Click on the "Write the FCC" button. Taking action will take just a few minutes. You'll be able to choose paragraphs that reflect your individual perspective or write your own messages.
Grassroots campaigns like this have been very effective in previous industry battles. Please urge your employees, business associates, family members and friends to visit the web site today. Numbers matter!
This campaign is very important to everyone in the CLEC industry, indeed, to everyone who believes in fair competition in telecommunications.

Changing The "Privacy Rules!"
This is one of a series of articles that I've recently written for
summaries and other resources to help people, especially those on
The Hill who form national policy, to keep up on technological
innovations -- but with an added twist. Future Brief "takes one
step back and looks at the greater convergence of the accelerating
changes in science and technology, with the equally rapidly
accelerating changes in society and politics"
(http://www.futurebrief.com/about.asp). I'm pleased to be able to
share these insights with you here.
Most of us ASSUME that we have at least the 'privacy of anonymity' when
we're out and about - after all, if we're not movie stars or (especially
now) politicians, who would really care about taking our pictures?
Oh, sure, since the days of the Brownie it was possible for someone to
"steal our soul" in a picture, although given the lack of zoom lenses in
those early days we'd have a fighting chance of noticing. Also, in
those olden days, pictures could be taken but there was no immediacy in
their use. Film had to be developed, prints had to be handed around,
and other physical barriers prevented this from being much of an issue.
Today, however, in a rapidly growing world of "PhoneCams" and more, the
rules are different. Someone surreptitiously taking a PhoneCam shot of
you could just as easily be looking up a note or appointment or phone
number on their cell phone (since it can be held in a normal manner and
not "up to the eye.") And, perhaps most significantly, since most
PhoneCams can be set to automatically, and instantly, publish the
pictures they take on a public Web site, the result is irretrievably,
and immediately, "out there" for the world to see. (Which means that
the old "detective movie ploy" of an aggrieved photo subject ripping the
film out of a camera to preserve their privacy, is now relegated to old
movies.) Some businesses take the related threat of industrial
espionage through pictures so seriously that they're already banning
PhoneCams from the premises. And some people are calling for a mandated
"shutter sound" from such picture-capable devices.
So "privacy in public," and eventually privacy in the workplace, may
already be "dead," but hasn't quite yet noticed its changed situation.
Yet this form of a technological loss of privacy, and of others we'll
see below, are only the beginning of technology's "changing the Privacy
rules":
This Is No Key Ring!
Consider this excerpt from a Jan. 12 CNN.com report describing products
introduced at the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES):
Image - Phillips Key Ring Camcorder at CES -
"Philips introduced a digital camcorder the size of a key ring,
including a 1.5-gigabyte hard drive that can store up to 24 minutes
of video. The device, roughly the size of a Pez candy dispenser, can
also hold digital photos or MP3 songs."
See
and
Truth Or Consequences.
How about this excerpt, from the same source:
"One little gadget debuting at CES claims to put truth detection
voice analysis on the bridge of your nose.
"Voice Analysis Eyeglasses" provide real-time analysis on the inside
of the lenses about whoever is talking at the time, says its maker,
the Israeli company Nemesysco, which developed the technology for
counterterrorism and government customers.
"A chip inside the glasses is able to read the voice frequency of
the person you are talking to," said Beata Gutman, a spokeswoman for
the company. "The voice is analyzed through that chip and there are
lights that indicate whether the person is lying."
(I've read that similar technology has proven about 85% effective, but
of course I wouldn't take bets on how well, and reliably, such a device
might work without extensive testing.)
No Fooling THESE Parents (Or Employers)!
Or, consider this from the Jan. 20 Mike's List
"A new service available in Australia called Text Track enables
parents, employers and others to find out roughly where a phone is
by querying it via SMS. The phone replies with an SMS message
revealing the location without ringing or notifying the [person
carrying the cell] phone. "Zones" can be set up -- for example, if
junior is grounded from going to the mall, that location can be
flagged -- and parents get a message if the zone is violated."
