RESUME
 George W. Bush
 The White House, USA

 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

LAW ENFORCEMENT: I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving under the influence of alcohol. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver's license suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been "lost" and is not available.
MILITARY: I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas Air National Guard,
I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.

COLLEGE: I graduated from Yale University with a low C average. I was a cheerleader.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE:

I ran for US Congress and lost.
I began my career in the oil business in Midland, Texas, in 1975. I bought
an oil company, but couldn't find any oil in Texas. The company went bankrupt shortly
after I sold all my stock. I bought the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart
deal that took land using taxpayer money.
With the help of my father and our right-wing friends in the oil industry (including
Enron CEO Ken Lay), I was elected governor of Texas.

 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR:
I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making Texas
the most polluted state in the Union.
During my tenure, Houston replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in
America.  I cut taxes and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in
borrowed money.
I set the record for the most executions by any governor in America history.
With the help of my brother, the governor of Florida, and my father's appointments
to the Supreme Court, I became President after losing by over 500,000 votes.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT:
I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over one billion dollars
 per week.
I spent the US surplus and effectively bankrupted the US Treasury.
I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in US history.

I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12-month period. I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the history of the US
 stock market.
I am the first President in US history
to enter office with a criminal record.

I set the all-time record for most days on vacation in any one-year period.
After taking off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure in US history.

In my State of the Union Address, I lied about our reasons for attacking
Iraq, and then blamed the lies on our British friends.
I set the record for most campaign fundraising trips by a US President.
In my first year in office, over 2 million Americans lost their jobs and
 that trend continues every month.
I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12-month period.
I appointed more convicted criminals to administration than any President
in US history.
I set the record for least number of press conferences of any President
 since the advent of television.
I presided over the biggest energy crisis in US history and refused to
intervene when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed.
I presided over the highest gasoline prices in US history.

I have cut health care benefits for war veterans and support a cut in duty
benefits for active duty troops and their families -- in wartime.

I have set the all-time record for most people worldwide to simultaneously
protest against me in public venues (15 million people), shattering the
record for protest against any I've broken more international treaties than
any President in US history.

I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any
administration in US history. My "poorest millionaire," Condoleeza Rice,
has a Chevron oil tanker named after her.
I am the first President in US history to order an unprovoked, preemptive attack
and the military occupation of a sovereign nation. I did so against the will of the
United Nations, the majority of US citizens, and the world community. I refused to
allow inspector's access to US "prisoners of war" detainees and thereby have
refused to abide by the Geneva Convention.

I am the first President in history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 US election). I am the all-time US and world record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations.

My largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth Lay,
presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud in US history. My political party
used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to assure my success with the US
Supreme Court during my election decision. I hav protected my friends at Enron and
Halliburton against investigation or prosecution. More time and money was spent
investigating the Monica Lewinsky affair than has been spent investigating one of the
 biggest corporate rip-offs in history.
I garnered the most sympathy for the US after the World Trade Centerattacks and less
than a year later made the US the most hated country in the world, the largest failure of diplomacy in world history.

I am the first President in history to have a majority of Europeans
(71% view my presidency) as the biggest threat to world peace and security.
I changed the US policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government
contracts.

I have so far failed to fulfill my pledge to bring Osama Bin Laden and Saddam
 Hussein to justice.

 RECORDS AND REFERENCES:
All records of my tenure as governor of Texas are now in my father's library,
sealed and unavailable for public view.
All records of SEC investigations into my insider trading and my bankrupt companies

White Africans on trial for attempt of revolt

Today the Supreme Court of the Republic of South Africa located in Bloemfontein starts hearing of the case on organization of an armed revolt with a view to bring ?white¦ government to power in the country.

Basic charges have been brought against brothers Michel and Andre du Toy and Jacob du Plessi. The people are organizers and inspirers of the revolt. The rebellious organization consisted of some 4,000 people all about the country. They planned to create a crisis situation in the country (organize actions of terrorism, cut off energy and water supply), that could be further incriminated to the South African Muslim or Jewish communities.

The crisis period would be very convenient for capture of military bases, weapon and ammunition storehouses, prisons, hospitals, mass media, financial institutions and largest supermarkets. The action was designed as a measure to establish order and legality. The revolt-s concluding stage supposed expulsion of all black people and people of Asiatic origin to the province of KawZulu Natal. It was planned further to separate the province from a new ?white¦ state. Or it was also suggested, those people were to be removed to the neighboring African countries.

However, a detailed scheme failed when plotters tried to involve a colonel from the South African air forces in the scheme. The man informed police and state security authorities of the preparations.

Investigation of the ?plot case¦ lasted for several months, the court starts hearing only now.

It is known perfectly well that many white people are displeased with the fact that the government is black. Over the period of Apartheid regime, when white people were in a privileged position, many of them got used to the subordinate position of the black population. Then, it was not a surprise, the white population felt as if their rights were infringed upon with coming of black government to power in the country.

Despite all appeals of the first black president of South Africa Nelson Mandela to be more racially tolerant, many Africans think black people are to be revenged upon for dozens of humiliation years. Certainly, the South African government does not share this point of view. But over the past years white citizens of the country prefer to retire from state establishments. And those black colleagues who remain in the office, are not so much experienced for governmental work that is of great importance for the country. A month ago the South African government even asked the retired white officials to get back to service. Economic state of the country aggravates the situation even more. Some sources inform, about half of the population are unemployed. Majority of them are blacks, who failed to obtain good education and professional skills over the Apartheid period to get good work nowadays. So, the incumbent government has got enough problems to be settled besides the plotters.

No doubt, the hearing is to be really very scandalous. Indeed, any topic in South Africa is
closely connected with the problem of white-black relationship.

Pentagon Dreams of Playing 'GloboCop' By Jim Lobe, Inter Press Service
June 13, 2003
As it did in its speedy but still unfinished military campaign in Iraq, the Pentagon is hastily
planning to re-deploy U.S. forces and equipment around the world in ways that will
permit Washington to play "GloboCop."

While preparing sharp reductions in forces in Germany, Turkey and Saudi Arabia,
military planners are talking about establishing semi-permanent or permanent bases
along a giant swathe of global territory – increasingly referred to as "the arc of instability"
 – from the Caribbean Basin through Africa to South and Central Asia and across to
 North Korea.

The latest details, disclosed by the Wall Street Journal on June 10, include plans to
increase U.S. forces in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa across the Red Sea from Yemen,
set up semi-permanent "forward bases" in Algeria, Morocco and possibly Tunisia, and
establish smaller facilities in Senegal, Ghana and Mali that could be used to intervene
in oil-rich West African countries, particularly Nigeria.

Similar bases – or what some call "lily pads" – are now being sought or expanded in
northern Australia, Thailand (whose prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be here
for talks this week), Singapore, the Philippines, Kenya, Georgia, Azerbaijan, throughout
Central Asia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Qatar, Vietnam and Iraq.

"We are in the process of taking a fundamental look at our military
posture worldwide, including in the United States," said Deputy
Defence Secretary Paul Wolfowitz on a recent visit to Singapore,
where he met with military chiefs and defense ministers from
throughout East Asia about U.S. plans there. "We're facing a very
different threat than any one we've faced historically."

Those plans represent a major triumph for Wolfowitz, who 12 years ago
argued in a controversial draft 'Defense Planning Guidance' (DPG) for realigning U.S. forces globally so as to "retain pre-eminent responsibility
for addressing selectively those wrongs which threaten not only our own interests, but those of our allies or friends, or which could seriously unsettle international relations."

The same draft, which was largely repudiated by the first Bush administration after it was
leaked to the New York Times, also argued for "a unilateral U.S. defense guarantee" to
Eastern Europe "preferably in co-operation with other NATO states," and the use of pre-
emptive force against nations suspected of having weapons of mass destruction – both
of which views are now codified as U.S. strategic doctrine.

The draft DPG also argued that U.S. military intervention should become a "constant
fixture" of the new world order. It is precisely that capability towards which the Pentagon's
force realignments appear to be directed.

With forward bases located all along the so-called "arc of instability," Washington can
pre-position equipment and military personnel that would permit it to intervene with force
within hours of the outbreak of any crisis.

In that respect, the new global strategy would be similar to the U.S. position beginning in
the 19th century vis-à-vis Latin America, where the U.S. has frequently intervened to
protect its interests from real or perceived threats.

Nearby countries so involved included Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Haiti and several
others. The interventions were usually followed by long occupations and the
establishment of friendly but authoritarian regimes, like those of Batista, Somoza and
"Papa Doc" Duvalier. The U.S. Contra war against the Sandinista regime in Nicaragua
in the 1980s might be considered a sequel to the earlier action. America's increasing
role in Colombia's current civil war also fits the pattern.

On a grander scale, the U.S. has assisted military takeovers in larger countries like
Chile, Brazil, and Argentina, with the usual bloody results.

Indeed, as pointed out by Max Boot, a neo-conservative writer at the Council on Foreign
Relations, Wolfowitz's 1992 draft – now mostly codified in the September 2002 National
Security Strategy of the USA – is not all that different from the 1903 Theodore Roosevelt
Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine asserted Washington's
"international police power" to intervene against "chronic wrongdoing, or an impotence
which results in a general loosening of the ties of civilized society."

The new and proposed deployments are being justified by similar rhetoric. Just
substitute "globalization" for "civilization."

The emerging Pentagon doctrine, founded mainly on the work of retired Admiral Arthur
Cebrowski, chief of the Pentagon's Office of Force Transformation, and Thomas Barnett
of the Naval War College, argues that it is precisely countries and regions that are
"disconnected" from the prevailing trends of economic globalization that posed the
greatest dangers.

"Disconnectedness is one of the great danger signs around the world," Cebrowski told
an audience at the rightwing Heritage Foundation last month in an update of the "general
loosening of the ties of civilized society" formula of a century ago.

Barnett's term for areas of greatest threat is "the Gap," places where "globalization is thinning or just plain absent." Such regions are typically "plagued by politically repressive regimes, widespread poverty and disease, routine mass murder, and – most important – the chronic conflicts that incubate the next generation of terrorists."

"If we map out U.S. military responses since the end of the Cold War, we find an
overwhelming concentration of activity in the regions of the world that are excluded from globalization's growing Core – namely the Caribbean Rim, virtually all of Africa, the
Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and Southwest Asia, and much
of Southeast Asia," Barnett wrote in Esquire magazine earlier this year.

The challenge in fighting terrorist networks is both to "get them where they live" in the
arc of instability and prevent them from spreading their influence into what Barnett calls
"seam states" located between the Gap and the Core.

Such seam states, he says, include Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Morocco, Algeria, Greece, Turkey, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Those nations, the logic goes, should play critical roles, presumably including providing forward
bases, for interventions into the Gap.

At the same time, if states "loosen their ties" to the global economy, "bloodshed will
follow. If you are lucky," according to Barnett, "so will American troops."

On the eve of the war in Iraq, which has been followed by an occupation increasingly
under siege, Barnett predicted that taking Baghdad would not be about settling old
scores or enforcing the disarmament of those famous weapons of mass destruction, yet
to be found. Rather, he wrote, it "will mark a historic tipping point – the moment when
Washington takes real ownership of strategic security in the age of globalization."

Barnett's so-called arc corresponds well to regions of oil, gas and mineral wealth, a
reminder again of Wolfowitz's 1992 draft study. It asserted that the key objective of U.S.
strategy should be "to prevent any hostile power from dominating a region whose
resources would, under consolidated control, be sufficient to generate global power."

"Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia,  nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy and it  is always a simple matter to drag  the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship,or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always  be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. Check out the "People" page on the Carlyle Group's
  BIG! by voxfux       [Main Index]
06/16/2002 Entry:

Clandestine forms of organization are the principle
cause of suffering on the planet today. They are
quantifiable, real and deadly. The US spends over
$400 Billion a year to clandestinely "Fuck Over"
the free people of the world.

