Living off the grid

Mine-sniffing rats
Mine-sniffing rats are the sole focus of Apopo, a Flemish
acronym for "product development geared toward the demining
of antipersonnel mines." The group is the brainchild of Mr.
Weetjens' brother Bart; a college friend, Christophe Cox;
and a University of Antwerp professor, Mic Billet, now Apopo's
chairman.
The three decided in the late 1990's that so-called biosenso
animals with great noses were the future of land-mine
detection, but that there must be creatures better suited for
the task than dogs.
With a grant from the Belgian government, they began hunting
for an animal with a dog's sense of smell, but none of its
drawbacks. They approached Ron Verhagen, the head of the
university's biology department, for help. "And that," Mr.
Weetjens said, "is where rats came along."
Specifically, along came Cricetomys gambianus, also known
as the Gambian and African giant pouched rat. Up to 30
inches long, it thrives in most of sub-Saharan Africa, lives
up to eight years in captivity and is "savage" in the wild,
Mr. Weetjens says, but so docile when bred that some people
keep them as pets.
Each rat gets to sweep a 10-by-10-meter square of land on
which two defused mines or TNT scents have been hidden.
Finding the mine or scent earns a click and a bite of banana
or peanuts. Failure generally earns a second try. Some rats
try to game the system, scratching the earth randomly in hopes
of getting free treats. But the trainers feed them and sound
a click to signal success only when they scratch the right spots.

Mencken and Me: Indiscreet charms of the bourgeoisie
"Scorn is expensive. Perhaps it takes at least two generations of successful businessmen to create a great cynic like Henry Mencken. Though I may be more of a democrat, with a small "d," than Mencken, I think his contempt for democracy was entirely justified. Democracy honors the wisdom of the herd, and the herd has never proven itself worthy of that honor, never to the slightest degree. But to the Rev. Billy C. Wirtzes of the world, it's democracy, not property, that separates them from the serfs in Gogol's "Dead Souls" who are reduced to advocating their own floggings for the greater good of Russia—a level of "slave morality" even lower than those Mencken castigated.
It's a class thing, like so many of the most significant distinctions in this country where we refuse to talk about class. It takes a certain kind of family to incubate a critic, a columnist, a cynic, an iconoclast—someone with the serene self-confidence to assert in public that he is right and the herd, however vast or menacing, is not only wrong but ridiculous. I know what kind of family it takes because I grew up in one, and so, I submit, did Mencken. His grandfather, Burkhardt Mencken, he remembered as "generally confident and even somewhat cocky" and biographer Fred Hobson adds that Burkhardt showed "an independent spirit from the beginning, as well as a certain defiance of civil authority."

Former German Defense Minister Confirms CIA
Involvement in 9/11: Andreas Von Buelow
The Home Run System Remote Control of Passenger Aircraft
According to British aeronautical engineer Joe Vialls, the flight control computers of
all 757s and 767s have a feature than enables them to be remotely controlled, for the
purpose of aborting hijackings. This was also suggested by a former German secretary
of defense, Von Buelow. The technology required for such systems has existed for
decades. If such systems were operative on 9-11, they should have been used to take
control of and land the hijacked jets.
Former German Minister Von Buelow Already Knew About Remote Control
In his interview with the German daily "Tagesspiegel" on January 13th,
former German Secretary of Defence Andreas Von Buelow made the
following statemen.

Explosive demolition? A response to Bazant and Zhou.
911-strike.com
By Jerry Russell
An article "Why Did the World Trade Center Collapse?—Simple Analysis" by Zdenek P. Bazant and Yong Zhou appeared in the on-line
version of Journal of Engineering Mechanics ASCE, with the first version dated 9/13/01 and revisions dated 9/22/01 and 9/28/01.
With such rapid publication after 9/11, it is evident that the paper must have been rushed, with no time for full peer review. Let's take
a critical look at this paper. The basic theory of Bazant & Zhou is explained as follows, and sketched in their Fig. 1:

"Bulky, expensive crystalline silicon cells will soon be obsolete"
©2004 Jerry Russell 3/12/04
"Solar and Wind Energy are Viabl Alternatives
Giant wind turbines have already made a massive contribution to Europe's energy
independence. Wind energy costs can be as low as three cents a kilowatt hour --
that's a bit cheaper than natural gas, oil or nuclear power plants.
Huge strides are being made in solar photovoltaic research. Bulky, expensive
crystalline silicon cells will soon be obsolete.
The future belongs to artificial photosynthesis technology, based in thin-film
plastics and built with nanotechnology. This is not science fiction, it is a Venture Capital Reality.
pursuing this technology, and in Silicon Valley, the founders of Google are
major funding partners of Nanosolar. When these new solar panels are
available on the market, solar power will be cheaper than coal.
Electricity on the grid can't be used to power automobiles directly, but it can be
used to make hydrogen, and hydrogen can easily be stored as lithium hydride,
and burned directly in internal-combustion engines.
Critics of the hydrogen technology complain about expensive cryogenic storage, and unreliable fuel-cell technology --
but they don't tell you about these simple alternatives that work.
Unless this technology can be suppressed by the entrenched elitist oil interests
of Skull & Bones and the CIA, the "Fossil Fuel" industry will soon live up to its
name -- it will be extinct.
The War in Iraq is not about preserving the American Way of Life in an age of
scarcity, and the crimes of September 11 (if indeed it was an "inside job") will
not in any way contribute to maintaining a high standard of living for the American
people. Americans are not silent benefactors or partners in the theft of Iraqi oil.
The only beneficiaries are the likes of Halliburton, Dynergy, Carlysle Group and
the family fortunes of the Bushes, Cheneys and Bin Ladens.