Turning The Tables.
For another example of how technology is invading our previous ideas of
"privacy," consider some "fun" that Engineering Professor and long-time
cyborg Steve Mann, of the University of Toronto, has as he exploits his
built-in Internet-connected computer and eye-mounted display with
built-in video camera -- he "turns the tables" on big business:
Image - Professor Steve Mann, 25-years as a cyborg.
and
"...Mann has created performance art by shooting video in stores
that prohibit it, using handheld cameras more noticeable than the
"EyeTap" ocular computing system he normally wears. When
employees tell him filming is not allowed, Mann points to the stores'
own surveillance cameras behind darkened domes in the ceiling.
Then he tells the employees that "HIS manager" makes him film public
places for HIS security -- how does he know, he tells them, that the
fire exits aren't chained shut? -- and that they'll have to talk to
HIS manager."

Emotional Elder Bush Attacks Son's Critics
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - An emotional former President George H.W. Bush on
Tuesday defended his son's Iraq (news - web sites) war and lashed out at White House critics.
It is "deeply offensive and contemptible" to hear "elites and intellectuals on the campaign trail" dismiss
progress in Iraq since last year's overthrow of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein (news - web sites), the elder
Bush said in a speech to the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association annual convention.
"There is something ignorant in the way they dismiss the overthrow of a brutal dictator and the sowing of the
seeds of basic human freedom in that troubled part of the world," he said.
The former president appeared to fight back tears as he complained about media coverage of the younger
Bush that he called "something short of fair and balanced."
"It hurts an awful lot more when it's your son that is being criticized than when they used to get all over my
case," said Bush, who has often complained about media coverage of both Bush presidencies.
Iraq has been torn by violence and instability since a U.S.-led invasion last year toppled Saddam in the hunt
for his alleged weapons of mass destruction. No such weapons have been found but the Bush administration
says progress toward a stable democracy is being made.
The former president, who waged the first Gulf War (news - web sites) against Saddam in 1991, described progress in Iraq as "a miracle."
"Iraq is moving forward in hope and not sliding back into despair and terrorism," he said.
Some critics of the war say the White House focused resources on Iraq instead of the hunt for Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), whom Washington blames for the Sept. 11 attacks.

Once the Nazi regime took power, sterilization was often performed on
these children in the name of the preservation of "racial purity." When
the Rhineland was remilitarized by the Nazis (its first violation of the
Treaty of Versailles), the black population residing there was attacked
directly and forcibly sterilized.
As for African-American prisoners of war, they were
segregated in POW camps and offered less in terms
of provisions, food, etc. Of course, they were
already segregated in the American armed forces, but
their treatment worsened once taken prisoners.
Ironically, black units of the U.S. Armed Forces liberated
several concentration camps in Germany.

US Christian fundamentalists are driving Bush's Middle East policy
George Monbiot Tuesday April 20, 2004The Guardian
To understand what is happening in the Middle East, you must first
understand what is happening in Texas. To understand what is happening
there, you should read the resolutions passed at the state's Republican
party conventions last month. Take a look, for example, at the decisions
made in Harris County, which covers much of Houston.
The delegates began by nodding through a few uncontroversial matters:
homosexuality is contrary to the truths ordained by God; "any mechanism to
process, license, record, register or monitor the ownership of guns" should
be repealed; income tax, inheritance tax, capital gains tax and corporation
tax should be abolished; and immigrants should be deterred by electric
fences. Thus fortified, they turned to the real issue: the affairs of a
small state 7,000 miles away. It was then, according to a participant, that
the "screaming and near fist fights" began.
I don't know what the original motion said, but apparently it was "watered
down significantly" as a result of the shouting match. The motion they
adopted stated that Israel has an undivided claim to Jerusalem and the West
Bank, that Arab states should be "pressured" to absorb refugees from
Palestine, and that Israel should do whatever it wishes in seeking to
eliminate terrorism. Good to see that the extremists didn't prevail then.