This is why the people of the world unanimously hate us. If the US simply took
HALF the $400 billion we normally spend to "fuck over" the people of the
world and instead simply GAVE it to them, the US would be the most loved
country and people of the world in all of an instant. Terrorism would vanish
overnight. And guess what we could do with the remaining $200 Billion?

Split it up and put it right back in the pockets of the American people where it belongs - where it came from - who they stole it from in the first place.

Mr George Bush Sr, sitting on the board of the largest arms manufacturer in the
world "The Carlyle Group" is involving the peoples of the world in his Vesuvian
conflict of interest. He has only a vested interest in WAR and war alone. He will
NOT reap a vast personal fortunes if the world is in a state of peace. And so
what do you think our President's father is going to tell his son to do? -
Seek peace and reap no personal profits or start a world crusade and become
fabulously wealthy. Think about it. What ever happened to the concept of being weary of issues of conflict of interest?

There needs to be a global set of international treaties in place to assure these conflicts of interest don't endanger the families and children of the world and
cause vast suffering, simply because a group of cunning Republican operatives
in Texas can hire the most ruthless and dangerous campaign managers like Karl
Rove. It's these immoral lying pigs which are causing
so much trouble in the world today.

There has never been a more urgent time for the people of the earth to rise
up and demand the end of all forms of clandestine governmental and military organizations.

The United Nations needs to identify the gross destruction and human suffering
that these entities are inflicting on the planet earth before it is too late.

The UN needs to urgently draft a report outlining the total COST of these
clandestine assassins. Secret governmental entities must be outlawed this
much is certain, or humankind will continue to be imprisoned by these spiritually
and intellectually simpleminded, yet immorally cunning and unfathomably destructive industrial terrorists.

With little vision besides a shallow empty capitalist mandate
these clandestine operatives merely rape markets, plunder
resources, murder people, destroy cultures and ruin the planet earth for the great masses of the world's people.
And they give nothing back.

These clandestine operatives are the leeches of society.
You wouldn't even want to hang out with them on a
Saturday night - Trust me on this one - Because they have
no souls, nothing to say. They are just pigs - feeding.

Operating under the illusion that they are the masters of the
universe They have rigged the game.

There is only an illusion of free markets.

The whole idea of economic summits is that they are a
convenient place to rig markets. How is it a Free Market
when the industrialist buys off a foreignpolitical leader
to curry favorable conditions or worse - so that the
politician allows the industrialist to outright abuse and enslave that politician's population. It happens all the
time.

(See Indonesia) (see Philippines) When clandestine operatives are involved it becomes a rigged market.
Rigged to serve the few, paid for by the blood, sweat
and tears of the many.

It is not freedom that we live under. It is a sick industrial slavery turning us into isolated units of consumption - corporate surfs and vassals - wasting our precious life
and youth in service to the lie of capitalism. We are consumers not humans. Products not poets. Shoppers
not travellers.

The massive buildup of clandestine forces all answering
to one man, George Bush Jr. (Sr.), in the months since 9/11 is the most alarming anddisproportionate buildup of any force of it's type since World War II. There is now
more covert operators EVER under the control of any one man than ever before in the history of the world. And they
are all controlled in actuality By George Bush the father -
yet increasingly George Bush the son, anxious to take on  the big job, and impress his dad and family, is increasingly
taking the reigns from his dad to demonstrate to him that
he really can do it and that he's not as simpleminded as so many suggest.

The problem is, that he IS a simpleton and his father,
although possibly the darkest and most criminal of (spys)
Presidents, is getting old. That George Jr. is an idiot, this
much is certain -barely able to string a coherent sentence
together - his unconvincing grimaces of mock profundity when he addresses the most serious of issues tells the whole story.

He's a piss-poor actor.
When he reads the speeches written by his fathers teams
of handlers and operators, it is so very clearly obvious that
at times the principle focus of the president as he is reading
the words is not the content of the words, but getting the
words right, not slurring them, not making any big blunders,
and making sure he injects the proper tones of seriousness
at the right times.
At other times it's not so much the typographical
errors that are on his mind but the fact that he is
hiding the foreknowledge and limited info that he
does have about his father's teams of operatives/
terrorists.

At best he's a blustering, bluffing,
  blundering fuckin' Texas idiot.

At worst he's an accessory to the biggest mass murder in
the History of the United States.
Please enlighten yourselves by the work of Walter Burien, regarding the financial tricks of your
government. Legitimately, the government can lay and collect taxes, but not stash surplus

An Mk-Ultra Survivor Speaks Out: Concerns About Wartime Mind Control Tactics
Wartime Mind Control Tactics –
A Survivor Speaks Monday, 31 March 2003, 12:00 pm Opinion: Guest Opinion

 By Kathleen A. Sullivan      March 28, 2003
Something’s been bothering me lately. It isn’t my concern about the war – I don’t have any loved ones
who are serving in Iraq. It isn’t about the constant terror alerts, because I frankly haven’t seen or heard
anything yet that indicates that I should be more afraid of a terrorist attack than of being killed in an
automobile accident. My fear stems from the awareness that a successful campaign is being waged
through much of the media to shut down logic and critical thinking in the minds of most Americans.
One of the reasons this frightens me is that I am one of many hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of
awakening survivors of the CIA’s MKULTRA mind-control programmes. I was a victim of mind-control
techniques and related brutality for more than three straight decades. I am one of the original “guinea
pigs” who was relentlessly tested and experimented on, from early childhood, to become a severely
dissociated human robot who would do whatever my handlers desired. (See my personal website,
What are the signs I’ve found, that indicate to me that such a campaign is still being waged against
the collective mind of the American public?

Because I live in Tennessee, I scan the daily editorial section of our local newspaper, the Chattanooga
Times/Free Press. Chattanooga is a lovely, albeit conservative, right-wing community. We have many
Southern Baptist and Pentecostal churches, as well as several religious colleges that add to the effect.
I’m accustomed to reading letters to the editor that express conservative beliefs that seem to be the warp and woof of our community. I am not accustomed, however, to reading letters that insist that
anyone who disagrees with the President, and his decision to invade Iraq, are flat-out wrong and
unpatriotic.
Several letters each day claim that we are “unpatriotic” and are “not supporting the troops” if we
openly oppose the war. The authors don’t seem understand that our current administration is the
entity that is not supporting the troops – because it is sending them into harm’s way! And in reality,
those who protest the war are probably more concerned about our troops than those who wave the American flag while cheering the troops into battle. (I’ve often wondered if such flag-wavers are
vicariously fighting their own “bad guys” through the troops.)

The letters also state that we should “stand behind our president, our commander-in-chief,”
regardless of our personal beliefs and convictions, now that we’ve gone to war. They errantly
suggest that there is a magical, invisible “war” line that we’ve crossed over, beyond which there
is no room left for dissent or analytical thinking. Being at war doesn’t negate our right to continue to openly oppose the war.

Fox News reported last night that anti-war demonstrations being held in various cities throughout America are causing local police to attend to the “disruptive” protestors, thereby diverting those officers from attending to their regular duties, and from attending to “homeland security.” Fox News
added that such diversions of police services are costing one large city $900,000. In reality, the war
that the protestors are expressing their opposition to will probably cost our country hundreds of
billions of dollars. Which actions are more costly?

We are told by the President, Rumsfeld, and other politicians that
Hussein’s regime is brutal and despicable. Why? Because its soldiers
have executed imprisoned US troops and have used trickery – via phony
“surrendering”

Iraqi soldiers – to attack some of our troops. I am not in any way
condoning what has been done to our troops. Such tactics are inhumane.

But isn’t our committing cold-blooded murder equally inhumane?

Our president’s first major action as commander-in-chief was to order
unsuccessful surgical strikes, sent from a sterile and long-range distance,
to murder Hussein and some of his closest political associates. Isn’t this equally brutal and despicable?

In the past several days, our leaders have heaped derision on
Hussein’ s military for using guerilla warfare – as if such tactics
are immoral or unprofessional.

We’ve already forced Hussein to give up many of his most effective
weapons through the weapons inspections that our leaders knew
would not stop the war from taking place.

What choice did we leave Hussein and his forces, other than trickery,
guerilla warfare, and street fighting?

What military and defense tactics would we use
if we were protecting ourselves from invaders
having such a disproportionate amount of high-
tech weaponry?

For several years, we have been alerted to the presence of “weapons of mass destruction” that are reportedly being developed or stockpiled by other governments, particularly by Hussein and North Korea. We have repeatedly been advised that this was the primary reason why our military must wage a war against Hussein’s regime. And yet, our president withholds the critical information that the U.S. government directly aided Hussein’s government, in the 1980s, in procuring biochemical weaponry. It came from us; and yet, because Hussein has such weapons, he and his administration are evil. And although it came from us, and although we continue to stockpile huge amounts of our own, we are good. This kind of illogical mental reversal is on par with Lewis Carroll’s Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Before the war began, our president, Colin Powell, and other high-ranking officials tried to convince
us and the rest of the world that they wanted peace and really, really wanted to cooperate with the
UN. Then the President claimed that diplomatic efforts with the U.N. didn’t work. Perhaps he and
his administration never intended it to work. According to a 3/19/03 editorial in the Chattanooga Times/Free Press, “The Bush administration apparently also will pursue an audacious and
provocative plan for rebuilding Iraq, again shunning U.N. and traditional relief agencies – this time
in favor of privately bid-and-awarded U.S. contracts to for-profit U.S. companies.
The plan, revealed through confidential contract documents outlined in an exclusive Wall Street
Journal report … further confirms that the administration planned the Iraqi overthrow months ago, underscoring the notion that the U.N. process was doomed from the start … One big winner,
according to the Journal’s report, is the Kellogg, Brown and Root subsidiary of Halliburton, Vice President Dick Cheney’s former company.
Of the $1.5 billion in contracts for Iraqi work now offered to private U.S. companies, just $50
million has been carved out so far for groups such as CARE and Save the Children” (B8).

Some of my “right-wing” friends living in Chattanooga
religiously parrot Fox News and Rush Limbaugh.

In the past couple of days, they’ve begun to express their moral outrage that other countries that
had opposed the war, such as France and Germany, are offering their services in the rebuilding
of Iraq. “They didn’t support us, so to hell with them – we don’ t need their help.” I respect my
friends’ right to believe what they are being told, but I also have to wonder if perhaps the public
is being encouraged to feel this way because certain U.S. corporations want to carve up the
golden goose for their own private gain.

The media, and certain officials in the current administration, initially indicated
that the war in Iraq would end quickly.

This encouraged many people to feel better about not opposing it.

But now, our president states that the war
will continue for “however long it takes.”

It seems that the administration expects
us to agree to whatever it tells us, without argument.
And just in case any of us do want to argue against the war, the President tells us
that the war is now about “freeing the Iraqi people.” In other words, anyone who openly expresses their opposition to the war is now is opposed to our freeing an oppressed population. Shame on us!

recently expressed a radical thought to my husband, a retired Army
sergeant major and veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. The thought
bothers him considerably: “Why is it right and just for the United States to
stockpile weapons of mass destruction (biochemical agents and nuclear materials), and yet it is not right for smaller countries like Iraq and North Korea to do so?

And who really has the moral authority to decide which
administration is ‘evil’ and which is not?

Is it not evil to attempt to cold-bloodedly murder a group
of politicians after taking away a large portion of their
ability to defend themselves against us?”

The more he thinks about what these issues, the less he can answer me.
We’re both troubled, now – because we’re coming out of our media-induced, brainwashed trance
states and are beginning to regain our use of critical thinking.

What our administration doesn’t want the U.S. public to recognize is that we are being terrorized
on a near-daily basis – not by perceived enemies operating outside the States, but by our government.