But why should all this be of such pressing interest to the people of a
state which is seldom celebrated for its fascination with foreign affairs?
The explanation is slowly becoming familiar to us, but we still have some
difficulty in taking it seriously.
In the United States, several million people have succumbed to an
extraordinary delusion. In the 19th century, two immigrant preachers cobbled
together a series of unrelated passages from the Bible to create what
appears to be a consistent narrative: Jesus will return to Earth when
certain preconditions have been met. The first of these was the
establishment of a state of Israel. The next involves Israel's occupation of
the rest of its "biblical lands" (most of the Middle East), and the
rebuilding of the Third Temple on the site now occupied by the Dome of the
Rock and al-Aqsa mosques. The legions of the antichrist will then be
deployed against Israel, and their war will lead to a final showdown in the
valley of Armageddon. The Jews will either burn or convert to Christianity,
and the Messiah will return to Earth.
What makes the story so appealing to Christian fundamentalists is that
before the big battle begins, all "true believers" (ie those who believe
what they believe) will be lifted out of their clothes and wafted up to
heaven during an event called the Rapture. Not only do the worthy get to sit
at the right hand of God, but they will be able to watch, from the best
seats, their political and religious opponents being devoured by boils,
sores, locusts and frogs, during the seven years of Tribulation which
follow.
The true believers are now seeking to bring all this about. This means
staging confrontations at the old temple site (in 2000, three US Christians
were deported for trying to blow up the mosques there), sponsoring Jewish
settlements in the occupied territories, demanding ever more US support for
Israel, and seeking to provoke a final battle with the Muslim world/Axis of
Evil/United Nations/ European Union/France or whoever the legions of the
antichrist turn out to be.
The believers are convinced that they will soon be rewarded for their
efforts. The antichrist is apparently walking among us, in the guise of Kofi
Annan, Javier Solana, Yasser Arafat or, more plausibly, Silvio Berlusconi.
The Wal-Mart corporation is also a candidate (in my view a very good one),
because it wants to radio-tag its stock, thereby exposing humankind to the
Mark of the Beast.
By clicking on www.rapture ready.com, you can discover how close you might
be to flying out of your pyjamas. The infidels among us should take note
that the Rapture Index currently stands at 144, just one point below the
critical threshold, beyond which the sky will be filled with floating
nudists. Beast Government, Wild Weather and Israel are all trading at the
maximum five points (the EU is debat ing its constitution, there was a freak
hurricane in the south Atlantic, Hamas has sworn to avenge the killing of
its leaders), but the second coming is currently being delayed by an
unfortunate decline in drug abuse among teenagers and a weak showing by the
antichrist (both of which score only two).
We can laugh at these people, but we should not dismiss them. That their
beliefs are bonkers does not mean they are marginal. American pollsters
believe that 15-18% of US voters belong to churches or movements which
subscribe to these teachings. A survey in 1999 suggested that this figure
included 33% of Republicans. The best-selling contemporary books in the US
are the 12 volumes of the Left Behind series, which provide what is usually
described as a "fictionalised" account of the Rapture (this, apparently,
distinguishes it from the other one), with plenty of dripping details about
what will happen to the rest of us. The people who believe all this don't
believe it just a little; for them it is a matter of life eternal and death.
And among them are some of the most powerful men in America. John Ashcroft,
the attorney general, is a true believer, so are several prominent senators
and the House majority leader, Tom DeLay. Mr DeLay (who is also the
co-author of the marvellously named DeLay-Doolittle Amendment, postponing
campaign finance reforms) travelled to Israel last year to tell the Knesset
that "there is no middle ground, no moderate position worth taking".