How? It issues one terror alert after another, playing the color (alert status) game, keeping us in
a constant state of fear. We are kept on the edge of our seats, waiting for the first biochemical
or nuclear attack to occur. What do the alerts and warnings do to our state of mind?

First, they generate a layer of anger hidden beneath the fear.

We are angry because we don’t want to be aroused from our sense of safety and security!

And then the administration tells us where to direct our anger – onto the “enemies” we are
now warring against – even though there has been no substantial proof that the Iraqis were in any
way connected to the 9-11 attacks!

(And yet, a surprising number of letters to the editor state that we must go after the Iraqi terrorists
who attacked us.)

Another thought: even if some of the alerts are factually based and intervention took place before
the attacks occurred, would such attempts have been as likely to occur if our administration hadn’t
chosen to invade Iraq, thereby angering so many terrorist groups and governments that perhaps had,
until now, still given us some benefit of the doubt?

Our president, Rumsfeld, and other officials have worked hard to try to convince us that Hussein
is a brutal dictator, that he is evil incarnate, that he is a murderer.

Although much of this may be true, they omit information that is more factually based: that our own
government has secretly been sending captured terrorists to other countries to be brutally tortured
and interrogated.

Further, we haven’t been told that several of them died as a direct result of the interrogations.

Our country may appear pristine and freedom-
loving and democratic on the surface, but for some unfortunate citizens, it is as much a torturous and brutal regime as Hussein’s. Many American survivors
of mentally controlled slavery, sponsored especially by the CIA (of which our president’s father was a director), can tell you that many of the same atrocities
that our president says have been committed by
Iraq’s government, particularly towards the Kurds,
have also been committed against US citizens and
military personnel by our government.

These crimes against humanity include biochemical experimentation, torture,
false imprisonment, terror tactics, being mentally broken and forced to commit
crimes against our will, and manslaughter – if not outright murder.
As long as our government influences us to look outward at other governments and the atrocities they commit, we are unlikely to take a long, hard look at what employees working
within our own federal government and agencies have perpetrated against US citizens – including young children.

(The CIA and other involved federal agencies have denied, and will continue to deny, the survivors’
claims. Their response should be expected; most accused criminals don’t throw their hands up in the
air and say, “Hey, I did it – please punish me!”)
I wonder if perhaps our president is unconsciously displacing his fear and hatred of a former U.S.
dictator onto Saddam Hussein. I wonder if he is being skillfully and psychologically manipulated into
waging war against Iraq by his father’s former advisors and associates, perhaps for their own
eventual financial gain. This is one of many questions that might be answered, at least in part, after
the war is over and the sand settles.
I fully empathize with those of you who feel a need to believe that our current Administration –
including our president, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Powell, are telling us the truth from beginning to
end.

It is human to want to see our government, and Great Britain’s as the good guys wearing white
Stetson hats. We don’t want to consider the possibility that the government of our perceived
enemies is no more “evil” than our own. Knowledge of our need to feel good about ourselves
may be the primary reason why our current administration constantly heaps negative labels,
based on purely emotional standards, onto our perceived enemies.

It’s nearly impossible to argue against such emotion, or to rein it in and help it to transition back
into logic and critical thinking. And heaven only knows how many people are displacing their own
anger against bad guys from their personal past, onto Hussein!

Until this war is over, most people are going to stay glued to their television screens, emotionally
frozen by fear (of being attacked) and fueled by aggressive anger (towards our perceived
enemies). Staying emotional unfortunately keeps us from tapping into the part of our brains that
enable us to use critical thinking, and to question and logically analyze what our leaders tell us.
I have a dream. In it, our government and the public at large will choose painful honesty over
group delusion. We will take a close look at our government’s many hidden crimes and blatant
flaws, and choose to fix it (instead of trying to “fix” the flaws of other governments.) Admitting
our own government’s nasty flaws in public takes much more courage than diverting attention
away from it and onto the nasty flaws of other governments. My prayer is that, despite his
understandable loyalty to his father, our current president will find the courage to do what is right
and honorable. And if not, I pray that a future administration will.

Mr. Pearson's informaion and analysis are sober and sobering for any whose current
world view is shaped primarily by our allegedly free press. But he has far greater faith
than I have in the activism of Americans, in any significant numbers, once they have
been pushed too far. The question, I suppose, is how far is too far. We haven't yet seen
the limit. You can push a junky  off the roof of a tenement with no resistance.

Americans are likewise drugged -- fat and apathetic -- the "bewldered herd,"  as they
were called by the Creel Commission in the 1920s, which deemed them intellectually
unfit to wield the power of democracy and therefore in need of management by the ruling
 elete.
While there has been a deliberate dumbing down of the American people, especially in
the realm of politics, it's our general apathy rather than an innate lack of intelligence
that makes us unfit. And that is not likely to change; the elete's skill at manufacturing
concent has worked well for nearly eighty years now. Propaganda has hardened into
popular history and national mythology, and both have helped to shape the strange
perspective of the American people that is today surreally out of touch with the reality the
 rest of the world perceives.

I commented to someone recently that the united states was "poised on the
edge of something". this person then called me a "dreamer" after i expressed
my belief that "something" might be "completely the opposite" of the
"fascism" he had offered as a possibility. this person may well have been
right: later that same day, i bet a three-figure sum that president bush
will be defeated in the 2004 elections. it dawned on me later on that these
opinions are in need of some explanation. i see no reason you should take me
seriously. first there's the question of how useful speculation about the
future really is, even when historically grounded. then there's the
probability that i'm just rationalizing my natural optimism. you've been
warned.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, the United States found itself in
a position of strength with no parallels in world history before or since.
The country was essentially unscathed and its war economy was booming,
whereas all other industrial powers were in shambles. Post-war planners
immediately took steps to make this state of affairs a permanent one by
creating a world order in which political and economic incentives were
aligned with U.S. interests. The Cold War was used to justify a
defense-centered domestic agenda, which would allow the U.S. to maintain
access for its industries to foreign resources and markets.

The 1989 demise of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact at once removed a
potent U.S. asset and opened up new possibilities. On the one hand, Soviet
aggression could no longer be invoked as a justification for U.S. dominance;
but on the other, substantial new resources and markets, previously trapped
behind the iron curtain, became available. In the meantime, powerful
economic blocs had developed in Europe and Japan and had been harnessed in
the "trilateral" management the world's economic affairs since the 1970s,
with the understanding that important policy decisions were the prerogative
of the United States. In the 1990s, this arrangement became the preferred
method of imposing the dominance of U.S. capital, through what are called
"free trade agreements", under which developing countries agree to open
their borders to inflows and outflows of goods and capital, with rhetorical
reciprocity from the trilateral areas.

Successful independent development outside of the U.S. framework has always
been seen as a threat to be forestalled or reversed, because it might be
emulated. A report to President Kennedy warned him of the danger of "the
Castro idea of taking matters into one's own hands", because "the
distribution of land and other forms of national wealth greatly favors the
propertied classes" and "the poor and underprivileged, stimulated by the
example of the Cuban revolution, are now demanding opportunities for a
decent living", unacceptably challenging the right to profit. The reasoning
had been no different fifteen years earlier: U.S. interests were aligned
with those of the "propertied classes". They have remained so to this day.

But the change in method did require an increase in international
cooperation: the removal of the Soviet threat placed second-tier powers in
direct competition with the United States, and their presence on the
international scene could no longer be ignored. The struggles of "the poor
and underprivileged" who are "demanding opportunities for a decent living"
was now under collective management, again with the understanding that the
U.S. is first among equals. U.S. domination now relied more than ever on
Theodore Roosevelt's dictum that one must "Speak softly and carry a big
stick", because too much reliance on the "big stick" at the expense of
"speaking softly" might sow discord in the ranks of the managers, and open
up space for the underclasses to press their demands.

This dilution of U.S. power is correctly perceived in establishment circles.
For instance, in 2000, the National Intelligence Council released a report
called "Global Trends 2015", a "constructive dialogue about the future"
between the intelligence community and outside experts. After a lengthy
discussion, four "alternative global futures", each "plausible" and
"policy-relevant", are proposed. In all of them, "US global influence
wanes."

In its 2000 report called "Rebuilding America's Defenses", the Project for a
New American Century, locates this challenge to "the exercise of American
leadership around the globe" in "the decline in the strength of America's
defenses". The report's authors fondly recall the 1992 Defense Policy
Guidance, a "blueprint for maintaining U.S. preeminence, precluding the rise
of a great power rival, and shaping the international security order in line
with American principles and interests." Sadly, the document was "Leaked
before it had been formally approved", caused an outrage, and was abandoned
by the incoming Clinton Administration. The "basic tenets" of the DPG,
however, "remain sound", and the purpose of the report is to reiterate them.

The PNAC report, for its part, bears an uncanny resemblance to the National
Security Strategy released by the Bush Administration in September 2002. Of
note is the fact that the first Bush's Secretary of Defense, who
commissioned the DPG, and his Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, who
authored the document, respectively occupy the offices of Vice-President and
Deputy Secretary of Defense in the current administration.

It is by now no secret that an attack on Iraq played a pivotal role in the
strategy envisioned by the PNAC. A 1998 letter to President Clinton urged
him to "enunciate a new strategy that would secure the U.S. and our friends
and allies around the world", which strategy "should aim, above all, at the
removal of Saddam Hussein's regime from power" so that we can "protect our
interests in the Gulf". It does not matters if our friends and allies cannot
see the wisdom in this course of action: we know where their best interests
lie, and "In any case, American policy cannot continue to be crippled by a
misguided insistence on unanimity in the UN Security Council." The letter is
signed by a who's who of current officials and advisors: Elliott Abrams and
Zalmay Khalilzad at the National Security Council; Richard Armitage and John
Bolton at the Department of State; Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and
Richard Perle at the Department of Defense; Robert Zoellick the U.S. Trade
Representative; and academics/commentators Francis Fukuyama, Robert Kagan
and William Kristol.

The "interests in the Gulf" are hardly new. In 1980, President Carter
asserted his "doctrine" that "An attempt by an outside force to gain control
of the Persian Gulf region will be regarded as an assault on the vital
interests of the United States of America, and such an assault will be
repelled by any means necessary, including military force." In the 1940s, a
State Department report famously observed that the Middle East is "A
stupendous source of strategic power and the greatest material prize in
world history." It just so happens that the European and Northeast Asian
(Japanese, Chinese and South Korean) economies are disproportionately
dependent on Persian Gulf oil, and that these regions are the ones whose
power relative to the U.S. is increasing.

Thus the Bush Administration's doctrine of unilateral "pre-emption" is meant
to reassert the nation's unimpeded dominance of world affairs and sideline
the countries that, through the 1990s, were helping to manage the discontent
of "the poor and underprivileged". Not surprisingly, discord in the ranks is
exactly what the policies have managed to sow, and the marginalized sectors
of the world's societies are beginning to seize the moment. This is most
evident in Latin America. The Andean countries have been paralyzed by
popular uprisings; Bolivians overthrew their president. In Colombia,
President Uribe's U.S.-friendly approach has been rebuked by the electorate,
which recently defeated a referendum on fiscal reform, and elected a leftist
as mayor of Bogota. Argentinians have found a president who, so far, seems
willing to defy the international financial institutions that savaged the
country. The President of Brazil was carried to power by his Workers' Party
and a movement of landless peasants. Brazil also led an alliance of
developing countries that soundly defeated the "free trade" agenda in Cancun
last September. This in a part of the world to which the U.S. has laid claim
since President Monroe's 1823 address to Congress.

To compound the problem, the Administration has badly misjudged the
consequences of its attack on Iraq. There, the U.S. is lacking in both human
and capital resources. Human resources in the form of soldiers from other
countries have not been forthcoming: even in the least democratic countries,
popular sentiment has so far been enough to prevent leaders from acquiescing
to U.S. demands in significant ways. Far from being irrelevant, the United
Nations remains the only forum within which legitimacy on the international
stage is decided, in the eyes of world popular opinion.

Stiff resistance has compelled the activation of tens of thousands of
reservists, nearly half of which now plan not to reenlist, if a recent poll
by Stars & Stripes, the Army newspaper, is to be believed. Volunteer
service members suffer from the same affliction. The occupation of Iraq is
draining the military to the point that the U.S. is incapable of meeting any
other military challenge without pulling forces away from their current
duties in Iraq or on strategically positioned bases around the globe. A
recent nuclear inspections deal brokered between the European Union and
much-needed boogey-country Iran underscores the unacceptable degree of
freedom available to vassals as a result of this impotence. The crisis is
grave enough that the Administration recently posted on its
defendamerica.mil website a notice requesting applications to local
Selective Service System boards, prompting comments that a reinstatement of
the draft was being considered. The notice was pulled down on Friday,
following White House denials. The imperial project is starved for troops.

The problem of capital is more complicated. Even if other countries decline
to fund the occupation of Iraq directly, they will indirectly contribute to
it by financing the U.S. deficit. But this source of funds will dry up as
the world loses confidence in the U.S.' ability to pay its debts. Domestic
funds will then have to be found within the federal budget, in popular but
cash-strapped programs like Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security, and
education, and be reapportioned to the occupation.

Worse, these increased demands on the U.S. population arise as the campaign
of deception waged by the Bush Administration to sell its war is being
revealed in the media, agonizingly slowly for those who have been following
the matter closely. The magnitude of the deception was such that journalists
and editors, whose credibility rests on the quality of the official
propaganda they willingly relay and amplify, are finding themselves
obligated to point out many of the Administration's grosser distortions and
abuses. Bush's shredding of the Bill of Rights and pandering to corporate
interests in both foreign and domestic policy are increasingly finding a
home in the major media, who are themselves targeted by a successful popular
revolt against ownership concentration. Appeasing the population provides a
strong incentive for the media's rediscovery of the public interest they are
mandated to serve.

As the President's popularity flags, he finds himself forced to appeal to
his natural constituency of corporate interests (by rolling back
environmental protections) and religious fundamentalists (by banning
late-term abortions), further alienating mainstream opinion.

The Bush Administration's policies have created a global climate that
squeezes the country into a shape it will not keep. So the country finds
itself poised on the edge of a significant popular counterattack, a
democratic pushback of a magnitude perhaps not seen since the Nixon
administration, aided by the public interest groups that were created in
that era. What must be understood, and is certainly understood in elite
sectors, is that the current structure of society and its current
distribution of power cannot meet the demands of a roused population: "the
distribution of land and other forms of national wealth" are in direct
competition with people who are "demanding opportunities for a decent
living". Not just in Latin America, about which those remarks were made, but
also in the United States.

That elite circles understand this fact can be seen in their reaction to the
democratic upsurge of the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1975, the
Trilateral Commission released a report on the "governability of
democracies" in the United States, Europe and Japan. Regarding the U.S., the
report established that Presidential candidates must form an "electoral
coalition" of "key categorical groups" of various "economic, regional,
ethnic, racial and religious" backgrounds. (p.96) But this coalition "need
have little relation" to the elected President's "governing coalition",
(p.97) which "during the decades after World War II", was made up of "key
individuals and groups in the Executive Office, the federal bureaucracy,
Congress, and the more important businesses, banks, law firms, foundations,
and media". (p.92) Not surprisingly, these individuals and groups are
extremely well represented in the Commission's membership. The problem in
that period was that a fit of "creedal passion" among the population led to
"the challenging of established authority and to major efforts to change
governmental structure to accord more fully" with the "liberal, democratic,
egalitarian values" on which "American society" shares a "broad consensus".
(p.112) This constituted an "excess of democracy", whereas what is needed is
"a greater degree of moderation in democracy",(p.113) because "the arenas
where democratic procedures are appropriate are [...] limited", and "the
effective operation of a democratic political system usually requires some
measure of apathy and noninvolvement on the part of individuals and groups."
(p.114) In other words, the "governing coalition" is the appropriate
repository of democracy, while everyone else can return to their
"middle-class values, attitudes, and consumption patterns." (p.157) This was
the "Crisis of Democracy" after which the report is named.

My argument is that the Bush Administration is governing in a way that
threatens to bring about another such crisis, and the "governing coalition"
is split on what to do about it. Some sectors, among which those that have
benefited substantially from the largesse of the Administration, line up
behind Bush, and seem to believe that the coming crisis can be managed by
vesting more power in the hands of the executive, altering "governmental
structure" but in the right direction. I suppose this would be the "fascism"
that one of my interlocutors foresaw, although a (small-r) republican facade
would in all likelihood be maintained. Other sectors believe that the crisis
must be avoided, which means that Bush must be sent packing, and something
resembling the prior status quo restored. This includes restoring
cooperation among the economic powers to manage global discontent and
relieve domestic pressure in the U.S. The schism in the "governing
coalition" accounts for the relatively broad range of opinion that we find
these days in the media, throughout which two assumptions are invariably
shared: elites must control the democratic process in the U.S., and U.S.
global hegemony (called "American exceptionalism" in the current Economist,
with unintended humorous effect) is desirable. Both factions agree on the
ends to be achieved, but the means are being debated.

My personal feeling is that the pro-Bush path has consequences that are
unpalatable except among the most reactionary, who may feel that the most
totalitarian institutions in society, corporations, are a proper model for
society as a whole. The greater the intensity of popular discontent, the
more unpalatable this path becomes, because of the brutality that would have
to be used to repress the "liberal, democratic, egalitarian" tendencies of
the population. After all, "democratic procedures are appropriate" in at
least some "arenas". What this means is that the elites can be made to line
up against Bush if the stakes of a second Bush term are raised by the
continuation of current trends in foreign and domestic popular resistance to
the Bush agenda. If elite pressure is sufficient, the 2004 election will be
carried by the Democrat.

The worst thing we can do is wallow in "apathy and noninvolvment"; this is
true in general, but especially now. If elites are confident that there is
no crisis in the offing, or a minor one, they will conclude that they might
as well stick with Bush and get showered with the wealth that others are
generating. The good news is that much is already being done, thanks to
tireless work by millions of people around the world, often in
life-threatening conditions. Our part is to assume the responsibility that
accrues with our considerable privileges, like freedom and security from
harm. We have to make sure that the elites are scared their power will be
diluted or taken away. Each of us has to decide how to contribute to this
effort, but it's worth hijacking something Thomas Friedman said (according
to his colleague Paul Krugman) to remind ourselves that the Bush
Administration, as well as the current situation, provides a "target-rich
environment".

Beyond that we have to recognize that Bush's defeat is not a victory.
Supposing I'm right about anything, the game the elites are playing will in
fact result in a significant disinvolvment on the part of the population.
The real challenge lies in sustaining mobilization, and preferably
increasing it. Cultivating the awareness that the present structure of
governance is incompatible with a "decent living" for all is probably a
large part of the solution, as is building the confidence that alternative
institutions can be created.

I should perhaps conclude by saying that the Bush Administration is aware of
all of this, and is not idle. Right now a large share of attention is given
to recent reports of economic growth (shared in the usual proportions) and
job creation (still below anticipated levels). These short-term political
gains, generated by tax cuts that are disastrous in every respect, are sure
to be exploited to their fullest. Lastly we should not discount the
possibility that some manufactured national security crisis will make it
past the Administration's damaged credibility. I suppose I have a
three-figure sum riding in that saddle.

Anyway, if thinking along these lines makes me a "dreamer", I sure hope I'm
not the only one.
Please enlighten yourselves by the work of Walter Burien, regarding the financial tricks of your
government. Legitimately, the government can lay and collect taxes, but not stash surplus
funds in order to keep increasing taxes. Gov. Jesse Ventura returned to the citizens of
Minnesota, $ 3 Billion in surplus funds that were about to disappear forever. If he can do it .. so
can the rest of them. Refer to:http://www.cafrman.com

At the Asia Times, Christopher Horton really does a fine job of outlining just how bad it is now and
how much worse it's likely to get in the future. One of the most striking sections of his report begins,
"Making things worse is the recent cancellation of school for Beijing's 1.7 million students, which
has prompted a massive train and bus exodus out of the SARS-ravaged capital by students and
migrant workers." He then goes on to describe the standard Chinese train, it's lack of sanitation,
and the simple fact that, "If just one person infected with SARS is on any of the countless trains now
leaving Beijing, these trains could significantly increase the speed of the spread of SARS
throughout China's interior." Mr Horton is clearly British in background. His report is understated,
but much more powerful as a result.

By the way, if you read that article you will see that trains are not Horton's core concern. His real
worry is for China's AIDS victims, another health crisis just "discovered" recently by the Chinese
government. With their weakened immune systems, they'll die much more easily than others.
That could raise the fatality totals from the hundreds to the hundreds of thousands all by itself.
The impact on the economy and psychology of China would be staggering.

The Harriman-Walker Union Banking Corp. arrangements for the German Steel
Trust had made them bankers for Flick and his vast operations in Germany by
no later than 1926.

The Harriman Fifteen Corporation (George Walker, president, Prescott Bush
and Averell Harriman, sole directors) held a substantial stake in the Silesian
Holding Co. at the time of the merger with Brown Brothers, Jan. 1, 1931.
This holding correlated to Averell Harriman's chairmanship of the Consolidated
Silesian Steel Corporation, the American group owning one-third of a complex
of steel-making, coal-mining and zinc-mining activities in Germany and Poland,
in which Friedrich Flick owned two-thirds..

The Nuremberg prosecutor characterized Flick as follows:
`` Proprietor and head of a large group of industrial enterprises (coal and iron
mines, steel producing and fabricating plants) ... `Wehrwirtschaftsfuh@aurer',
1938 [title awarded to prominent industrialists for merit in armaments drive--
`Military Economy Leader'].... '

For this buildup of the Hitler war machine with coal, steel and arms production,
using slave laborers, the Nazi Flick was condemned to seven years in prison at
the Nuremberg trials; he served three years. With friends in New York and
London, however, Flick lived into the 1970s and died a billionaire.

AD ASTRA, EVERYMAN!
Everyone wants to go to space. Brian Walker—toy inventor, lifelong gadgeteer and one-time total failure—is doing something about it.

Beyond demystifying space travel, is there
any philosophical point that you’d like people
to take away from your work?

First of all, there’s the very fact that I’m doing something that people believe
to be impossible. One of the things I hope to prove is that a person is only
limited by the limits they put on themselves. I haven’t ever listened to the
people who’ve said, no, you can’t do that, you can’t do this. When I was 30
and moving back in with my parents because I’d failed at the submarine
project, or when I was 33 and moving back in with my folks because I’d
failed at another project, people tended to look at me as someone who would
never accomplish anything. Well, I have a life now that those same people
wouldn’t believe. Not only am I financially independent, I’m building a rocket.
I want people to come away with the feeling that if the rocket guy can build a
rocket, their dream of owning a dry-cleaners, or whatever, isn’t impossible.

Not the real Santa?
by Ted Olsen, former assistant editor of Christian History December 6 marks Saint Nicholas
Day, and I thought I'd mark  the beginning of the Christmas season by telling the story of
Santa Claus's namesake. But before I do, I should remark that, historically speaking, there's not much we really know about Nicholas. Though he's one of the most popular saints in theGreek
and Latin churches, his existence isn't attested by anyhistorical document. All we can say is that
he was probably thebishop of Myra (near modern Finike, Turkey) sometime in the 300s.

That said, there are of course many legends about Nicholas, and since these have influenced people throughout history, and they likely illustrate something about the historical man, they
are fair game for a publication, like ours, devoted to Christian history.