So here we have a major political constituency - representing much of the
current president's core vote - in the most powerful nation on Earth, which
is actively seeking to provoke a new world war. Its members see the invasion
of Iraq as a warm-up act, as Revelation (9:14-15) maintains that four angels
"which are bound in the great river Euphrates" will be released "to slay the
third part of men". They batter down the doors of the White House as soon as
its support for Israel wavers: when Bush asked Ariel Sharon to pull his
tanks out of Jenin in 2002, he received 100,000 angry emails from Christian
fundamentalists, and never mentioned the matter again.
The electoral calculation, crazy as it appears, works like this. Governments
stand or fall on domestic issues. For 85% of the US electorate, the Middle
East is a foreign issue, and therefore of secondary interest when they enter
the polling booth. For 15% of the electorate, the Middle East is not just a
domestic matter, it's a personal one: if the president fails to start a
conflagration there, his core voters don't get to sit at the right hand of
God. Bush, in other words, stands to lose fewer votes by encouraging Israeli
aggression than he stands to lose by restraining it. He would be mad to
listen to these people. He would also be mad not to.

Mister Presidents
You can't escape history forever
German Minister's Interview
Rips 911 Case Open
Von Buelow: I can state: the planning of the attacks was technically and organizationally a master
achievement. To hijack four huge airplanes within a few minutes and within one hour, to drive them
into their targets, with complicated flight maneuvers! This is unthinkable, without years-long support
from secret apparatuses of the state and industry.
Q: You are a conspiracy theorist!
Von Buelow: Yeah, yeah. That's the ridicule heaped [on those raising these questions] by those who
would prefer to follow the official, politically correct line. Even investigative journalists are fed
propaganda and disinformation.
Andreas von Buelow is a former German Minister of Technology and State Secretary in the Defense Ministry;
he served for 25 years on a parliamentary commission overseeing all three branches of German intelligence. His
book, In the Name of the State details the criminal activities of secret services, including the CIA.
(DRAFT) [Source: Tagesspiegel, Jan. 13] PARTIAL TRANSLATION
The following interview with Von Buelow appeared in the German daily 'Tagesspiegel,' on Jan. 13.
Q: You seem so angry, really upset.
Von Buelow: I can explain what's bothering me: I see that after the horrifying attacks of Sept. 11, all political
public opinion is being forced into a direction that I consider wrong.
Q: What do you mean by that?
Von Buelow: I wonder why many questions are not asked. Normally, with such a terrible thing, various leads and
tracks appear that are then commented on, by the investigators, the media, the government: Is there something
here or not? Are the explanations plausible? This time, this is not the case at all. It already began just hours after
the attacks in New York and Washington and--
Q: In those hours, there was horror, and grief.
Von Buelow: Right, but actually it was astounding: There are 26 intelligence services in the U.S.A. with a budget
of (over) $30 billion--
Q: More than the German defense budget.
Von Buelow: --which were not able to prevent the attacks. In fact, they didn't even have an inkling they would
happen. For 60 decisive minutes, the military and intelligence agencies let the fighter planes stay on the ground,
48 hours later, however, the FBI presented a list of suicide attackers. Within ten days, it emerged that seven of
them were still alive.
Q: What, please?
Von Buelow: Yes, yes. And why did the FBI chief take no position regarding contradictions? Where the list came
from, why it was false? If I were the chief investigator (state attorney) in such a case, I would regularly go to the
public, and give information on which leads are valid and which not.
Q: The U.S. government talked about an emergency situation after the attacks: They said they were in a war. Is it
not understandable that one does not tell the enemy everything one knows about him?
Von Buelow: Naturally. But a government which goes to war, must first establish who the attacker, the enemy, is.
It has a duty to provide evidence. According to its own admission, it has not been able to present any evidence
that would hold up in court.