Supposedly, Nicholas was born to a wealthy family in Patara,
Lycia. His parents died, and he inherited a considerable sum of
money, but he kept none of it. In the most famous story about
his life, he threw bags of gold through the windows of three girls
about to be forced into lives of prostitution.

At least that's the most common version of the story; there are
others, including an excessively grim one where the three girls
are beheaded by an innkeeper and pickled in a tub of brine until
Nicholas resurrects them.

After a couple of miracles (he's sometimes called Nicholas the
Wonder-Worker) performed while he was still a boy, Nicholas
was chosen by the people of Myra to be their new bishop. But it
wasn't long before Diocletian and Maximian began their
persecutions of Christians, and the new bishop was imprisoned.

When Constantine became emperor, Nicholas was released
with countless others and returned to his preaching only to find a
new threat: Arianism. According to one biographer (writing five
centuries after Nicholas's death), "Thanks to the teaching of
St.Nicholas, the metropolis of Myra alone was untouched by the
filth of the Arian heresy, which it firmly rejected as a death-dealing
 poison."
Other biographers claim Nicholas attacked the heresy of Arius
(who denied the full divinity of Christ) [ The Trinity ED] in a much
more personal way he traveled to the Council of Nicea and slapped
Arius in the face!
As the story goes (and this should be taken as fantasy because
there are pretty good records of the council, and Nicholas isn't
mentioned), the other bishops at Nicea were shocked at such
rude behavior and relieved him as bishop.

But then Jesus and Mary appeared next to him, and they quickly recanted.

That's the questionable legend of Nicholas. But not the end of the story.
Even by the reign of Justinian (d. 565), Nicholas was famous, and the
emperor dedicated a church in Constantinople to him. By the 900s, a Greek wrote, "The West as well as the East acclaims and glorifies him. Wherever
there are people, his name is revered and churches are built in his honor.
All Christians reverence his memory and call upon his protection."

The West became even more interested when his "relics" were taken from Myra to Bari, Italy,
on May 9, 1087. He's said to have been represented by medieval artists more frequently than
any saint but Mary, and nearly 400 churches were dedicated in  his honor in England alone
during the late Middle Ages.

With such a popularity, his legends inevitably became intertwined with others. In Germanic countries, it sometimes became hard to tell where the legend of Nicholas began and that of
Woden (or Odin) ended.

Somewhere along the line, probably tied to the gold-giving story, people began giving presents
in his name on his feast day. When the Reformation came along, his following disappeared in
all the Protestant countries except Holland, where his legend continued as Sinterklass.

Martin Luther, for example, replaced this bearer of gifts with the Christ Child, or, in German, Christkindl.

Over the years, that became repronounced Kriss Kringle, and ironically is now considered
another name for Santa Claus.

Total failure brings with it social isolation, the fear of knowing that no one could be
relied upon when the chips are down. I felt the raw fear of being disliked keenly at
this transitional stage of my life. Yet I was unable to recognise that this was a common
experience for boys. Instead I concentrated on developing shared interests with my
peers, to act as a shield against isolation. This search for similarity may explain the
phenomenon identified in Nick Homby's Fever Pitch - his account of his lifelong
obsession with Arsenal Football Club.

He distinguished the genders at this stage by the tendency for girls to develop personalities while boys developed obsessions. These obsessions are typically football, cricket, computer games or pop music. Knowledge of your chosen obsession creates dialogue with others and acts as a buffer against outsiders.

Hotep XPeter Clark USA

Man over the years has not considered the danger of throwing the earth out of balance by pumping billions of gallons of oil out
of the ground and mining billions of tons of coal and then converting these liquids and solids into gasses which are then made
a part of our atmosphere. The adding of so much heat and gas to the air around us has to affect the barometric pressure and
this in turn is (according to T. Marshall Eubanks, a researcher in the British journal NATURE) causing the earth to wobble like
an out of balance washing machine. It already has a two foot wobble at the poles and if it continues to get worse it could cause
the ocean tides to get very dangerous or even worse create a worldwide earthquake!

According to the records I have seen published: In the 100 year period (1868 to 1968) 200 billion barrels of oil were produced
around the world. But what I found most shocking was the use of 400 billion barrels of oil in only 20 years (1968 to 1988) and
the fact that a lot of this oil came from Iran. When you consider that each of these barrels contains 42 gallons and weighs
about 306 pounds you begin to get some idea of the tremendous amount of weight this totals up to. simply multiply 600 billion
by 306. If you want to know the heat factor multiply each barrel by 5.8 million BTUs. 8,000,000,000 barrels equals 1 quadrillion
BTUs (1 Quad) which is enough to run 10 million cars for one year. Also, for each gallon burned, 23 pounds of carbon dioxide is
produced!

A chart (#4) constructed using information taken out of a chart published by the Energy InformationAdministration shows how
we went from wood burning to nuclear power and how many Quads (Quadrillion BTUs) of energy will have been used between
1850 and the year 2000 and also how these  factors create earthquakes. Another chart (#5) shows another sad fact. In 1979
45 Quads of energy out of the 79 Quads used in the USA were lost because of poor efficiency in gasoline engines and steam
turbines used to produce electrical energy. Some of this energy was also lost in the power transmission lines.

This means that over 50% of our energy went out the
window– enough to run 450 million cars for one year!
In essence we can also picture a Quad as a measure of the amount of gas that has been released into the
atmosphere and this doesn't present a very pretty picture either from a weather effects point of view.

                                              SCIENTIFIC CONCERN OVER WEATHER
As far back as May 1966 scientists were expressing concern over weather conditions around the globe. Some were blaming
the (above ground) explosions of H-bombs by both the USA and Russia for causing the problem. An article in the May 1966
issue of Science And Mechanics by A.I. Schutzer accused the Russians of deliberately setting off 10 "dirty" H-bombs in 1961
and 270 megatons of H-bombs in 1962 near the Arctic Circle in order to improve their weather while making our US weather
worse.

Some of the bad weather examples given as a result of the bomb blasts were:

In 1965 4 inches of snow fell on England in August! The river Tiber in Rome was filled with ice chunks for
the first time in 500 years. The US weather was also bad- there was a drought in the North East while the
western deserts had torrential rains. The tornado rate had increased from an average 150 a year to 300
a year (last 1988 count about 900!). Meanwhile this author claimed the Russian weather had greatly
improved. They were having milder winters while their deserts were blooming with drenching rains. His
conclusion was that all our weather related problems should be blamed on the Russians. Most scientists
of that time disagreed with him.

Another magazine, Saga, in their May 1966 issue, also had a weather story by Peter Lamb
who also blamed the bomb for our weather problems but he put the blame on both the
American and Russian scientists. He cited the record concerning floods, tidal waves and
 avalanches around the world.

In the 51 years between 1896 and 1947 only 6 of these events were recorded in the record books,
but from1947 to 1965 (18 years) there are 12 such recorded incidents.

The hurricane record for 1900 to 1944 shows only 11 storms while from 1944 to 1965 (21 years)
13 hurricanes are recorded in half the previous time– an obvious increase.

Lamb concludes that the bad weather and SOME EARTHQUAKES are caused
by the H-bomb explosions and he is amazed that no official investigation is
being conducted to find out the truth of the matter.

If what these men concluded back in 1965 was true then the number of
earthquakes and number of tornadoes and hurricanes should have
decreased after above ground H-bomb testing was stopped several
years ago but, on the contrary, these weather and earthquake problems
have continued to grow and the human race is paying a terrible price in
 life and property.
.
Since the cause of the weather problem is not the bomb, then the only other cause has to be the burning
of these gigantic amounts of oil and other forms of fuel. Along with screwing up the weather, we are
throwing the earth out of balance by pumping so much oil out of areas too near to the high speed surface
of the equator and the burning of the oil along with coal, natural gas and wood products is affecting the
atmosphere by increasing (unevenly) the volume of gas which it comprises. We know that high pressure
ridges (high mountains of air) create dry weather while low pressure ridges (low valleys of air) create wet
weather. In order to show the dramatic change in barometer readings over the years, in 1987 when
hurricane "Hugo" came ashore on the east coast, the lowest barometer reading ever seen was recorded.
At the same time, in Alaska, the record setting high barometric reading was recorded; this caused
problems for the air traffic control towers as the barometric pressure was beyond the maximum on their
dial rendering them unable to give pilots the necessary accurate barometer readings to reset their
altimeters.

It is clear that no one ever expected to see such high readings, much less the barometer manufacturers.

The charts 4 and 5 can be used to show the correlation between the increase in oil production and the
increase in bad weather and earthquakes. Chart 4 very clearly shows how the increase in earthquakes
(especially in Iran and Turkey) has coincided with the increase in oil production. It should also be noted
that, since 1953 to 1985, Turkey and Iran have suffered a total of 11 major quakes. The previous 50 year
history shows nothing like it. I believe drilling oil wells near fault lines is an invitation to disaster as in the
case of Iran.

Still another problem man has not considered (which I feel is even more dangerous) is the melting of the
polar ice caps.

Scientists, who believe in man made global warming, feel that one of the most damaging results of this ice
pack melting will be the flooding of coastal regions as well as the submerging of low lying islands. These
scientists have failed to consider that earthquakes could also be triggered by the melt off– but how can
the melting of this Antarctic ice cap cause earthquakes?

In order to understand why this could already be happening, we must examine the composition of
Antarctica. According to certain published figures, Antarctica at the time had seven and one-half million
CUBIC MILES of ice. The tremendous weight of this ice has caused the land mass to sink down 2000 feet.
The displacement of this enormous land mass (5 ½ million square miles) has forced other parts of the earth
to rise up because of the "hydraulic" effects brought about by pressure on the inner molten interior of the
planet.
It has taken millions of years for the ice pack to grow and gradually increase these earth moving pressures
on the rest of the planet but, now, the ice pack is melting at what some consider to be an alarming rate
which is causing an average of 212 square miles of ice to slip into the West Antarctic sea each year. In
1987 about 4,500 miles of ice broke off (in two pieces which were 1,500 and 3,000 square miles) and in
1998 another 3,000 square miles broke off in one big piece and floated away. This weight change has to
affect the pressure on the tectonic plates and this undoubtedly is one of the causes of some of our
earthquake problems.

Seismologists say that a sudden earth displacement of ten to twenty feet can trigger a catastrophic
earthquake. What would happen if the sunken earth of the Antarctic region were to spring back up (even a
few hundred feet) after enough ice melts away? Could this trigger a worldwide earthquake? I believe it can
and this will happen sooner than people expect.

THE SOLUTION TO THIS DEADLY PROBLEM

We can close our eyes and hope the problem will go away,
or we can try to do something about it before we all get killed.

This problem is here and now and it THREATENS TO KILL THE ENTIRE HUMAN
RACE! World wide earthquakes can trigger volcanoes by cracking the earth's crust.

Under water volcanoes could poison the ocean waters and kill the fish.

The land volcanoes can poison all the air we breath and create unbearable heat.

Fear alone will end a lot of human and animal life.

I know the scientists in general won't buy this.

They are the ones that got us into the mess to began with.

They were the ones that said the car would never endanger our lives with air pollution,
They told us the pesticide DDT would never harm the oceans, they told us nuclear
power would be so cheap that electric meters would not be needed, that nuclear
power was completely safe.

They were the ones we trusted to make sure things would never get out of hand.

Why haven't they been able to see some of the things I've uncovered and told about in this article?
Why are they so blind?

The reason they are blind is because of their pride and arrogance which has destroyed
THEIR COMMON SENSE.

Failure to see truth in these very dangerous times in too many cases spells misery and death,
and science and technology has given mankind an extra dose of that because of their
carelessness and recklessness.

It is time to listen to other people who really care...

                    19 September 2001

Israel's military intelligence service, Aman, suspects that Iraq
is the state that sponsored the suicide attacks on the New York
Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington. Directing the
mission, Aman officers believe, were two of the world's foremost
terrorist masterminds: the Lebanese Imad Mughniyeh, head of
the special overseas operations for Hizbullah, and the Egyptian
Dr Ayman Al Zawahiri, senior member of Al-Qaeda and possible successor of the ailing Osama Bin Laden.

The two men have not been seen for some time. Mughniyeh is probably
the world's most wanted outlaw. Unconfirmed reports in Beirut say he has
undergone plastic surgery and is unrecognisable. Zawahiri is thought to
be based in Egypt. He could be Bin Laden's chief representative outside
Afghanistan.

The Iraqis, who for several years paid smaller groups to do their dirty
work, were quick to discover the advantages of Al-Qaeda. The Israeli
sources claim that for the past two years Iraqi intelligence officers were
shuttling between Baghdad and Afghanistan, meeting with Ayman Al
Zawahiri. According to the sources, one of the Iraqi intelligence officers,
Salah Suleiman, was captured last October by the Pakistanis near the
border with Afghanistan. The Iraqis are also reported to have established
strong ties with Imad Mughniyeh.

"We've only got scraps of information, not the full picture," admits one
intelligence source, "but it was good enough for us to send a warning six
weeks ago to our allies that an unprecedented massive terror attack was
expected. One of our indications suggested that Imad Mughniyeh met with
some of his dormant agents on secret trips to Germany. We believe that the
operational brains behind the New-York attack were Mughniyeh and Zawahiri,
who were probably financed and got some logistical support from the Iraqi
Intelligence Service (SSO)."

Mughniyeh was the only one believed to have tried it before. On April 12th
1997, he was reported to be only two hours away from achieving the highest
goal of any terrorist organisation (until last week): blowing up an Israeli
El-Al airliner above Tel Aviv. A man carrying a forged British passport with
the name Andrew Jonathan Neumann was in a Jerusalem hotel preparing a
bomb he was supposed to take on board an El-Al flight leaving Israel, when
it accidentally went off. Andrew Jonathan Neumann was very badly injured
but strong enough to reveal later to the Israelis that he was not British
but Lebanese, and that his operation was supposed to be a special "gift"  to
Israel from Imad Mughniyeh.
SheikhMuhammad Hussein Fadlallah. Seventy-five people were killed.
'A psychopath'

"Bin Laden is a schoolboy in comparison with
Mughniyeh," says an Israeli who knows Mughniyeh .

"The guy is a genius, someone who refined the art
of terrorism to its utmost level. We studied him and
reached the conclusion that he is a clinical psychopath
motivated by uncontrollable psychological reasons,
which we have given up trying to understand.
The killing of his two brothers by the Americans only inflamed his strong motivation."

Experts on Iraq and Saddam Hussein also believe that Iraq was the state
behind the two terror masterminds. "In recent months, there was a change,
and Iraq decided to get into the terror business. On July 7th, they tried
for the first time to send a suicide bomber, trained in Baghdad, to blow up
Tel Aviv airport  (Foreign Report No. 2651)."

Our sources believe that it will be very difficult to get to the bottom of
this unprecedented terror operation. However, they believe the chief of the
Iraqi SSO is Qusai Hussein, the dictator's son, and his organisation is the
most likely to have been involved.

Mughniyeh, 48, is a "sick man", says an intelligence officer who was in
charge of his file. He is considered by Western intelligence agencies as
the most dangerous active terrorist today.
He is wanted by several governments and the Americans have put a $2m reward
on his head.

[Detailed list of Mughniyeh operations removed for Non-Subscriber Extract]

It was the assassination of one man in March 1984 that is said to have made
Mughniyeh the CIA's most wanted terrorist. Mughniyeh allegedly kidnapped
the head of the CIA station in Beirut, William Buckley. The kidnapping
triggered what later became known as 'Irangate', when the Americans tried
to exchange Buckley (and others) with arms for Iran. However, the attempt
ended in a fiasco. By one unconfirmed account, Mughniyeh tortured and
killed Buckley with his own hands.

A year later, in a combined CIA / Mossad operation, a powerful
car bomb went off at the entrance to the house of Hizbullah's
 spiritual leader, SheikhMuhammad Hussein Fadlallah.
the Mossad, Mughniyeh hid in Iran.

[So now we are doing what the nazies and now the Isralies do...75 to one , now lets see 9-11 x 75 ED ]

In February 1992, Israeli helicopter gunships attacked the convoy of the
then-head of Hizbullah, Sheikh Abas Musawi, in South Lebanon.

Musawi, his wife and children were killed and the revenge attack followed
a month later. According to press reports, Mughniyeh was called back into
action and, in a well-planned and devastating attack, his people blew up the Israeli embassy in Argentina.

The building was demolished and 92 were killed. Only last year, after a long
investigation, did Argentina issue a warrant for Mughniyeh's arrest.

The reprisal for the attack in Argentina came in December 1994, when a car
bomb went off in a southern Shi'ite suburb of Beirut. Four people were killed.

One of them was called Mughniyeh, but to the deep disappointment of
those Israelis who planted the bomb it was the wrong one.

Mughniyeh's life was saved, but his other brother Fuad was
killed. Mughniyeh waited for his opportunity for revenge.

Our Israeli sources claim to see Mughniyeh's signature on the wreckage
in New York and Washington. How to counter this kind of terrorism?

"To fight these bastards you don't need a military attack," said an experienced
Israeli commando officer. "You only need to adopt Israel's assassination policy."

The psychology and development http://www.abelard.org/hitler/hitler.htm

“The idea of struggle is as old as life itself, for life is only preserved because
other living things perish through struggle. In this struggle, the stronger, the
more able, win, while the less able, the weak, lose. Struggle is the father of
 all things.

It is not by the principles of humanity that man lives or is able to preserve
himself above the animal world, but solely by means of the most brutal struggle.”

Fest, p.27 (Speech at Kulmbach on 5 February 1928, quoted in Hitler,
A Study in Tyranny) I include this quote as a typical exemplar of the mundane
nature of Adolph’s education and thinking.  There is a surfeit of such among
his words.
He also had strange ideas confusing ‘blood’ of a ‘nation’ with genetics.
Such confusions are still common among the ignorant.
Elsewhere, he said “I think I am one of the most musical people in the world”.

          Quote of the Week.

"Imagine that you could travel back in time to the year 1900.
Imagine that you stand on a soap box on a city street corner in 1900
and you say to the gathering crowd, "By 1955, people will be flying
at supersonic speeds in sleek aircraft and traveling coast to coast
      in just a few hours."

In 1900, it would have been insane to suggest that. In 1900,
airplanes did not even exist. Orville and Wilbur did not make the
first flight until 1903. The Model T Ford did not appear until 1909.

Yet, by 1947, Chuck Yeager flew the X1 at supersonic speeds. In
1954, the B-52 bomber made its maiden flight. It took only 51 years
to go from a rickety wooden airplane flying at 10 MPH, to a gigantic
aluminum jet-powered Stratofortress carrying 70,000 pounds of bombs
halfway around the world at 550 MPH. In 1958, Pan Am started
non-stop jet flights between New York and Paris in the Boeing 707.
In 1969, Americans set foot on the moon. It is unbelievable what
engineers and corporations can accomplish in 50 or 60 short years.

There were millions of people in 1900 who believed that humans would
never fly. They were completely wrong. However, I don't think anyone
in 1900 could imagine the B-52 happening in 54 years."

                                                    >From "Robotic Nation"
                                                        by Marshall Brain
Brought to our attention by reader David Schachter.

This quote is from an interesting paper that depicts a 'present and
future history' within which, by 2050, autonomous humanoid robots have
taken over most of the entry-level jobs of today.  But far from the
Jetsons' vision of a utopia full of enthusiastic perennial vacationers,
the robots have usurped most of the jobs, such as maids and other
cleaning personnel, fast food cooks and clerks, and the many other jobs
that don't require the spark of human creativity.  One result is that
50% of the U.S. workforce is then unemployed.

Marshall makes the economic necessity for businesses of that time to
follow this trend quite clear, similar to how businesses once all gave
up messengers for the telephone, horse-drawn delivery wagons for trucks,
and typewriters for computers -- competitive necessity.  At which point
he uses the quote above to help us understand why this possibility is
FAR from "absurd," even if it seems so from our viewpoint today, "50
  years in the past."

  Moore Perspective.

Along the way, Marshall also illuminates some of the results of Moore's
Law, such as through these excerpts:

"A processor in 2002 is 10,000 times faster than a processor in 1982
was. This trend has been in place for decades, and there is nothing
to indicate that it will slow down any time soon. Scientists and
engineers always get around the limitations that threaten Moore's
      law by developing new technologies."

"A 10 MEGAbyte hard disk cost about $1,000 in 1982. Today you can
buy a 250 GIGAbyte drive that is twice as fast for $350. Today's
drive is 25,000 times bigger and costs one-third the price of the
      1982 model..."

"In the same time period -- 1982 to 2002 -- standard RAM (Random
Access Memory) available in a home machine has gone from 64
KILObytes to 128 MEGAbytes -- it improved by of factor of 2,000."

"What if we simply extrapolate out, taking the idea that every 20
years things improve by a factor of 1,000 or 10,000? What we get is
a machine in 2020 that has a processor running at something like 10
trillion operations per second. It has a TERAbyte of RAM and one or
two PETAbytes of storage space (a petabyte is one quadrillion
      bytes)."

"What if we extrapolate ANOTHER 20 years after that, to 2040? A
typical home machine at that point will be 1,000 times faster than
the 2020 machine. Human brains are thought to be able to process at
a rate of approximately one quadrillion operations per second. A CPU
in the 2040 time frame could have the processing power of a human
brain, and it will cost $1,000. It will have a PETAbyte (one
quadrillion bytes) of RAM. It will have one EXAbyte of storage
space. An exabyte is 1,000 quadrillion bytes."

Although none of us have a clear picture of what 2050 will look like,
Marshall's reasoning (he presents additional supporting data in his
very hard to argue with -- consider the well-established history of many
technologies' double-exponential growth, and the just-now-beginning NBIC
Convergence (the coming together, and therefore synergistic growth, of
the previously separate fields of Nanotechnology, Biology & medicine,
  Information sciences, and Cognitive sciences)!

(If the POTENTIAL for such changes seems like so much poppycock --
please re-read the first three quoted paragraphs at the beginning of
  this article.)

The question, of course, if things develop as Marshall foretells, is how
our society might plan to effectively deal with another 50 years of such
exponential changes.  Especially considering that the dramatically-high
unemployment would be only the very tip of this particular iceberg...

Where the Violence Comes From

by Rabbi Michael Lerner    Editor, TIKKUN Magazine

There is never any justification for acts of terror against innocent civilians -- it is the quintessential act of dehumanization and not recognizing the sanctity of others, and a visible symbol of a world increasingly irrational and out of control.  It's understandable why many of us, after grieving and consoling the mourners, will feel anger--and while some demagogues
in  Congress have already sought to manipulate that feeling into a growing militarism (more spies, legalize assassinations
of foreign  leaders, increase the defense budget at the expense of domestic programs), the more "responsible" leaders
are seeking to narrow America's response to targeted attacks on countries that allegedly harbor the terrorists.

But though the perpetrators deserve to be punished, and I personally would be happy if all the people involved in this act
were to be imprisoned for the rest of their lives, in some ways this narrow focus allows us to avoid dealing with the underlying
issues. When violence becomes so prevalent throughout the planet, it's too easy to simply talk of "deranged minds."
We need to ask ourselves, "What is it in the way that we are living, organizing our societies, and treating each other that makes violence seem plausible to so many people?"
We in the spiritual world will see this as a growing global incapacity to recognize the spirit of God in each other--what we
call the sanctityof each human being.
But even if you reject religious language, you can see that the willingness of people to hurt each other to advance their own interests has become a global problem, and its only the dramatic level of this particular attack which distinguishes it from
the violence and insensitivity to each other that is part of our daily lives.