Q: Some information on the perpetrators has been proven with documents. The suspected leader, Mohammad
Atta, left Portland for Boston on the morning of Sept. 11, in order to board the plane that later hit the World Trade
Center
Von Buelow: If this Atta was the decisive man in the operation, it's really strange that he took such a risk of
taking a plane that would reach Boston such a short time before the connecting flight. Had his flight been a few
minutes late, he would not have been in the plane that was hijacked. Why should a sophisticated terrorist do this?
One can, by the way, read on CNN (Internet) that none of these names were on the official passenger lists. None
of them had gone through the check-in procedures. And why did none of the threatened pilots give the
agreed-upon code 7700 over the [Steuerknueppel: STEERING NOB?] to the ground station? In addition: The
German Minister's Interview Rips 911 Case Open
black boxes which are fire and shock proof, as well as the voice recordings, contain no valuable data--
Q: That sounds like--
Von Buelow: --like assailants who, in their preparations, leave tracks behind them like a herd of stampeding
elephants? They made payments with credit cards with their own names; they reported to their flight instructors
with their own names. They left behind rented cars with flight manuals in Arabic for jumbo jets. They took with
them, on their suicide trip, wills and farewell letters, which fall into the hands of the FBI, because they were
stored in the wrong place and wrongly addressed. Clues were left like behind like in a child's game of
hide-and-seek, which were to be followed!
There is also the theory of one British flight engineer:
According to this, the steering of the planes was perhaps taken out of the pilots' hands, from outside.
The Americans had developed a method in the 1970s, whereby they could rescue hijacked planes by intervening
into the computer piloting [automatic pilot system]. This theory says, this technique was abused in this case.
That's a theory....
Q: Which sounds really adventurous, and was never considered.
Von Buelow: You see! I do not accept this theory, but I find it worth considering. And what about the obscure
stock transactions? In the week prior to the attacks, the amount of transactions in stocks in American Airlines,
United Airlines, and insurance companies, increased 1,200%. It was for a value of $15 billion. Some people must
have known something. Who?
Q: Why don't you speculate on who it might have been.
Von Buelow: With the help of the horrifying attacks, the Western mass democracies were subjected to
brainwashing. The enemy image of anti-communism doesn't work any more; it is to be replaced by peoples of
Islamic belief. They are accused of having given birth to suicidal terrorism.
Q: Brainwashing? That's a tough term.
Von Buelow: Yes? But the idea of the enemy image doesn't come from me. It comes from Zbigniew Brzezinski
and Samuel Huntington, two policy-makers of American intelligence and foreign policy. Already in the middle of
German Minister's Interview Rips 911 Case Open
he 1990s, Huntingon believed, people in Europe and the U.S. needed someone they could hate-- this would
strengthen their identification with their own society. And Brzezinski, the mad dog, as adviser to President Jimmy
Carter, campaigned for the exclusive right of the U.S. to seize all the raw materials of the world, especially oil and
gas.
Q: You mean, the events of Sept. 11--
Von Buelow: --fit perfectly in the concept of the armaments industry, the intelligence agencies, the whole
military-industrial-academic complex. This is in fact conspicuous. The huge raw materials reserves of the former
Soviet Union are now at their disposal, also the pipeline routes and--
Q: Erich Follach described that at length in {Spiegel}: ``It's a matter of military bases, drugs, oil and gas
reserves.''
Von Buelow: I can state: the planning of the attacks was technically and organizationally a master achievement.
To hijack four huge airplanes within a few minutes and within one hour, to drive them into their targets, with
complicated flight maneuvers! This is unthinkable, without years-long support from secretapparatuses of the state
and industry.
Q: You are a conspiracy theorist!
Von Buelow: Yeah, yeah. That's the ridicule heaped [on those raising these questions] by those who would prefer
to follow the official, politically correct line. Even investigative journalists are fed propaganda and
disinformation. Anyone who doubts that, doesn't have all his marbles! That is your accusation.