We may tell ourselves that the current violence has "nothing to do" with the way that we've learned to close
our ears when told that one out of every three people on this planet does not have enough food, and that one
 billion are literally starving.

We may reassure ourselves  that the hoarding of the world's resources by the richest society in world history, and our
frantic attempts to accelerate globalization with its attendant inequalities of wealth, has nothing to do with the resentment
that others feel toward us.

We may tell ourselves that the suffering of refugees
and the oppressed have nothing to do with  us --
that that's a different story that is going on somewhere
 else.
But we live in one world, increasingly interconnected with everyone, and
the forces that lead people to feel outrage, anger and  desperation eventually impact on our own daily lives.

The same inability to feel the pain of others is the pathology that shapes
 the minds of these terrorists.

Raise children in circumstances where no one is there to take care of them, or where
they must live by begging or selling their bodies in prostitution, put them in refugee camps and tell them that
that they have "no right of return" to their homes, treat them as though they are less valuable and deserving
of respect because they are part of some despised national or ethnic group, surround them with a media that extols the rich and makes everyone who is not economically successful and physically trim and conventionally
"beautiful" feel bad about themselves, offer them jobs whose sole goal is to enrich the "bottom line" of someone
else, and teach them that "looking out for number one" is the only thing and that anyone who believes in love
and social justice are merely naive idealists who are destined to always remain powerless, and you will produce
a world-wide populatio! n of people feeling depressed, angry, unable to care about others, and in various ways
dysfunctional.

Luckily most people don't act out in violent ways -- they tend to act out more against themselves,
drowning themselves in alcohol or drugs or personal despair. Others turn toward fundamentalist
religions or ultra-nationalist extremism.  Still others find themselves acting out against people that
they love, acting angry or hurtful toward children or relationship partners.

Most Americans will feel puzzled by any reference to this "larger
picture." It seems baffling to imagine that somehow we are part of
a world system which is slowly destroying the life support system
of the planet, and quickly transferring the wealth of the world into
our own pockets.

We don't feel personally responsible when an American corporation runs a sweat shop in the Philippines or
crushes efforts of workers to organize in Singapore.

We don't see ourselves implicated when the U.S. refuses to consider the plight of  Palestinian refugees or
uses the excuse of fighting drugs to support repression in Colombia or other parts of Central America.

We don't even see the symbolism when terrorists attack America's military center and
our trade center--we talk of them as buildings, though others see them as centers of the forces that are causing the world so much pain.

We have narrowed our own attention to "getting through" or "doing well" in our own personal lives, and who has time to focus on all the rest of this? Most of us are leading perfectly reasonable lives within the options that we have available to us -- so why should others be angry at us, much less strike out against us? And the truth is, our anger is also understandable: the striking out by others in acts of terror against us is just as irrational as the world-system that it seeks to confront. Yet our acts of counter-terror will also be counterproductive.

We should have learned from the current phase of the Israel-Palestinian struggle, responding to terror with more violence, rather than asking ourselves what we could do to change the conditions that generated it in
the first place, will only ensure more violence against us in the future.

This is a world out of touch with itself, filled with people who have forgotten how to recognize and respond
to the sacred in each other  because we are so used to looking at others from the standpoint of what they can
do for us, how we can use them toward our own ends.
The alternatives are stark: either start caring about the fate of everyone on this planet, or be prepared for a slippery slope toward violence  that will eventually dominate our daily lives.
We should pray for the victims and the families of those who have been hurt or murdered in these crazy
acts. We should also pray that  America does not return to "business as usual," but rather turns to a period of reflection, coming back into touch with our common
humanity, asking ourselves how our institutions can best embody our highest values. We may need a global day of atonement and repentance dedicated to finding a way to turn the direction of our society at every level,
a return to the notion that every human life is sacred, that "the bottom line" should be the creation of a world
of love and caring, and that the best way to prevent these kinds of acts is not to turn ourselves into a police state,
but turn ourselves into a society in which social justice, love, and compassion are so prevalent that violence becomes only a distant memory.

  Both saviour and victim

Black Hawk Down creates a new and dangerous
myth of American nationhood  George Monbiot
 Guardian Tuesday January 29, 2002

The more powerful a nation becomes, the more it asserts its
   victimhood.
In contemporary British eyes, the greatest atrocities
of the 18th and 19th centuries were those perpetrated on
compatriots in the Black Hole of Calcutta or during the Indian
mutiny and the siege of Khartoum.
The extreme manifestations of the white man's burden, these
events came to symbolise the barbarism and ingratitude of the
savage races the British had sought to rescue from their darkness.

Today the attack on New York is discussed as if it were the
worst thing to have happened to any nation in recent times. Few
would deny that it was a major atrocity, but we are required to
offer the American people a unique and exclusive sympathy.

Now that demand is being extended to earlier American losses.

Black Hawk Down looks set to become one of the bestselling
movies of all time. Like all the films the British-born director
Ridley Scott has made, it is gripping, intense and beautifully
  shot.

It is also a stunning misrepresentation
of what happened in Somalia.

In 1992 the United States walked into Somalia with good
intentions. George Bush senior announced that America had
come to do "God's work" in a nation devastated by clan warfare
and famine. But, as Scott Peterson's firsthand account Me
Against My Brother shows, the mission was doomed by
intelligence failures, partisan deployments and, ultimately, the
belief that you can bomb a nation into peace and prosperity.

Before the US government handed over the administration of
Somalia to the United Nations in 1993, it had already made
several fundamental mistakes. It had backed the clan chiefs
Mohamed Farah Aideed and Ali Mahdi against another warlord,
shoring up their power just as it had started to collapse. It had
failed to recognise that the competing clan chiefs were ready to
accept large-scale disarmament, if it were carried out
impartially. Far from resolving the conflict between the clans, the
  US accidentally enhanced it.

After the handover, the UN's Pakistani peacekeepers tried to
seize Aideed's radio station, which was broadcasting anti-UN
propaganda. The raid was bungled, and 25 of the soldiers were
killed by Aideed's supporters. A few days later, Pakistani troops
fired on an unarmed crowd, killing women and children. The
United Nations force, commanded by a US admiral, was drawn
into a blood feud with Aideed's militia.

As the feud escalated, US special forces were brought in to deal
with the man now described by American intelligence as "the
Hitler of Somalia". Aideed, who was certainly a ruthless and
dangerous man but also just one of several clan leaders
competing for power in the country, was blamed for all Somalia's
troubles. The UN's peacekeeping mission had been transformed
  into a partisan war.

The special forces, over-confident and hopelessly ill-informed,
raided, in quick succession, the headquarters of the UN
development programme, the charity World Concern and the
offices of Midecins sans Frontieres. They managed to capture,
among scores of innocent civilians and aid workers, the chief of
the UN's police force. But farce was soon repeated as tragedy.
When some of the most senior members of Aideed's clan
gathered in a building in Mogadishu to discuss a peace
agreement with the United Nations, the US forces, misinformed
as ever, blew them up, killing 54 people. Thus they succeeded
in making enemies of all the Somalis. The special forces were
harried by gunmen from all sides. In return, US troops in the UN
compound began firing missiles at residential areas.

So the raid on one of Aideed's buildings on October 3 1993,
which led to the destruction of two Black Hawk helicopters and
the deaths of 18 American soldiers, was just another round of
America's grudge match with the warlord. The troops who
captured Aideed's officials were attacked by everyone: gunmen
came even from the rival militias to avenge the deaths of the
civilians the Americans had killed. The US special forces, with
an understandable but ruthless regard for their own safety,
locked Somali women and children into the house in which they
  were besieged.

Ridley Scott says that he came to the project without politics,
which is what people often say when they subscribe to the
  dominant point of view.

The story he relates (with the help of the US department of defence and the former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff)
is the story the American people need to tell themselves.

The purpose of the raid on October 3, Black Hawk Down
suggests, was to prevent Aideed's murderous forces from
starving Somalia to death. No hint is given of the feuding
between him and the UN, other than the initial attack on the
Pakistani peacekeepers. There is no recognition that the worst
of the famine had passed, or that the US troops had long
ceased to be part of the solution. The US hostage-taking, even
the crucial role played by Malaysian soldiers in the Rangers'
rescue, have been excised from the record. Instead - and since
September 11 this has become a familiar theme - the attempt to
capture Aideed's lieutenants was a battle between good and evil,
  civilisation and barbarism.

The Somalis in Black Hawk Down speak only to condemn
themselves. They display no emotions other than greed and the
lust for blood. Their appearances are accompanied by sinister
Arab techno, while the US forces are trailed by violins, oboes
and vocals inspired by Enya. The American troops display
horrific wounds. They clutch photos of their loved ones and ask
to be remembered to their parents or their children as they die.
The Somalis drop like flies, killed cleanly, dispensable,
  unmourned.

Some people have compared Black Hawk Down to the British
film Zulu. There is some justice in the comparison, but the
Somalis here offer a far more compelling personification of evil
than the blundering, belligerent Zulus. They are sinister, deceitful
and inscrutable; more like the British caricature of the Chinese
  during the opium wars.

What we are witnessing in both Black Hawk Down and the
current war against terrorism is the creation of a new myth of
nationhood. America is casting itself simultaneously as the
world's saviour and the world's victim; a sacrificial messiah, on a
mission to deliver the world from evil. This myth contains
incalculable dangers for everyone else on earth.

To discharge its sense of unique grievance, the US
government has hinted at what may become an
asymmetric world war. It is no coincidence that
Somalia comes close to the top of the list of  nations
it may be prepared to attack. This war, if it materialises,
will be led not by the generals in their bunkers, but by
the people who construct the story the nation chooses
 to believe.

[09/17/2001 6:13:49 PM] ?Among the many extraordinary efforts put forth by the media on the morning of September
11, 2001, The Record responded with its outstanding photos, a Tuesday Extra afternoon edition, expanded editorial
coverage in regular editions, &  the immediate establishment of a local disaster relief fund. These efforts have come
to be symbolized by a photo of three firefighters raising the American flag amidst the rubble of the World Trade Center,
taken by Thomas E. Franklin, a photographer at The Record. The photo originally ran in The Record on Wednesday,
September12.  It immediately drew national attention and re-ran on Thursday,September 13 with an explanation from
Franklin of how he captured the extraordinary shot...

[This photo is not and was not extraordinary.Bravery Corrage or True to want it to be is to be so far back in the past . ED]

Depicted in the photo are Brooklyn-based firefighters Dan McWilliams of Long Island and George Johnson o fnow
Rockaway Beach, both from Ladder 157, and Billy Eisengrein of Staten Island from Rescue 2. This photo has been
 seen around  the world.

It has been used on the front pages of newspapers including the New York Post,Baltimore Sun, and Providence Journal
(Rhode Island), and hasbeen shown on network television. Neither the photographer nor the firefighters knew initially
that their combined instincts would grow into a nationa l symbol of patriotism.

Ira was a dedicated Marine. Quiet and steady, he was admired by his fellow Marines who fought alongside him in three Pacific battles.
When Ira learned that President Roosevelt wanted him and the other survivors to come back to the US to raise money on the 7th Bond Tour, he was horrified. To Ira, the heroes of Iwo Jima, those deserving honor, were

At the White House, President Truman told Ira, "You are

As he later lamented, "How could I feel like a hero when

School Shootings and White Denial
By Tim Wise, AlterNet
March 6, 2001

I can think of no other way to say this, so here goes: white people need to pull our heads out
of our collective ass.
Two more white children are dead and thirteen are injured, and another "nice" community
is scratching its blonde head, utterly perplexed at how a school shooting the likes of the one
yesterday in Santee, California could happen. After all, as the Mayor of the town said in an
interview with CNN: "We're a solid town, a good town, with good kids, a good church-going
town…an All-American town." Yeah, well maybe that's the problem.
I said this after Columbine and no one listened so I'll say it again: white people live in an
utter state of self-delusion. We think danger is black, brown and poor, and if we can just move far enough away from "those people" in the cities we'll be safe. If we can just find an "all-American" town, life will be better, because "things like this just don't happen here."
Well bullshit on that. In case you hadn't noticed, "here" is about the only place these kinds
 of things do happen.
Oh sure, there is plenty of violence in urban communities and schools. But mass murder; wholesale slaughter; take-a-gun-and-see-how-many-you can-kill kinda craziness seems made for those safe places: the white suburbs or rural communities.

And yet once again, we hear the FBI insist there is no "profile" of a school shooter. Come
again? White boy after white boy after white boy, with very few exceptions to that rule (and
none in the mass shooting category), decides to use their classmates for target practice,
and yet there is no profile? Imagine if all these killers had been black: would we still hesitate
to put a racial face on the perpetrators? Doubtful.

Indeed, if any black child in America – especially in the mostly white suburbs of
Littleton, or Santee – were to openly discuss their plans to murder fellow students, as
happened both at Columbine and now Santana High, you can bet your ass that somebody
would have turned them in, and the cops would have beat a path to their doorstep.

But when whites discuss their murderous intentions, our stereotypes of what
danger looks like cause us to ignore it – they're just "talking" and won't really do
anything. How many kids have to die before we rethink that nonsense? How many
dazed and  parents, Mayors and Sheriffs do we have to listen to, describing how
confused "normal" and safe their community is, and how they just can't understand
 what went wrong?

I'll tell you what went wrong and it's not TV, rap
music, video games or a lack of prayer in school.

What went wrong is that white Americans decided to ignore dysfunction
and violence when it only affected other communities, and thereby
blinded themselves to the inevitable creeping of chaos which never
remains isolated too long. What affects the urban "ghetto" today will be
coming to a Wal-Mart near you tomorrow, and unless you address the
emptiness, pain, isolation and lack of hope felt by children of color and
the poor, then don't be shocked when the support systems aren't
there for your kids either.

What went wrong is that we allowed ourselves to be lulled into a false
sense of security by media representations of crime and violence that
portray both as the province of those who are anything but white like us.
We ignore the warning signs, because in our minds the warning signs
don't live in our neighborhood, but across town, in that place where we
lock our car doors on the rare occasion we have to drive there. That
false sense of security – the result of racist and classist  stereotypes –
then gets people killed. And still we act amazed.

But listen up my fellow white Americans: your children are no better, no nicer, no more moral, no more decent than anyone else.

Dysfunction is all around you, whether you choose to recognize it or not.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, and Department of Health and
Human Services, it is YOUR children, and not those of the urban ghetto,
who are most likely to use drugs.

That's right: white high school students are seven times more likely
than blacks to have used cocaine; eight times more likely to have smoked
crack; ten times more likely to have used LSD and seven times more likely
to have used heroin. In fact, there are more white high school students who
have used crystal methamphetamine (the most addictive drug on the streets
than there are black students who smoke cigarettes.

What's more, white youth ages 12-17 are more likely to sell drugs: 34% more likely,
in fact than their black counterparts. And it is white youth who are twice as likely to
binge drink, and nearly twice as likely as blacks to drive drunk.

And white males are twice as likely to bring a weapon to school as
are black males.

And yet I would bet a valued body part that there aren't 100 white people in Santee,
California, or most any other "nice" community who have ever heard a single one
 of the statistics above.

Even though they were collected by government agencies using these folks' tax money for the purpose.

Because the media doesn't report on white dysfunction .

A few years ago, U.S. News ran a story entitled: "A Shocking look
 at blacks and crime."

Yet never have they or any other news outlet discussed the "shocking" whiteness of these shoot-em-ups.

Indeed, every time media commentators discuss the similarities
in these crimes they mention that the shooters were boys, they were loners, they got picked on, but never do they seem to notice
a certain highly visible melanin deficiency. Color-blind, I guess.

White-blind is more like it, as I figure these folks would spot color mighty damn quick were some of it to stroll into their community. Santee's whiteness is so taken for granted by its residents that the Mayor, in that CNN interview, thought nothing of saying on the one hand
that the town was 82 percent white, but on
the other hand that "this is America."
Well that isn't America, and it especially isn't California, where whites
are only half of the population.

This is a town that is removed from America, and yet its Mayor thinks they are the normal ones – so much so that when asked about racial diversity, he replied that there weren't
many of different "ethni-tis-tities." Not a word. Not even close.

I'd like to think that after this one, people would wake up. Take note. Rethink their
stereotypes of who the dangerous ones are. But deep down, I know better. The
folks hitting the snooze button on this none-too-subtle alarm are my own people,
after all, and I know their blindness like the back of my hand.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia,
nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood.
But, after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy and it  is always a simple matter to drag  the people along, whether
it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a
communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always
be  brought to the bidding of the leaders.
This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked
and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing
the country to danger. It works  every time."

DEBKAfile Special Counter-Terror Report January 14, 2003, 4:33 PM (GMT+02:00)
Arafat’s New Terror Weapon: Exploding Toy Planes
DEBKAfile Special Counter-Terror Report
January 14, 2003, 4:33 PM (GMT+02:00)

Tuesday, January 14, the Palestinian Authority’s Al Ayyam daily published a message, approved by Yasser Arafat in the name of all the Palestinian groups, calling off attacks on Israeli citizens. This message, formulated by the Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, also endorses the continuing Palestinian struggle for a state whose capital is Jerusalem.
Gen. Suleiman was to submit this text to the London Middle East conference opened by British foreign secretary Jack Straw Tuesday night, January 14, in the presence of representatives from the Middle East Quartet, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
The Palestinians are there via a videolink after Israeli banned Palestinian travel in the
Arafat`s new terror toy - designed for Israeli cities - Jerusalem first

wake of the massacre by Palestinian terrorists on January 5 of 23 people in Tel Aviv.
Israel was not invited by British PM Tony Blair.
The formal theme of the conference is Palestinian reforms. Since they are a dead letter,
the Suleiman presentation turned up in time to give the forum some substance, although
the Palestinian Authority daily Al Ayyam describes it as only conveying the sense of the agreed document – not its full content. After approving the Egyptian document, the
delegates can go home satisfied that Yasser Arafat was persuaded to declare a ceasefire.

The Egyptians will also feel good, because they had a text to put before an international
forum after shepherding Fatah, Hamas and Jihad Islami leaders through months of
sporadic palaver in Cairo towards acceptance of a ceasefire. It does not matter that two
participants in the Cairo dialogue are listed by the US government as dangerous terrorists:
Abul Abbas, Head of the Arab Liberation Front, which together with the Fatah’s al Aqsa
Martyrs’ Brigades wing, is preparing mega-terror attacks in Israel and the Middle East,
and Khaled Mashal, who rules the Hamas from its Damascus headquarters and works closely with al Qaeda operatives in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
Abbas, safely returned to Baghdad, admitted Monday, January 13, that he had been in
Cairo.
He made himself scarce when he heard of a US approach to Egypt that could lead
to his extradition for murdering an American citizen, Leon Klinghoffer, while hijacking
the Achille Lauro on behalf of Fatah 17 years ago.

The Palestinian paper admits that the full text of the Suleiman document is being kept
dark for fear it will break up the inter-Palestinian dialogue. Arafat is said to have approved,
but not adopted it. None of the groups are even mentioned. Arafat’s ceasefire is therefore
admittedly a smoke and mirrors exercise. All the groups - and Arafat in person - are
described by DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources as being fully absorbed in pressing
business of a completely different nature. The Palestinian leader’s daily routine, as
revealed by our intelligence data, is particularly revealing.

He is fully occupied in arranging the funding and deployment of new weapons,
tricks, ruses and devices for the coming cycle of terrorist operations, that bank
heavily on the effectiveness of… a toy: Model planes packed with explosives
and operated by remote control .

Last month, Palestinian toy importers in Jerusalem and Ramallah were told to order
hundreds of these toys for distribution to Palestinian children in hospitals. Subsidies from
European Union member-governments could legitimately be allocated to this humanitarian
purpose.

The model airplanes were purchased in Europe and shipped quite openly to the
Palestinian shopkeepers.
According to our sources, not a single toy reached an injured Palestinian child. The model
planes were sent to Palestinian workshops for conversion into miniature air bombers with explosive payloads. Tanzim militiamen from Arafat’s Fatah, sent out to open areas near Jericho to test the new weapons, discovered they could fly to a distance of 1 kilometer and
an altitude of 300 meters. The only problem was how to guide the plane to target inside an
Israeli built-up area when it was no longer visible to the remote control holder. A small adjustment was made in the engine enabling him to cut it out from a distance, so that it dropped to the ground and blew up.

Contrary to reports that Arafat has withdrawn from
the day-to-day management of Palestinian terrorist operations, DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources emphasize that the results of the model plane conversion tests were brought before him. Delighted
with its performance, he ordered the new weapon to
be used in the coming days in Jerusalem.

He chose Jerusalem, calculating that it would be some time before Israeli security and
intelligence authorities caught on to and learned how to intercept the new mini-weapon whizzing around the city before it blew up. The deadly toy is easily launched from Arab
Jerusalem. Its flying time is estimated at no more than 2-3 minutes.
The Palestinian terror master sought new devices because of the difficulties hampering the
penetration of Israeli cities by his operatives in view of stepped up Israeli security, travel
restrictions and Israeli intelligence agents planted in their ranks. Suicide bombers are
deterred to a certain extent by the knowledge that their family homes will be demolished.
In addition to the mini-bombers, the Palestinians are trying out a whole arsenal of devices. They range from home-made rockets with a range of 15-20km and multiple rocket launchers - to exploding cigarettes and the kidnapping of former senior military officers, who as civilians are not guarded, in order to ransom Palestinian captives. Palestinian gunners will be trained to fire heavy machine guns from moving vehicles against low-flying airplanes or helicopters coming in to land.
All these projects have met with Arafat’s approval. They were authorized separately from
the mega-terror campaign promised by the Lebanese Hizballah and al Qaeda.

The hidden agenda of the Palestinian groups reported at the London conference to have
accepted a ceasefire is briefly outlined hereunder by DEBKAfile’s sources:

Fatah is divided into three camps:

1. The leader, Arafat , wants his campaign of violence to continue apace on both sides of
the Green Line with the help of financial contributions from Iraq and Iran. As controller of revenues, Arafat calls the shots for all parts of his organization, including its suicide wing,
 the al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades.

2. West Bank Fatah under Hussein al Sheikh would like to halt terrorist attacks inside
Israel, confining them to civilian and military targets on the West Bank.

3. The al Aqsa Brigades ,commanded by Tawfiq Tirawi, is pressing for strikes to continue
at full blast against Israelis everywhere, as well as Palestinian all-out support for Iraq against
US attack.

Hamas similarly opposes any restrictions on the terror campaign against Israelis.

Jihad Islami, Popular Front, Arab Liberation Front, Front of Arab Struggle are all
gearing up for a mega-terror attack against Israel.

These are the organizations that will receive pats on the back from the participants at the London “peace” conference.

BERLIN Germany's role as Israel's most steadfast European ally,
a foreign policy doctrine that was enshrined and sustained by the
legacy of the Holocaust,is beginning to crack with the country quietly
suspending weapons sales to Israel and leading politicians, led by
conservatives, employing strikingly harsh language to criticize Israeli
military action in the West Bank policy adviser to Prime Ministe Ariel
Sharon of Israel, that were described as "cool."

"In a widely publicized letter to Israel's ambassador to Germany, Norbert Bluem, a former labor minister under Chancellor Helmut Kohl, described the Israeli offensive
as a "war of annihilation" - the very term employed by
Adolf Hitler to describe the 1941 invasion of the Soviet
Union."