Q: Your career actually speaks against the idea that you are not in your right mind. You were already in the 1970s,
state secretary in the Defense Ministry; in 1993 you were the SPD [Social Democratic Party] speaker in the
Schalk-Golodkowski investigation committee--
Von Buelow: And it all began there! Until that time, I did not have any great knowledge of the work of
intelligence agencies. And now we had to take note of a great discrepancy: We shed light on the dealings of the
Stasi and other East bloc intelligence agencies in the field of economic criminality, but as soon as we wanted to
know something about the activities of the BND [German intelligence] or the CIA, it was mercilessly blocked. No
information, no cooperation, nothing! That's when I was first taken aback.
Q: Schalck-Golodkowski mediated, among other things, various business deals abroad. When you looked at his
German Minister's Interview Rips 911 Case Open
.case more closely--
Von Buelow: We found, for example, a clue in Rostock, where Schalck organized his weapons depot. Well, then
we happened upon an affiliation of Schalck in Panama, and then we happened upon Manuel Noriega, who was for
many years President, drug dealer, and money launderer, all in one, right? And this Noriega was also on the
payroll of the CIA, for $200,000 a year. These were things that really made me curious.
Q: You wrote a book on the dealings of the CIA and Co. In the meantime, you have become an expert regarding
the strange things related to intelligence services' work.
Von Buelow: ``Strange things'' is the wrong term. What has gone on, and goes on, in the name of intelligence
services, are true crimes.
Q: What would you say determines the work of intelligence services?
Von Buelow: So that we don't have any misunderstandings: I find that it makes sense to have intelligence
services....
Q: You don't think much of the earlier proposals by the Greens, who wanted to dismantle these agencies?
Von Buelow: No. It is right to take a look behind the scenes. Getting intelligence about the intentions of an
enemy, makes sense. It is important when one tries to put oneself into the mind of the enemy. Whoever wants to
understand the CIA's methods, has to deal with its main tasks, {covert operations}: below the level of war, and
outside international law, foreign states are to be influenced, by organizing insurrections, terrorist attacks, usually
combined with drugs and weapons trade, and money laundering. This is essentially very simple: One arms violent
people with weapons. Since, however, it must not under any circumstances come out, that there is an intelligence
agency behind it, all traces are erased, with tremendous deployment of resources.
I have the impression that this kind of intelligence agency spends 90% of its time this way: creating false leads. So
that, if anyone suspects the collaboration of the agencies, he is accused of the sickness of conspiracy madness.
The truth often comes out only years later. CIA chief Allen Dulles once said: In case of doubt, I would even lie to
the Congress!
Q: The American journalist Seymour M. Hersh, wrote in the {New Yorker,} that even some people in the CIA
and government assumed, that certain leads had been laid in order to confuse the investigators. Who, Herr von
Buelow, would have done this?
German Minister's Interview Rips 911 Case Open
Von Buelow: I don't know that either. How should I? I simply use my common sense, and-- See: The terrorists
behaved in such a way to attract attention. And as practicing Muslims, they were in a strip-tease bar, and,
drunken, stuck dollar bills into the panty of the dancer.
Q: Things like that also happen.
Von Buelow: It may be. As a lone fighter, I cannot prove anything, that's beyond my capabilities. I have real
difficulties, however, to imagine that all this all sprung out ofthe mind of an evil man in his cave.
Q: Mr. von Buelow, you yourself say that you are alone in your criticism. Formerly, you were part of the political
establishment, now
you are an outsider.
Von Buelow: That is a problem sometimes, but one gets used to it. By the way, I know a lot of people, including
very influential ones, who agree with me, but only in whispers, never publicly.
Q: Do you still have contact with old SPD companions, such as Egon Bahr and former Chancellor Helmut
Schmidt?
Von Buelow: There are no close contacts any more. I wantedto go to the last SPD party congress, but I was sick.
Q: Can it be, Mr. von Buelow, that you are a mouthpiece for typical anti-Americanism?
Von Buelow: Nonsense, this has absolutely nothing to do with anti-Americanism. I am a great admirer of this
great, open, free society, and always have been. I studied in the U.S.
Q: How did you get the idea that there could be a link between the attacks and the American intelligence
agencies?
Von Buelow: Do you remember the first attack on the WorldTrade Center in 1993?
Q: Six people were killed and over a thousand wounded, by a bomb explosion.
German Minister's Interview Rips 911 Case Open
Von Buelow: In the middle was the bombmaker, a former Egyptian officer. He had pulled together some Muslims
for the attack. They were snuck into the country by the CIA, despite a State Department ban on their entry. At the
same time, the leader of the band was an FBI informant.
And he made a deal with the authorities: At the last minute, the dangerous explosive material would be replaced
by a harmless powder.
The FBI did not stick to the deal. The bomb exploded, so to speak, with the knowledge of the FBI. The official
story of the crime was quickly found: The criminals were evil Muslims.
Q: At the time Soviet soldiers marched into Afghanistan, you were in the cabinet of Helmut Schmidt. What was it
like?
Von Buelow: The Americans pushed for trade sanctions, they demanded the boycott of the Olympic games in
Moscow....
Q.... which the German government followed...
Von Buelow: And today we know: It was the strategy of the American security adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, to
destabilize the Soviet Union from neighboring Muslim countries They lured the Russians into Afghanistan, and
then prepared for them a hell on earth, their Vietnam. With decisive support of the U.S. intelligence agencies, at
least 30,000 Muslim fighters were trained in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a bunch of good-for-nothings and fanatics
who were, and still are today, ready for anything.
And one of them is Osama bin Laden. I wrote years ago: ` `It was out of this brood, that the Taliban grew up in
Afghanistan, who had been brought up in the Koran schools financed by American and Saudi funds, the Taliban
who are now terrorizing the country and destroying it
Q: Even though you say, for the U.S. it was a matter of raw materials in the region, the starting point for the U.S.
aggression, was the terrorist attack which cost thousands of human lives.
Von Buelow: Completely true. One must always keep this gruesome act in mind. Nonetheless, in the analysis of
political processes, I am allowed to look and see who has advantages and disadvantages, and what is coincidental.
When in doubt, it is always worthwhile to take a look at a map, where are raw materials resources, and the routes
to them? Then lay a map of civil wars and conflicts on top of that --they coincide. The same is the case with the
third map: nodal points of the drug trade.
German Minister's Interview Rips 911 Case Open
Where this all comes together, the American intelligence services are not far away. By the way, the Bush family
is linked to oil, gas, and weapons trade, through the bin Laden family.
Q: What do you think of the Bin Laden films?
Von Buelow: When one is dealing with intelligence services, one can imagine manipulations of the highest
quality. Hollywood could provide these techniques. I consider the videos inappropriate as evidence.
Q: You believe the CIA is capable of anything, [wouldn't stop at anything].
Von Buelow: The CIA, in the state interests of the U.S., does not have to abide by any law in interventions
abroad, is not bound by international law; only the President gives orders.
And when funds are cut, peace is on the horizon, then a bomb explodes somewhere. Thus it is proven, that you
can't do without the intelligence services; and that the critics are {nuts,} as Father Bush called them, Bush who
was once CIA head and President.
You have to see that the U.S. spends $30 billion on intelligence services, and $13 billion on anti-drug work. And
what comes out of it?
The chief of a special unit of the strategic anti-drug work [Michael Levin] declared, in despair, after 30 years of
service, that in every big, important drug case, the CIA came in and took it out of my hands.
Q: Do you criticize the German government for its reaction after Sept. 11?
Von Buelow: No. To assume that the government were independent in these questions, would be naive.
Q: Herr von Buelow, what will you do now?
Von Buelow: Nothing. My task is concluded by saying, it could not have been that way [according to
the official story] Search for the truth!
